  • Bobby Goldsburo hairdo!!!hAAAAAAAAAAAAA

  • Great song Johnny still performs and still sounds pretty good!

  • I would go back too! He has a very feeling voice with intensity. Elusivebutterfly1928 wrote this...

  • i was in brazil 67 and this song was a great hit, i was going out with the singer of som beat at the time, and i absolutely adored the poor side of town, so here's to you jose, think about you often, even after all these years.

  • sad to think that the rock&roll hall of fame would overlook this man and his music

  • nothing more soulful than the songs from our generation? great singers, songwriters, performers...just the greatest thing this boy had ever found !

  • Noreen and I were sixteen. We both lost our virginity while listening to this beatiful tune in her room. We laid side by side, wallowed in the bliss of our mutual desire for one-another.

True love, as I have never felt!

  • First time I heard this song was in country, Vietnam, over A-Farts. (AFRTS - Armed Forces Radio and Television Service) and never stopped loving this song. I was a naive 18 year old,

scared to schidt, and like that. Times have changed.

  • this is one of my favorite 60's songs i can remember listening to this over and over again what ever happened to him

  • I wouldn't call him underrated. He was and is still considered a major talent.

  • Love it! background sound is awsome= good old times memories.

  • I was 17 years old the Viet Nam war was going on and protests in the streets!

  • THANK'S FORTHE MEMORYS I LOVE THIS SONG FOREVER

  • Great video thanks. Johnny not only sang it he wrote it. His only #1 hit and it came from a song he wrote.

  • When this song came out I lived on the poor side of town and tried to date a girl from the other side of town...it didn't work.. this song is a time machine... 1966

  • A great song and great singer.

  • Love you Xixi.

  • The only type of music that is clear and sounds great!

  • I clearly remember as a youth in 1965 walking down the Sunset Strip on a trip to see my aunt. When I passed the Whiskey a go go Johnny Rivers was inside putting tracks down on a record that would be heard around the world. He produced the Fifth Dimension, one of the best ensembles of the day. He was a favorite cover artist. He even was part of the Brill Building scene. When he tours the audience spends the night out of their seats.

  • Thumbs up if you're listening to this 2020 and beyond :)

  • I always loved his voice and his intensity. Thanks for taking me back to simpler times.

  • He was underrated. He did a great job doing Smokey Robinson's song.johnny Rivers is bad. Period. Thanks

  • he wasn't underrated he only had one hit that he actually wrote and i believe it's this one

  • Fort Jackson SC. Basic traing. Still good memories!

  • A FLOOD of childhood memories come flowing in when I hear this song. Thank you Johnny, and ekseak37 for posting it. I used to ride my bicycle, with a transister radio on the handlebar, listening to the hits.

  • Holds Special Memories for me,,,and the Girls Harmonizing is Superb !!

  • When I was a kid I thought Johnny Rivers was black. He was so cool and all I knew / had was the radio. Hes still one of my big favorites and one of the real cats. xx Thanks for posting ♥ "Jenny"

  • @NoRosesForMe

hA HA I came from far away country I thought Lou Christy and Tom Jones was black to.

Cause we never see the artist only listen to the radio. But that is more than forty years ago.

  • Great song, great performer. Rivers had a great sound, no question. Man, empty stage, no background/dancers, no chair, props or even a mic to hold ...tough gig! But he made it look easy, 'cause like so many performers back then, he had IT ...real talent! Thanks for posting!

  • JESUS CHRIST is still being crucified by the catholic church and the united states government

  • @123ETERNALDEATH , You're stupid, that's a fact! Go study, boy-girl-fake!

  • esse sim é um cantor...................ñ é essa porcaria de sertanejo universsitario...q veio para estragar nossa musica sertaneja tão linda.............q pena da vontade de chorar escutando esse cantor............PARABENS "JHONY"

  • Im 35 yrs and this music is the best . wish could of be born back then. music now is not gooddd. but oh well. but this music will stay forever and ever :)

  • So many memories of growing up in Phoenix, AZ. Thank you for all the memories.

