  • It's funny how all these people talk about music when they don't know anything about music. What do they know about salsa. Do they know any salsa music from Latinoamerica : Cuba ,Colombia,Peru, Ecuador, Panama, etc etc.

They don't even Know 5% of that music.

  • Interesting so many young people are being interviewed - I thought they were supposed to have "lost the rhythm" lol.

This imho is simply a case of "the good ol' days" - whining about new dancers. I'm pretty certain back in the Palladium era the majority of dancers simply went out to have fun and didn't have the depth of dance ability that the masters of the time had, JUST like today. Stop whining and accept that the music changes, the dance changes but not necessarily for the worse.

  • Nothings changed - you have the same ratio today of good musical dancers that you had back then. Don't believe me? I can name names - Oliver Pineda, Milton Cobo, James Cobo, Victor & Burju, Magna Gopal, Shaka Brown, Leon Rose, the list goes on. When I go social dancing I see plenty of good, musical dancers. If anything the dancing has become more technical, but technicality is not a bad thing, it frees dancers to express themselves better because they have the know-how.

  • Arsenio did create son-montuno well as being the originator of whats now called mambo though he never called it that.

As far as guaguanco, how could he invent a style of music that was played before he was even born.... guaguanco is rumba and probably can be directly traced back to Africa.

He did however introduce guaguanco rhythms into son which is why salsa today is essentially son-guaguanco

  • @latstar

theres no guaguanco in africa unless it was taken there from cuba, because it is music that developed in cuba...I think in santiago although i might be mistaken. however yo are correct, arsenio did not invent guaguanco but he did introduce it into son.

  • 6:25 - I disagree. Guaguanco is a type of Cuban rumba that had existed way before Arsenio Rodriguez came along. And Mambo was created by Cachao Lopez. So why does this video claim Arsenio Rodriguez is the originator of both?? This is factually wrong.

  • @suavemente74 you may want to actually watch the movie before blurting out such a comment. Cachao didn't create the Mambo, he expanded it according to Cachao himself documented in La Epoca. If Cachao himself, according to the movie, says that Arsenio created the Mambo then why would you continue to insist that it was instead Cachao? Ez: b/c you didn't watch the movie. Cachao says pretty clearly that Arsenio was the investor of the mambo, and that all Cachao did was expand what Arsenio did.

  • @mambero78 also what you wrote the guaguanco .. yeah figures you'd say something like that because you haven't watch either movie the first or second. Rumba existed before Arsenio of course. But Arsenio created the syllabus for Guaguanco according to Arsenio's friends, musicians, and family members. Watch the movies, first, then state your opinion.

  • @mambero78 Friend, this movie is not available in my part of the world. Anyway, I'm referring to THIS VIDEO CLIP, not the movie. I saw the video clip above, which is why I'm asking why the video clip makes such conclusions. To be honest, I've never read about Cachao saying Arsenio Rodriguez invented the mambo. This is news to me. AFAIK ever since his danzon piece called MAMBO came out, that word has been attributed to him and Perez Prado (as the inventor of the dance).

  • @suavemente74 .. actually if you visit their website . you will be able to see if they can ship you a copy. I know they ship all over the world. In the movie they hold up a record of Arsenio with Cachao's interview on the back saying that Arsenio originated the mambo. It's in the movie. The producers were friends with Cachao, their father and Cachao were subs for each other. I think you may want to see the movie. There's so much you're missing. They talk about Perez Prado too and his role.

  • @mambero78 On the second part, I think I'm right to say it is not correct to state Arsenio Rodriguez as the ORIGINATOR of guaguanco. He may have contributed to its development and adaptation but to say our good friend had actually invented the thing in the first place would be stretching it a tad too far.

Thanks for the replies though. Learned something today. ;) Cheers.

  • @suavemente74 .. you're welcome. I visited them couple of weeks ago and screened some of their part II movie and they have a record of Arsenio where it talks about he invented the rhythms guaguanco, son-montuno and mambo by creating the syllabus for each rhythm. Some of the patterns on the instrument exists long before Arsenio but he's the one who consolidated them into one rhythm and titled them and had the syllabus written. Good information. Great movies. Glad we can debate it, friend.

  • This is a great video and much needed for the salsa dance community throughout the world :)

  • ha! arelis is mad funny!

  • Thank you so much for doing and / or uploading and showing this video. As a professional musician who also enjoys dancing... THANK YOU! ... I hope every dancer (professional or not) watches this.

  • We also see Salsa instructors using Ballet as a foundation to train beginner Salsa students. It's a disgrace.

  • I think Victor hit it right on the head when people don't maintain the basic foundations of the dance it then becomes something else...like today we see Ballet, Jazz, etc pasted on top of Mambo. The dance begins to look more and more bland and watered down. Basically today's Salsa dancers are flattening the dance.

  • Great video. Thank you.

  • what is the name of that arsenio rodriguez song?

  • what is the name of that arsenio rodriguez song?
