  • It had good possibliities.

I would like to see it come back and they do stuff on Earth and Space

  • What you say MAYONNAISE!

  • from wich year?

  • i loved this show, but liked mork and mindy, the a team, knight rider, dukes of hazzard better.

  • May I ask: were there any other boys besides me who only watched this show because they had a crush on Peter Barton?

  • That's so funny that this is on YouTube. My brother did the drums for all of the music in this how.

  • I loves thsi show soo much back in teh day:)

  • Thank you!!!!!! I have a friend who will be extremely grateful for this!!! :D

  • haaaaaaaaaaaaaahahahahahahah that noise when the guy use's his power!! how could i forget that!

  • haaaaaaaaaaaaaahahahahahahah that nice when the guy use's his power!! how could i forget that!

  • Didnt this guy end up on a soap and getting killed by Jason Voorhees?

  • @Bladestar7:Yes.

  • I remember watching this show all the time...had a HUGE crush on Peter Barton! At the time I wished I had telekinetic powers too. Now I think that show was so corny!

  • should have aired longer!

  • lol better than masked rider

  • The only reason to watch this show was the high-budget opening titles.

  • Gee, I just saw this same plot in a movie today--"I am Number Four". Is nothing original?

  • @stopdrop2roll: 'I Am Number Four' is based on a series of novels; the plot is only coincidentally similar to that of 'The Powers Of Matthew Star, and no, 'I Am Number Four' is not a ripoff.

  • i have a book about an pyro accident on the set.

a cover of a newspaper tv guide san jose mercury news sticks out in my mind

    as a kid

  • I think this was more remembered for an accident on the set. I only remember this for around the same time of the greatest american hero. I remember I think they decided to talk about this new sghow on the San Jose Mercury News TV GUIDE which had a picture of the show on the cover, where the guy is leaning on a table, arms spreat at the ends holding himself up, thats all I can remember and how best to describe it.

  • CHAPPY :P

  • Ok now I know where I had originally seen the blonde chick from Friday the 13th part 2, they played this here in Australia in the mid 80's I think, I remember I really liked it but I can't remember any of it now, cheers for the trip down memory lane

  • Does anyone know where to find the original Matthew Star bumpers?

  • In a better world, there would've been an epic Matthew Star / Puma Man / Greatest American Hero crossover miniseries

  • i like the scene at 1:28

  • I agree with trapey

  • Problem was, the opening credits was most exciting thing that ever happened.

  • I wouldn't have minded if this show would've lasted longer even though it was nearly as phenomenal or as entertaining as KNIGHT RIDER was.

  • I distinctly recall this short-lived series very well since it came out on NBC 28 years ago back in the Fall of 1982 the same year KNIGHT RIDER made its debut & used to come out every Friday night at 8PM followed by KNIGHT RIDER at 9PM, but I think part of what led to this shows cancellation after only being on NBC for a year was because this show couldn't compete or keep up with the ratings on KNIGHT RIDER since KNIGHT RIDER was the bomb back then wiping everything out in the Nielsen ratings.

  • WOOT WOOT!!! 90,000th!!!

  • i don't even remember this turd!

  • Star Wars sounds and racial equality, all in the same show? DAMN LIBERAL JEW MEDIA!

  • 1:29 unity.

  • Meesterlijk!

    Ben meteen weer 8 jaar!

    Mooie herinneringen aan die tijd!

  • this is a good show, i only wish the BBC in my country would stop being misers and spend as much money on our sci fi shows as the americans do.

  • @doctorw2

Atleast you don't live in South Africa its worse

  • @doctorw2: I'd say that having Doctor Who, Torchwood, and The Sarah Jane Adventures qualifies as having great sci-fi shows that have great production values, wouldn't you? Don't sell yourselves short.

  • @Neville6000 no i was talking about the special affects back in the 1970 and 1980s american sci fi shows spend more money on their shows than do the BBC if doctor who had the special affects this show had back in the 1980s it would have been just spectacular!

  • Peter was so HOt and nice back then!

  • Wow! Earth is safe, but they are constantly getting found by assassins anyway. Who'da thunk it?? :)

  • Mmm-hmm...just how 'special' is he daddy?

  • "He's a typical American teenager."

Well, he's a typical American TV teenager. He's about 25.

  • Dum

  • wow! this show is rare!