  • Johnny Ramistella.... One of my favorite old songs. Always gets me pensative.

  • doop do do waaa shoo bee do bee OH how I loved Johnny Rivers My brother got a stereo and albums for Christmas 1965 and this was one of them I was 11 and loved Johnny right then and there My brother would let me sit beside him an his bed and listen if I sat still ! I DID SIT STILL TOO !

  • reminds me of a young lady who I adored and left me for no reason. I left to Vietnam and came back to a woman lonely and abandoned. I never went back with her.

  • Johnny, I got in the biggest brawl you could have imagined but my friends and the Ghost of Jim Morrison got us just like the "New England Patriots and Tom Brady"....Dan O'Niallain, Grafton, Ma.

  • I would like to hear Beiber try to sing this...

  • one of the best

  • The genius of youtube is the way it allows our history to be told in these short stories.

  • Masterpiece. And thank you Falcon for your service. You are indeed appeciated.

  • Johnny is one of the most underrated performers. Love all of his music.

  • The '60s was a lifetime ago. Everything has changed and I'm sad to say - not for the better. I would go back to the "good old days" in a heartbeat!

  • @RandyBful1 This should be Obama's theme song ("Welcome to) The Poor SIde of Town"

  • @RandyBful1 funny, some would say they would go back to the 50's, the 40s. I've learned most want to go back when they were young. Going back is not always so good, onward and forward. Wars, murders, rape were all still happening back in the 60s. Did you forget the vietnam war? Lynchings?

Now, if you are just talking about the music, than yes, going back is good.

  • @RandyBful1 LOL ... yeah

  • @RandyBful1 you and me both for sure those were good times.

  • @RandyBful1 If they ever invent a time machine I will meet you there brother.

  • Right on right on God B-less!

  • so i wrote this for my g/f who left me for the pre-med student - then she came back, ya know, and I gave her a quick roll in the hay and laughed and said, now you can go back to the doctor . . . and then i married her sister!!! god, revenge is sweet . . .

  • Great Song! I was 6 was this came out....

  • Wow...this song takes me back when our band used to perform this Johnny Rivers gem...thsx ekseaks37 for some great memories...^/^

  • @BigAndTall666 you can t even spell u stupid motherfucker stay in your own country dickweed

  • @ironrick46 Thorazine..works wonders for dementia... You were not one of us that served back then so save your idiotic and totally inane comments for your comic book club members.,!

  • @lucripet wrong motherfucker 68 69

  • It was one of amazing song in 60's.

I heard this song first time mid of 90's. However it shines still. Never old fashoned.

This video from NHK (Japanese TV staion) programme, I'm so glad they showed Johnny Rivers great song like this in Japanese, I'm as a Japanese.

  • Johnny really should have a guitar in his hands. You can tell that, he is not comfortable without it.

  • And i thought a black guy sang that

  • Comment removed

  • Johnnie, Your Voice haunts people like Jim Morrison and that's the funny part of your haunting voice. Today, They don't make singers or harmonization like you any more and they never will with "assinine digital technology" where the singer has no talent and can't harmonize like the Beatles or the Mamas and Papas, the Byrds or You...Dan Kneeland, Grafton, Ma.

  • Great song from a truly underrated talent.

  • i love this song i plan on singing this beautiful song at my next karoake...oh yes he has an amazing voice..i can't get this song out of my head

  • Nossa! Como ele está lindo nesse clipe... Que música!

  • @ringo244 how come he is not in the rock hall of fame?

  • I always wondered about the girl singing in the background.

  • Great tune!

  • This was the last song I listened to before I got of the car on the way to leaving in the Air Force. Still one of the best songs ever.

  • American classic. All singers take notes.

  • best song ever

  • Top notch backing vocals by The Blossoms! To me, the backing vocals are the best part of the song.

  • @GtForLife123 yeah but johnny rivers never wore a suit of t-bone and filet mignon on stage like Lady G!!

