@TheThordir Actually, I think the "new aeon" could either mean Kain's rule or the restoration of Nosgoth due to Kain's sacrifice. I say this because originally Blood Omen, I read once was originally a stand alone game with no planned sequels. That could mean that there was no real canon ending planned and the ending was at first up to the player, whether to choose or deny the sacrifice. When you think about it, either ending could close the game with no sequel as both seem like a true finale

I find it strange that they put together 2 scenes ( Vorador eliminating the circle and the assasination of Ariel) that are 500 years apart as the intro of the 1st game in the series Oo. I don't see the need for the Vorador part....
@krazyllah The Vorador part establishes Vorador as a ridiculous badass, and establishes that he was able to defeat Malek, which comes into play later in the story... when Kain encounters Malek, he's unable to kill him and is forced to flee. You consult The Oracle (who turns out to be Moebius), who sends you to Vorador, who ultimately helps Kain by defeating Malek for good. If not for the Vorador bit in the intro, the player would never have seen him before.
I'm a little confused. If Vorador is killing the circle of the nine here (minus Nupraptor, Ariel, and Mortanius) Then who is Kain hunting down to restore the pillars?
@lavaking Kain hunting down the new generation of circle of Guardians. Vorador kill them all (6), and then the new guardians born: Dejoule, Bane, Azimuth, Ariel, Anarcrothe and Nupraptor. Actually, the survivors from the slaugter were only 3: Mortanius, Moebius and Malek. Some years after, Mortanius murdered Ariel and Kain was born. This was the generation of Guardians: Kain, Nupraptor, Malek, Mortanius, Moebius, Dejoule, Bane, Azimuth and Anarcrothe. And Kain must purge this Circle.
@dskull2000 I sent you a message with some information about Legacy of Kain. I hope you recieved the message and then you can read about the history of the Legacy of Kain series.
Ironic. Vorador kills 4 Circle members (with no resistance from them) and almost killed Malek (but spares him in so that he can live in shame) but Kain has to fight against 9 members where it sometimes takes 10 min for each person to kill them
@BxBaNgEr828 no the sarafan has the soul reaver u can see that in Soul Reaver 2 where Raziel, Moebius and Malek are talking just a few rooms away from the central room where Vorador kills the 4 Pillar Members
@BxBaNgEr828 nope silicon knights confirmed that it is not the soul reaver although it is made in a very similar style to it. I seem to remember reading somewhere that it was actually vorador who made the soul reaver.
This is one of my all times favorite games, developed by Crystal Dynamics, storyline by Silicon Knights. I never really felt the Raziel spinoff had anything to do with this game as the ending is perfect and doesn't need sequels. I wish they remade this game as a RPG (think The Witcher), or a movie. Just imagine it, a much much darker and cooler Underworld Rise of the Lycans with an epic storyline and charismatic main character. Too much storyline for a single film maybe, make it a trilogy ;)
sorry, what I ment to say was that the game was published by Crystal Dynamic and developed by Silicon Knights, unlike the sequels which were developed by Crystal Dynamics itself. LoK came out in 1996, the first sequel, Soul Reaver, in 1999
I would love to see this game remade for current gen gaming if they could do it right, maybe take into account the changes caused by raziel and kain's interference in the other games, and EXPLAIN WHY VORADOR IS STILL ALIVE IN BLOOD OMEN 2!!!! Maybe have christopher lee take the late great tony jay's place as mortanious
I actually never played this one. I played Soul Reaver 1 and 2, Blood Omen 2, and Defiance. I bet this one kicks ass. Personally I really like Soul Reaver =D
As far as I'm concerned the best LoK game released by far. Just everything about it, from the script to the voice acting to the gameplay. I always thought that all the sequels just didn't have the same magic the original had.
i got this game running perfect on win7, using a patch that turned into blood omen 2.0. but i still have a problem... the cutscenes are full of graphic artifacts. any idea on how to fix this? thx
As Raziel was "delayed" by Malek Vorador killed the circle members this happens before Kain was born, he got turned by Mortanius after being killed by some thugs he hired. Also Mortanius was possesed by a "dark figure" the Hylden lord(bo2) and he killed Ariel which drove Nupraptor insane infecting the council.Because Kain was the new destined Guardian Of Balance and he refused to sacrifice himself in order for new guardians to be chosen the hylden are free to enter the world.
