I returned home to the USA from Haiti last week. I found Haitians welcoming and it is a beautiful country. The only resentment against Haiti's few "tourists" I could see came from white professional "do gooders" who stay at luxe hotels on expense accounts from charity groups and drive up prices. This is not to say aid workers never help, but at least tourists spend their own money. I learned alot in Haiti and will never forget the beautiful people I met.
God knows haiti needs some help and "UNITY" ,and haiti is a rich country by the way dont believe it when they say its da poorest in da caribbeans it is not true , yes i say it ...
I cannot believe you all fighting over ideas on what are to be done for the country.Instead putting your head together, you all describing yourself as who you are. For the sick of all of us stop fussing over each other for nonsense. Please put yourself together and bring excellent ideas to develop the country.
I thank what Mr Capponi is doing is really a blessing for this part of the country that has an historic past. I'm thanking this entrepreneur for his vision set for this area.
Let's forget about the million homeless people, or the dire poverty in Haiti. Instead, let's focus on turning Jacmel into tourist spot. I guess these vultures / disaster capitalists haven't gotten the memo: Haiti is not interested in becoming a neoliberal haven like her neighbors.
@nadoop ...I am pretty sure you live in the US in your cool AC...Enjoying yourself...So, shut your ignorant mouth...The CAM and Western Union tranfer will not help in the long run...Tourism is what built a country...NO TOURISM means no income for the ones that has no education and no hope of getting one...That is why the neighboring Islands shows no respect...200 yrs later of independence and NOTHING TO SHOW...Ignorant people like you keep Haiti from growing....
@odile2000 You are nothing but a dumb ass, ignorant, misinformed idiot who has no idea what you're talking about. Do you mean like in Jamaica where the tourist spots are all isolated away from the POVERTY, POLICE BRUTALITY, DRUG VIOLENCE, ECT? Do you mean like in the Dominican Republic where countless Dominicans are STILL risking their lives by boat to flee their country and settle in Puerto Rico? CON'T.
@odile2000 Do you mean like in just about every Caribbean country, where private international companies buy up private lands and leave the people in the cycle of dependency? Dear Dumb Ass....In order for a country to prosper, a country needs SELF-SUFFICIENCY. In other words, schools have to be built BY THE STATE, not international parasites. Hospitals have to be built by Haitians - NOT international parasites. Companies have to be built by Haitians...NOT INTERNATIONAL PARASITES.
@odile2000 The Caribbean is plagued with poverty and violence that is never reported by the media because rich Americans, Canadians, and Europeans will stop visiting those countries. What you want is the rest of Haiti to turn into another Labadee, where the average Haitian can't even visit, and where bulk of the money goes to international parasites, and where Haitians only receive a measly 6 bucks per tourist?
If you understand the social and economic history of Haiti, you'd know that MY country has has been DELIBERATELY kept down via coups, support for dictators, free trade, NGOs, and the fucking list goes on. The answer, you ignorant ass, is sovereignty.
@odile2000 No, it's DUMB ASS happily ignorant people like you who help keep Haiti in a state of perpetual misery. You can't possibly prove that tourism as a major economic force is good for any country. The United States has been able to sustain economically for many years BECAUSE of its sovereignty. In other words, it's infrastructure has been built by its citizens and NOT by international parasites. Do you understand that? Or my words are too advance for you?
@odile2000 Tourism won't save Haiti, EDUCATION, HOUSING, HEALTH CARE, INDEPENDENCE WILL. Tourism hasn't saved not ONE country, and it won't save Haiti. What has tourism done for MEXICO? HMM?? What has tourism done for Jamaica? HMM? NOTHING but more poverty and violence. Go get an education.
@nadoop You are a SELL OUT anyway...I am not going to wastE my electricity on you...Come and live in Haiti and then YOU could comment how to re-built ...So call education and you are no where helping your country...AT least the rest of us are down there helping...WHEN YOU GET ON A PLANE AND HELP, YOU CAN COMMENT...Education my "DERRIERE"...Your education should off let u know that Michael Capponi was talking about SUSTAINABLE TOURISM...Je me demande ci tu viens d'Haiti...
@odile2000 And you continue to expose your dumbness. You have absolutely no idea who I am or what I do, yet you make baseless accusations. Sustainable tourism MY ASS. By the way, Haiti doesn't need help. Haiti needs to be left alone so that the people of Haiti can determine their own fucking future. There are those like me who are fighting for that, and there are those like you who are so brainwashed and uneducated to the point where you believe Haiti needs 'help." Kiss my ass.
@nadoop Oh, and, umm, ask Jamaica, Antigua, Dominican Republic, and Trinidad how tourism is working for them. The fact is tourism should be the last on Haiti's agenda. Education, health care, food self-sufficiency needs to be the top priorities. Fuck you and your tourism.
@jgopg13 LOL @ help. I'm not the one enslaving Haiti via phony charities and other feel good nonsense. Haiti led a successful revolution because she wanted to be free and self-sufficient, and not remain in a state of utter dependency. Perhaps you've been conditioned to believe Haiti is not capable of helping itself, but that's certainly not the case. By the way, those million dollar luxury property developments that will go up in Jacmel won't be for the average Haitian.
looks like #3 rebar to me, so when you are [training] them Vs feeding them fish, etc - perhaps it's best to get yourself training in structural design and construction first? Just a thought...