  • @blueinfinite True, but in my opinion, that's fucked up. O_o

  • @tyeson85

    U got that right!

  • Classic singing and songwriting. Thanks Johnny!

  • just heard this on the radio down here in SW Florida -- ahh - the memories. Mr Rivers, you play a part in alot of our teenage years! Thankyou

  • What a feeling! were the sixties, ma¨am

    Just great!

Thanks for upload ekseak37, my friend

  • I've loved this song since I first heard it when i was a kid.

  • Have always really liked this song and I never get tired of hearing it! Johnny Rivers was very underrated in my opinion. A Classic song!

  • johnny has a nice distinctive voice, did not sound like other singers as it seems like many artist today are impersonating others as in american idol....these non talented singers of today, rock on johnny ...you are one of a kind

  • I'm getting choked-up watching this Johnny Rivers video, bringing back the old memories and nastalgia! He and Glen Campbell had a way of getting to me, they both touched the same place in my soul.

  • I saw Jounny in concert 4.2.11... He sang just as great now as he ever did...

  • @shale513 where did you see him at?

  • @hotmn4u

He played at the Proctors Theatre in Schenectady, NY... The other performers that night were, Gary Puckett, The Association and a guy singing a lot of old Gene Pitney hits. Can't remember his name. Sort of an unknown, but he sounded remarkably like Gene. It was an excellent show....

  • @shale513 sounds like you had a great time, unforunately I live out here in s. cal.

  • @hotmn4u It's funny you mentioned you live in Ca. Cuz Johnny paused after one of his numbers, to tune his guitar with his band, and said, "I apologize folks, our California guitars aren't use to your Schenectady weather." The audience cracked up. So I'm sure he'll be performing on his (your) home turf too...

  • Original he is and great songs indeed. ;)

  • It sounds like a follow-up continuation of "Down in the Boondocks."

  • This boy had more soul than God shoulda' ever allowed a white man to have.

One of the best 1960's recordings that lives on as an example of True

    Blue-eyed soul.

  • Howard Wolowitz (The big bang theory)!!! =DD

  • Okay, now...what is not to like? There always has to be someone...!

  • this video is the shooby-doobiest

  • the chinese can't copy this!!!!

  • NOT MADE IN CHINA......Pure American!

  • Rivers,Pre=Hirsute look, circa 1966..Rivers has told that Liberty's Prez Al Bennett, warned him not to record this, that it was "Too Risky" and to "Stay with the Funky Trio Sound." Rivers went ahead and recorded this,anyways..His first (of Only Two) #1! So much for that Advice!

  • Hey, y'all! This is a Love song, Makeout Music! How many of you from the sixties remember parking in the 'boonies' and smooching to this and other Johnny Rivers classics? He was/is the best!

  • Beautiful song beautifully sung.

  • Dnload the audio from this song at thetunify doht cohm.

  • More Vietnam music memories for this old jarhead...and that Irish girl who did me in...this is 2011 and she's still in my mind from 1968!!! DAMN!!

  • @BushMass

Irish women have a habit of doing that..Knew lots of Vietnam Vets who really dug Johnny Rivers..alot..glad you made it back home guy..

  • POOR SIDE OF TOWN WOW!!!!!! SURE BRING BACK MEMORIES...FROM THE 60'S WISH I WAS STILL BACK IN THEM DAY'S.......

  • OK really Johnny wrote this.. Yeah I thought he was good but a cover guy but this is a beautiful song .. He really wrote this? Great touch to lyrics.

  • KEEP ROCKIN' JOHNNY !!!!!

    LUIZ (BRAZIL)

  • I have a lot more respect and admiration for 60's songs, especially when we live in the days or Wrap.

  • The only order a soldier is allowed to disobey is an illegal and immoral one. Not liking the politics of the Vietnam conflic was too bad. He should of gone.