@Effigyq2e1m7 Actually by refusing the sacrifice he stops the pillars from being restored but it also stops their complete collapse, If he refused the sacrifice then the binding would break and the hylden would be free to enter the world - hence why he is looking for the edge of the coin in defiance.
The pillars were built by the ancient vampires, Janos Audron being the last living one, in order to seal their enemies, the hylden, into another dimension. As they were being sealed they cursed the vampires with the bloodthirst turning them into "monsters" (the paintings in sr2 reveal this part of the story). In Legacy of Kain : Blood Omen you have two options at the end of the game either sacrifice yourself and save the world or don't.(the scond path leads to the future events in the series)
If you don't do any of the extra stuff, probably right around 8 hours for the first playthrough, maybe a little longer. If you go looking for secret areas / things, visit the hidden temple, all that good stuff, probably closer to 12.
"Call your dogs! They can feast on your corpses!" Love this game, the voice acting in the Legacy of Kain series was always top notch. Part of what made it one of the all time greats.
The one thing I've always loved about this game throughout the years, and has (in my opinion) made it so memorable, is the fact that EVERYONE IS AN ASSHOLE! Kain is a selfish sadistic egomaniac in it only for his own base ends, Malek is a fanatic, Nupraptor is batshit insane, and Moebius is an amoral manipulator.
The closest thing you get to a good guy is Vorador, FUCKING VORADOR! lol
Although I do wish he'd release them from the Binding, just so he could properly face them (and kill them). The Hylden have a point, in that they were unfairly banished (some of them, at least).
Sorry for the many posts, and I know it's only my opinion. I'm just saying that the story in the LoK sequels is very detailed, to the point where they actually didn't make the games as good as they could have.
Now, whether the storyline moved in a direction you approve of, that's a different story. ;)
I do admit, I miss the Blood Omen feel of the game. (I even played BO after Soul Reaver, so it's not just nostalgia powering this feeling.)
That feel could be recaptured again, though. If the conclusion to the series involves Kain defeating the Elder God, that leaves plenty of time to slaughter opponents. Now that he doesn't have to worry about Raziel's destiny, he can devote all his to killing his enemies and wiping out the Hylden, ending with the big squid himself.
That's similar to what Kain and Raziel do in Defiance, but the difference is that their lines are much more thorough and aren't just random musings.
The problem is that Blood Omen had a much darker atmosphere than the other games, and the Soul Reaver lost much of the dark feel because of the different team. The graphics also made things seem less dark, like Mortanius' presentation in Defiance.
I'm not sure, I mean Soul Reaver 1 is pretty dark. It's just not blood/guts/cruelty so much as Blood Omen, but dystopic futility instead. Blood Omen had all this background stuff, like the human realms, gypsies, weird temples, cannibalism, werewolves, and cults, which goes in the other games. But the narrative pacing of the later games is pretty genius.
If you look at this game, there's only 25 minutes of dialogue moving the story forward. (It says so on back of the box, so that's not an estimate.) There's a lot more in the subsequent games. Outside of the cutscenes, which are short, only Kain's dialogue moves the story forward and gives us insight, because the NPCs can't talk (they only say 2 lines, for the most part) and the graphics in BO aren't detailed enough for close-up observations. The other games are much more finely detailed.
This is strictly from a timeline perspective, of course. I know we didn't know about all the crap about Raziel and so forth, before the Soul Reaver games came out. (They hadn't even written it down, obviously.)
The storyline does advance, but it does so in a way that is unusual and different from any other game series. No other series that I know of has its characters zipping back and forth through time carrying out historical events that have already occurred, with only slight modifications.
...sequel in the traditional sense. Blood Omen 2 is a direct continuation to the first game, but even that is deeply ingrained in the timeline. We know Kain survives, and we know he raises the six Sarafan lieutenants to be his servants and travels back to the earlier era. Usually, sequels are direct continuations to the projects before them. We don't know what's going to happen. Here, we are exploring historical events that have already occurred - they were simply unknown to us.