  • WOW!! I forgot about THE ORIGINAL SMALLVILLE on NBC. HOLY MOLY!!! =)

  • Whats TV land waiting for...

  • what is THIS show? and is that a young louis gossett jr. i see?

  • Somehow I'm reminded of Smalleville or Buffy the Vampire Slayer series. :-)

  • I'm old enough to remember this story, but does anyone else remember that Peter Barton actually lied about his age by three or four years. Once that came out, that sort of did away with his time in teen mags.

  • Where have I heard this story before? Hmmm....sounds very familiar.

  • That show was cheesy and stupid, yet I watched at least half of the series.

  • Damn, this show sucked. Yet I watched every episode.

  • @trapey

    Yeah. Me, too

  • @trapey Yeah, but back then we were oblivious to the suckivity of it!! I loved this show and "The Phoenix..." Remember that show?

  • 12 light years away, and galaxies are 100,000 or more light years across. And separated by millions of light years. So this "intergalactic force" can take over a planet, but defenseless earth which is basically its next door neighbor becomes a sanctuary for a boy. Ok whatever.

  • Yet, people love this show, and will defend it to the death, while condemning any current sci-fi show on the air-amazing, isn't it?

  • @michael38921 That's what I love about 80's sci-fi -- they just made it up! Knight rider, Max Headroom, etc... were more sicence fantasy than fiction in terms of the "magic" they never explained. Of course the general public was none the wiser back then, most people in the mid 80's didn't even own a home computer. Audiences today are much more savy.

  • i remember the show. Classic 80s tv. Wow those were the days. If i could just go back for a year or two.

  • Tom Cruise & Heather Locklear actually auditioned for this same TV show. I'm telling the truth. I saw actual audition footage on an entertainment show.

  • really where

  • The Powers of Matthew Star... OMG I remember this pile of shit.

  • Love how they reuse the old TIE Fighter and X-wing laser cannon sound effects . . . ;)

  • Epilogue:

After the last episode aired his home planet was enslaved and Matthew Starr was killed. Just wanted everyone to know how it ended.

  • thank you for that important piece of info!....cause some of us were left hanging!!

  • Very funny.....

And at the end of Lost, everyone is going to figure out it's all a dream and they're in a Vegas casino.

  • @conradragzoff: Except that, they didn't, and the ending is better than this show (as is the movie/novel I Am Number Four.)

  • Werent Peter Barton and Amy Steel in various Friday the 13th movies?

  • Amy Steel was in the first movie, but Peter Barton was in a low-budget movie called Hell Night with Linda Blair..

  • Yes. Amy Steel appeared in the second film and Pter Barton was in "The Final Chapter", the 4th Friday The 13th movie.

  • RIght On!

  • In the U.S. it was scheduled on NBC during the 1982-83 season to be shown on Friday nights at 8pm.

  • @apotheounSTK

Originally this was ment to premiere halfway during the '81-82

season, but was pushed back to the fall after Barton landed in

the hospital after a scene in which a firebomb went array, which

lead to 2nd degree burns on his upper body,as I recall!!!!

  • I remember this show well. Thanks for posting.

  • Vaguely remember watching it then again maybe not

  • Holy..holy....HOLY moley. I can't. No way. Not even. Damn I was like....

I have no words for how surprised I am somone found this intro. I think I might have to dig up my VHS and see what I have from the 80's.

  • Poor Lou Gosset, great actor caught in a 80's sci-fi tv show whose best special effect was a book levitated with a string.

  • Era divertido este programa.

  • ya i think it was NBC because did't it follow Nite rider?

  • I loved this show! Used to watch this one all the time, it was a good one! :D

  • Look @ Louis Gossett, jr. Looking like a black Professor X.

  • It was on NBC.

  • i think DEF channel

  • Does anyone remember what network this show came on in the 80's? I vaguely remember it.

  • ABC

  • I remember it as NBC.

  • And Peter Barton got trapped in soap-opera hell (as well as being cast on the mid-90's re-do of Burke's Law as the son of Amos Burke.)

  • i miss the classis Sci Fi channel. :(

  • retro television network is way better than tvland. This show was one of my favorites!

  • i miss this serie love it

  • so did lucasfilm not bother to copyright the sound effects from Star Wars or what? actually, he probably just licensed that shit out....i'll bet he gets a royalty check for every laser blast.

  • OMG! Have I forgotten this show? Did it ever go off the air so soon?

