I've always wondered why music from Medieval Europe sounds so haunting, quite different from the folk songs I'm more familiar with which I suppose are normally from the last few hundred years.
I'm not one of the Scandinavian folk, but I love the music and the agricultural history of the people I like very much and I feel bound to the national.Very beautiful country
@SuperLonnieray lol LOL!!1 the Vikings were not a people, to be a Viking was an activity, something you did. A viking were one, from scandinavia, who engaged in tribal seabased warfare and pillaging.
Really amazing, i love the norwegian language in folk music.
Just one thing, i know several norwegian folk instruments like seljefloyte, bukkehorn, langeleik, munnharp and few others but as far as i remember norway never had its own bagpipe.
@Myrnir Norway did have a own bagpipe, but it died out of use here. It survived in sweden thanks to 1 man.
In sweden they usually call it for svensk säckpipe(swedish bagpipe), but another name used, and also a more correct one, is nordisk sekkepipe(nordic bagpipe), as the bagpipe was not only used in Sweden.
@Myrnir This is a medieval Hurdy Gurdy, it is a string instrument, it is not a bagpipe. It consists of a box, with keys, and a rotating wheel, which acts as a bow which strums continuously a string, to get that 'droning' bagpipe sound. But, it does sound very much like a medieval bagpipe.
Noe av det beste jeg har hørt! norsk folkemusikk fra vikingtiden og middelalderen var mye mye bedre enn den er i dag. Lurer på om det var på grunn av danskenes og svenskenes påvirkning.
@ollecarlsson it is middle age music itand wath do you call folk mutch of the music called folk comes from middle ages since nothing was written down form befor the middle ages older music wouldnt we known to us and after that is still to modern to be real folk music in my eyes
Ancient Bear Cult has a song that sounds like this... I think its called Heming The Great: Heming and the King/Heming and the Wicth of the Mountain... Maybe this is prettyer ;)
@pschloss62 I found an English translation online. The refrain means "Young Heming was a good skier." Yes, really. I know, that sounds very unlikely, but that's the translation. three w's dot qiyanskrets dot se slash lyrics dot htm

@SuperLonnieray Actually this is pretty much as authentic "Viking/Norse" music as it gets, you clearly have no idea what you're talking about.

@Vikingskog He said: "good mjusic voicis nice, mjusic smooth" in bad Finnish, spelling problems are intended to somewhat deliver the typo nuances.

@Myrnir However, there may be a bagpipe accompanying it, I do not know. But I do believe, what is being played is a medieval Hurdy Gurdy.