The only 'new' things are Raziel's journey, the events Raziel goes through in Defiance (since he wasn't supposed to survive past his battle with Sarafan Raziel, according to Moebius' design), and Soul Reaver era Kain finally getting to see the Elder God and confront him. All the rest is history. Because of LoK's paradox based timeline and so forth, most of what we're seeing in the subsequent games are historical events that have already occurred. They cannot be changed, nor are they a direct...
I think that's like saying a hamburger is all about the bread and not the meat. o_O The storyline SUSTAINS the LoK series in the later games.
Actually, the sequels expanded on the storyline. The only thing is that they did so in a way that shows more of the game world rather than move the story forward. We're shown the history of the world and how all the players fit, but most of the events portrayed in the sequels are Nosgoth's history, from a certain viewpoint.
Too bad Malek was being held back by Moebius when Vorador was killing off the Circle. Wouldn't have made much difference, but still, too bad all the same
That "guy" is Malek the Paladin of Sarafan Brotherhood and Guardian of Conflict. Play Soul Reaver 2 and you will know why Malek failed to protect the Circle.
a lot of that did not make sense to the story. till you got way far in the game. there are a lot of contradictions to the story too. because there was no sarafan in the origanal time line it was made by Chronus when he used the price's murder to make the army form the North hate vampires. then the Sarafan was later taken over by the Hylden lord and cain was over thrown. then Kain made the Hylden Leders his Lutinets. witch evolved and moved away. they grow up so fast.
lol, I wonder what that guy was doing before he finally decided to come and "save" his bosses? This is why one never have their security too far away...
omfg, I loved this game when it came out! Ya'll remember when AOL back then did the promotion thing where they were giving away t-shirts? I got one, but I had to throw it out because it started to get holes. But, anyway, this was my shit!
Some body needs to make a movie of this game. This would be one great box office film.Imagine the LORD OF THE RINGS movie had good story and graphics. This movie would be much better.
This is the PC version, but the movies were more or less the same. Try playing a PS1 game now (not on an emulator, with your nifty new-fangled graphics cards, on an actual PS1, or a PS2 even) - you'll be surprised by how terrible they look. Remember, we all thought Doom had amazing graphics that'd never be beat, 15 years ago.
I played doom for the first time like 6 months ago I actually liked it but to be fair it was a pc remake that could be played on the gamboy advance but I still wanted to play the extra levels.
@TheOnlySonicFan Yep - but before they removed PS2 backwards compatibility, at least 2 of the other 3 worked fine, so conceivably, those could have been made available, too.
These aren't even graphics dude this is a rendered cut-scene, meaning that the quality of this intro has nothing to do with the PS1's rendering abilities, it's just playing a movie. If we were actually looking at the PS1 version it might look even worse since it would be playing on one of the extremely low-res TV's of the day.
please, please i need a favor i just downloaded yesterday in my ps3 but i dont remenber how he does magic ,because right now im just swinging with a sword can you tell me how? thanks ...W
Up untl BO2 (because games have evolved os much) the Legacy was always ahead of its time with cutscene animation, especially the intros and voice acting.
It's impossible. Maybe it looks the same, but could not have same poperties. There was only one Blood Reaver. If there were more, we would know about that in the game
I remember watching this the first time when I was a lot younger with my older brother playing....it scared the crap out of me....*sighs* good times, good times..
What OS are you running, have you installed the various OS-specific patches, are you running in compatibility mode, are you controlling it via a keyboard or a gamepad?
Malek's true corpse hung in Azimuth Cathederal-the same you see in this introduction, still hung in chains. Theirs also a stained glass window commoraiting Vorador's attack. I think the corpse on the throne was Malek's own private joke, lets face it a man who fuses souls to armour was pretty bitter and angry.
Sorry for the history lesson, huge fan of the series and just clearing the matter up. Blood Omen THE PS3 remake???
This game is my favorite of all the lok series, and they would butcher this game on this gen so it doesn't have to much gore and they would make it easier so any one can finish it, and probably DUMB down the story so any one can understand it.