  • This was one of my favorite shows as a kid thanks for posting! Funny to see the intro again.

  • tom cruise came in second on the casting of this show.

  • I have been looking for this show for 15 years, I happend to like it.....thanks for the post man.

  • I watched a lot of tv in the 80s but I never heard of this show before. I remember the guy was on a tv show called Shazzam in the 70s. This was certainly a step down for Lou Gossett considering he had won a Oscar for A Officer and a Gentleman.

  • This brings back a lot of memories. I was 13 and in eigth grade when it first aired on NBC (Channel 5 in Chicago).

  • Interesting show. It was weird to see Lou Gossett after winning the Oscar on cheap sci fi tv.

  • this came out first then his oscar

  • Actually, I remember An Officer and a Gentlemen coming out first, my friend. That movie premeired in '82 and TPOMS came out late '82 or early '83 on NBC.

  • thanks it's been so long ago i forgot, i do remember they changed the show half way into the season from him bring a high school student to both of them being on the run.

  • Y'know, can you tell me why TV LAND isn't showing programs like this? Isn't this what the channel was created for? I stopped watching TVL just for not showing old shows like TPOMS!

  • because tvland like all these other channels dont have time for shows all they want is i love new york, or the nanny, or g too gents!

  • used to watch tv land all the time now they have gotten sorry with there line ups especially at night time with all them stupid set dumbs, set cons, they need to bring back the hillibillies, hogans heros, little house shows like that mean now they even got stupid reality shows on

  • But TV Land Canada DOES show programs like this of this vintage, all of the time now-although they show each program TWICE an hour.

  • That's Canada, Neville. Unfortunately, TVL USA isn't as smart. There's great stuff out there like Automan, S.W.A.T., Police Story, The Rifleman, The Man From Atlantis. Do I need to go on?

  • @RX552VBK: Perhaps they're not showing it because it's complete caca?

  • Judson Scott star of the short lived series Phoenix played an Alien Villain with super human strength in the only episode that can remember from this series. I believe he was crushed by stack old cars in a junkyard by Star using his mind powers. Scott was also in Blade he was Dragon Eddies Assistant on the Vampire council.

  • star wars laser sound effects lol!

  • is that what you can call a Buddy-show?, does it relay on 2 different characters together?

  • Forgot how crappy this show was.

  • I was SO disappointed when this got canceled.

    Well, I *was* nine. :)

  • is that what you can call a Buddy-show?, does it relay on 2 different characters together?

  • Wow! This so so much less cool than I remember it being. Sometimes old childhood memories are best left alone.

  • Problem was, the opening credit space fight was the only part worth watching.

  • Few people realize this was based upon a true story.

  • LMAO. I believe they live somewhere in the great area of Gotham.

  • So if the badguy aliens knew this prince was on earth, why did they screw around sending assassins?

Why didn't they just smash earth with an asteroid?

  • He's special.

  • Thanks for the vid - brings back memories. I named my son's black kitty after D'Hai - but spelled it wrong! LOL

  • What a waste of Lou Gossett Jr.'s talent in such a lame short lived sci-fi show.

  • All actors rise from hole, all! are humans and die like people , the only difference is money ...

  • You're not the only one to feel that way.

  • I was a total wuss in grade school, but I think that if any of my classmates had come to school with a Matthew Star lunch pail, I woulda kicked the living shit outta them.

  • This show was such an amazing disappointment for a 10 year old. It had this killer intro and looked like a bad ass sci-fi show. But no, it was basically a cheap teen drama with odd bits of alien intrigue. Total rip.

  • "...basically a cheap teen drama with odd bits of alien intrigue. Total rip."

So, in many ways it was a prototype for 'Roswell'?

  • No, because Roswell had better writing and characters, and wasn't as critically lambasted as this show was, which got ripped a new one by every critic in America.

  • I agree; I was mostly kidding about the dig on 'Roswell'. I love 'Roswell' and have the entire series on DVD -- no joke.

  • I liked the music theme most

  • I rememmber watching this show when i was about 8 or 9. I was so madly in love with Peter Barton. It was not a crush, I was in love, seriously. lol

  • They should have called Child Serivces on my mom and older sister. They made us watch this crap on Fridays. We wanted to watch The Dukes of Hazzards.

  • recuerdo poco el show me gustaba los poders

  • This was my favorite show! I wish they had given it a shot. It was good!