  • I remember this song in the 60's .. My dad had orders for his 3rd war and with 28 years in the military he said "NO" .. he didn't like VietNam's politics .. my oldest brother was already over there and served 4 tours in Nam ... we moved to the poor side of town to survive on Dad's small retirement ... I joined the Army and eventually went into the Speical Forces .. I don't live on the poor side of town anymore .. but I still live a meagar life .. nothing to fancy ... Merry Christmas to All

  • @HGRPhotography1

great story, and glad you are well.

  • The backing vocals make this whole song come together. I think The Blossoms sing backup on this one.

  • Johnny Rivers, the king of live Whisky A Go Go performances

  • Johnny Rivers invented the "go go" fake live sound. He re-invented Chuck Berry back in 64 when Chuck was chased down by the man. Johnny Rivers wrote great pop songs played them and had the hits, he founded his own label with Lou Adler and signed the 5th Dimension. He then moved on as the public tastes changed and kept gigging all over the world keeping his audiences charmed and his health in check. He doesn't need the RRHOF the hall of fame needs him. I hope his says no like the Sex Pistols did.

  • man I fell in love with this fantastic song back in the 90s when overhearing it while working on the oldies station that played. I didn't grow up then, but the song is really still a powerful song even in the 90s, which would be over 30 years later. :)

  • FANTASTIC

  • Es super hermosa!

  • I think Johnnie Rivers was a "Super Star" not just a "Star"...Literally, the most under-rated acts in Pop/Rock History almost like Neil Young...Dan Nealon

  • this should have been the obamba theme song.

  • I wonder what happend to Johnny, i really miss his music. this is one of my favorite songs of all time. They just dont make music liek they did back then. I for one miss hearing the lyrics and all the instruments.

  • @liqermixr The only place to get good lyrics and musicianship anymore is metal and blue grass; forget current popular music because it has been taken over by mass produced garbage.

  • Beautiful voice ☺

  • Where's the rest of it?

  • I love the songs from the golden oldies. But if I were to hear them each and everyday,I think I would get tired of them. But I have to agree. The lyrics have a lot of depth that today's music doesn't have.

  • This is my favorite Song by Johnny Rivers! Too bad the video is cut short.

    : (

  • @MicHudsonEsquire I also prefer the other vid. for this song (from ABC-TV's 1960's "Where the Action Is") where even though Johnny is also lip-synching, he's at least lip-synching with a guitar in hand. (The dancers in the background of that vid. a bit annoying).

  • @sneezyize Is that vid. on youtube?

  • My #1 favorite from the 1960s -- which is saying a lot, because that decade was chock-full of timeless, OUTSTANDING pop tunes.

  • The 60s could it get any better?

  • Can't help it, I just fall in love with Johnny all over again after watching this video.

  • That was Darlene Love & the Blossoms singing backup. Heard an interview on XM Radio with Lou Adler, who produced most of Johnny's songs.

  • @jlgood50

I dont know why, but lots of people thinks its the 5th Demension singing backup. Yes its the Blossoms with Darlene. Johnny did introduce the 5th Demension to Jimmy Webb. The rest is history.

  • That was the first guitar lick I ever tried to play

  • Stangely enough,Al Bennett of Liberty said of this wonderful tune,"Stick to your funky little band sound..You're gonna kill your career!"....It reached #1,his first,BTW!..So much for his "Funky Little Band Sound!" He started to grow Mutton Chops and Full Beard in 1967,a year after this video. Michael Boyce

  • i use to pick up my lil daughters and dance to this song always

  • true classic

  • Legend

  • I love Johnny Rivers, always have, always will, his music makes a wonderful soundtrack...

  • This mans music is timeless, never get tired of listening to it!!!!

  • R.E.M.'s Peter Buck plays the guitar riff at the very end of "Don't Go Back to Rockville".

  • Songs like this never lose validity, beautiful theme, a true classic

  • @patroni19 Very true!! Unlike the majority of today's "Here now, Gone tomorrow" music!!

  • @patroni19 AWESOME COMMENT I AGREE