Whoo, mem'ries. I remember watching my brother play this when I was a kid...I loved seeing that woman disintegrate :P and the "bathed in blood" line. Now I must go to eBay and see if there's a copy I can squander XD
Eeee I bought it too. Much harder than any of the others, I'd say. I'm missing both Soul Reavers....But you're gonna LOVE BO2. It has such a great ambience. Totally makes you feel ''in the moment." Don't let anyone tell you that game sucked, cos it was one of the best in the series!
i liked bo2 too. i think others don't like it just cause its kinda weird in the storyline. but it was the first LOK game i played and got me hooked on the franchise.
bo2 is really good, maybe people dont like it because its slower moving, different artistic style, and questionable canonicity, but it is a cracking game
About Malek: I think he, as the leader of Sarathan order, as the Guardian of conflict and as one of the greatest warriors in Nosgoth... is shown as a doll puppet of Moebius and Mortanius... Looks like he is a zombie, nothing more. I think he deserves a better illustration.
@TheThordir Actually, I think the "new aeon" could either mean Kain's rule or the restoration of Nosgoth due to Kain's sacrifice. I say this because originally Blood Omen, I read once was originally a stand alone game with no planned sequels. Sorry for the many posts, and I know it's only my opinion. I'm just saying that the story in the LoK sequels is very detailed, to the point where they actually didn't make the games as good as they could have.
Now, whether the storyline moved in a direction you approve of, that's a different story. ;)
PyramidHead316 2 years ago
I do admit, I miss the Blood Omen feel of the game. (I even played BO after Soul Reaver, so it's not just nostalgia powering this feeling.)
That feel could be recaptured again, though. If the conclusion to the series involves Kain defeating the Elder God, that leaves plenty of time to slaughter opponents. Now that he doesn't have to worry about Raziel's destiny, he can devote all his to killing his enemies and wiping out the Hylden, ending with the big squid himself.
PyramidHead316 2 years ago
That's similar to what Kain and Raziel do in Defiance, but the difference is that their lines are much more thorough and aren't just random musings.
The problem is that Blood Omen had a much darker atmosphere than the other games, and the Soul Reaver lost much of the dark feel because of the different team. The graphics also made things seem less dark, like Mortanius' presentation in Defiance.
PyramidHead316 2 years ago
@PyramidHead316
But the narrative pacing of the later games is pretty genius.
csvtom 1 year ago
If you look at this game, there's only 25 minutes of dialogue moving the story forward. (It says so on back of the box, so that's not an estimate.) There's a lot more in the subsequent games. Outside of the cutscenes, which are short, only Kain's dialogue moves the story forward and gives us insight, because the NPCs can't talk (they only say 2 lines, for the most part) and the graphics in BO aren't detailed enough for close-up observations. The other games are much more finely detailed.
PyramidHead316 2 years ago
This is strictly from a timeline perspective, of course. I know we didn't know about all the crap about Raziel and so forth, before the Soul Reaver games came out. (They hadn't even written it down, obviously.)
The storyline does advance, but it does so in a way that is unusual and different from any other game series. No other series that I know of has its characters zipping back and forth through time carrying out historical events that have already occurred, with only slight modifications.
PyramidHead316 2 years ago
...sequel in the traditional sense.
PyramidHead316 2 years ago
The only 'new' things are Raziel's journey, the events Raziel goes through in Defiance (since he wasn't supposed to survive past his battle with Sarafan Raziel, according to Moebius' design), and Soul Reaver era Kain finally getting to see the Elder God and confront him. All the rest is history. Because of LoK's paradox based timeline and so forth, most of what we're seeing in the subsequent games are historical events that have already occurred. They cannot be changed, nor are they a direct...
PyramidHead316 2 years ago
I think that's like saying a hamburger is all about the bread and not the meat. o_O The storyline SUSTAINS the LoK series in the later games.
Actually, the sequels expanded on the storyline. The only thing is that they did so in a way that shows more of the game world rather than move the story forward. We're shown the history of the world and how all the players fit, but most of the events portrayed in the sequels are Nosgoth's history, from a certain viewpoint.

This game was awesome! The sequels were all about graphics and not storyline.

ferretfettish 2 years ago
a lot of that did not make sense to the story. till you got way far in the game. there are a lot of contradictions to the story too. because there was no sarafan in the origanal time line it was made by Chronus when he used the price's murder to make the army form the North hate vampires. then the Sarafan was later taken over by the Hylden lord and cain was over thrown. then Kain made the Hylden Leders his Lutinets. witch evolved and moved away. they grow up so fast.

horrible graphics but i don't think this is ps1 ? i think ps1 had better graphics ...at least that's what i remember xD
reymyman 2 years ago
This is the PC version, but the movies were more or less the same. Try playing a PS1 game now (not on an emulator, with your nifty new-fangled graphics cards, on an actual PS1, or a PS2 even) - you'll be surprised by how terrible they look. Remember, we all thought Doom had amazing graphics that'd never be beat, 15 years ago.
Joudas 2 years ago
I played doom for the first time like 6 months ago I actually liked it but to be fair it was a pc remake that could be played on the gamboy advance but I still wanted to play the extra levels.

@TheOnlySonicFan Yep - but before they removed PS2 backwards compatibility, at least 2 of the other 3 worked fine, so conceivably, those could have been made available, too.

These aren't even graphics dude this is a rendered cut-scene, meaning that the quality of this intro has nothing to do with the PS1's rendering abilities, it's just playing a movie. If we were actually looking at the PS1 version it might look even worse since it would be playing on one of the extremely low-res TV's of the day.

what sword Vorador has ? It looks like it's the boold reaver, but that is impossible
youtiber123321 2 years ago
Vorador forged the Blood Reaver, so it's not unlikely that he forged multiple swords like it, if not with the same properties.
Joudas 2 years ago
It's impossible. Maybe it looks the same, but could not have same poperties. There was only one Blood Reaver. If there were more, we would know about that in the game

What OS are you running, have you installed the various OS-specific patches, are you running in compatibility mode, are you controlling it via a keyboard or a gamepad?
Joudas 2 years ago
i have windows xp with sp2, i tried to play it in compatibility mode with win95, and im using keyboard/mouse
macibax 2 years ago
Google 'blood omen xp patch' - download that, install it, and play it without compatibility mode. That should work better for you.
Joudas 2 years ago
Just get a PSX version and play in emulator, much easier than bothering with patches and stuff.

Sasabonsam 2 years ago
Malek's true corpse hung in Azimuth Cathederal-the same you see in this introduction, still hung in chains. Theirs also a stained glass window commoraiting Vorador's attack. I think the corpse on the throne was Malek's own private joke, lets face it a man who fuses souls to armour was pretty bitter and angry.
Sorry for the history lesson, huge fan of the series and just clearing the matter up. Blood Omen THE PS3 remake???
Nic01224 2 years ago
Poor Malek. Moebius was the one who stopped him from being there for that buxom bald lass!
How come Malek's bones aren't put in the Sarafan tomb, but he's still memorialised in it? Punishment?
masterofthedeck 2 years ago 4
IN BO man when Kain enters the stronghold of Malek he sees Malek's corps sitting frozen in a throne.
Then when Kain comments on his corps malak says the kick ass line:
I'm far less interested in my own corps than in your corps....PREPARE TO DIE VAMPIRE.
Man BO 1 is a kick ass game tell today with one of the best script line ever in a game.

I hope the don't , do a remake about this game
This game is my favorite of all the lok series, and they would butcher this game on this gen so it doesn't have to much gore and they would make it easier so any one can finish it, and probably DUMB down the story so any one can understand it.
So please don't ask for remakes of classic games

Thats right too, but every good story must be finished :)

Now I must find Soul Reaver, SR2, Blood Omen 2 and Defiance!
SolidMike84 2 years ago
Eeee I bought it too. Much harder than any of the others, I'd say. I'm missing both Soul Reavers....But you're gonna LOVE BO2. It has such a great ambience. Totally makes you feel ''in the moment." Don't let anyone tell you that game sucked, cos it was one of the best in the series!
CaptainCrane 2 years ago
And now I've aquired Soul Reaver ^^ But I've got to wait til the 26th in order to be able 2 pay for it before they send it :P
Don't worry, I respect peoples opinions about games but I rather try the games myself before I cast judgement upon them ^^

i liked bo2 too. i think others don't like it just cause its kinda weird in the storyline. but it was the first LOK game i played and got me hooked on the franchise.

bo2 is really good, maybe people dont like it because its slower moving, different artistic style, and questionable canonicity, but it is a cracking game
mrdavyp 2 years ago
About Malek: I think he, as the leader of Sarathan order, as the Guardian of conflict and as one of the greatest warriors in Nosgoth... is shown as a doll puppet of Moebius and Mortanius... Looks like he is a zombie, nothing more. I think he deserves a better illustration.