  • I always liked Powers of Matthew Star. Too bad NBC never gave it a chance. I watched it every week and each episode was fun.

  • i agree

  • Thanks for posting this! Brings back old memories. Gotta love 80's sci-fi tv.

  • O H M Y G O D ! ! ! I also remember this show and I can agree with some of the comments in here too... How DID they got away with STAR WARS sounds? Indeed. I also remember him leaving his body, but he had to leave the other body safe... If the unconscious body died, so does his "soul". There's an episode just about that. I must've been bout 5, but I watched it in spanish (Las Aventuras de Matthew Star) on Channel 2 in Puerto Rico. Louis Gossett Jr. plays Chappy. Viva los 80's!!!

  • wow! i saw this show once when i was 8, then it got canned..never forgot it tho lol top show

  • LOL

I remember watching this with my mom when I was a kid...

  • How on earth did they get away with using the sound effects from Star Wars? :P

  • Battlestar Gallactica sounds! Not SW!

  • Nope. They're definately Star Wars sound effects.

  • fuck you Peter Barton is my best friend's unlce.

  • I remember this show, friday nights @ 8pm on nbc4-new york, about 1982-83

  • I asked my friends if they remember "The powers of Mathew Star"....NO ONE remembers until NOW! He was able to leave his body too! Wish I could see some of the old episodes!

  • you can

this gentleman has all of them

    sierramoon131

  • NO RELATIONS!

  • This could have been Tom Cruise's debut series, but he was turned down.

  • jeugdsentiment :-)

  • where did you find this - wow!

  • So then.......when i saw this i wanted to be him!

and you know what......i think every one wants to be like him.

it was a short series indeed Mrceleb2006 but it was all the time it needed.

why else would i state something like this 30 years later hehehehe.

    he sure my hero.

did anyone of you had experiences with the powers of mathew star?

  • found a site link at the yahoo fan club site, freewebs dot com/quadris/ if anyone is interested. I didn't know the show was re-aired on sci-fi channel.

  • oh my gawd! that brings back memories! LOL Was just comparing someone else to peter barton and had to do a search on matthew star and found this and the other clip. memories!

  • Oh. My. God. Finally... Someone ELSE remembers this aside from myself!!! lol. YES!!!

    AWESOME UPLOAD!!!

  • jaaaaaaaaaa matthew star !!!

  • I have the complete series on DVD. spockvideo at gmail dot com

  • It's shame it didn't get more seasons.

I see they won't let me post websites here, but I have a fan site for Matthew Star at:

    freewebs under "quadris"

  • NBC aired this series for only one season (1982-1983).

  • I don't know what the hell you just said but it seems cool, lol. Battlestar Galactica & Star Trek ALSO rule!!!, lol.

  • Strijd der Planeten idd... dat was toch tijdens Avro's kinderbios? Daar zat ook Schateiland in en Spook en nog wat van die tekenfilms :-)

  • OMG!! where did you find this, I remember seeing this on the Dutch telly when I was a mere lad. Been looking for this on the web for ages now.

    Hopefully they'll release it on DVD...ever :P

  • Interesting how they use Star Wars TIE fighter blast sounds. I remember back then thinking to myself...HEY Those are TIE Fighters I hear. Guess Ben Burt allowed them to use his soundeffects

  • Classic Shep! I love Louis Gossett Junior!!

  • Very newsy, I'd say... 5/5!

  • toen had je nog echte jeugd series!

  • I was about 11 when I used to watch this and Matthew Star was the first guy ever I fell in love with..

  • Damn, I remember watching this! And can that intro be any more early 80's? ;-)

How many seasons did it go for?

  • WOW! Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

  • Whow, that's a very long time ago since I've seen this,I was about 6 years ols at that time.

But I have one thing in common with Peter Barton,we were born at the same date,he is exactly 18 years older than me.I really enjoyed that show.

  • True, I think the credits were alot more interesting than the show itself. Even after 20 plus years, I still remember the original closing theme song. As KPCarter2000 put it, the music is awesome.

  • The credits were more interesting than the show ever was.

  • wow this is so crazy, I remember it use to come on chanel 4, ah man

  • if anyone has the closing credits for the powers of matthew starr (the first version) the music is awesome. Please post it..?

  • Pretty early Louis Gossit Jr. appearance here.

  • OH MY GOD! I used to watch this. Now watching the intro....I can tell those sound F/X were taken from Star Wars. Those are TIE Fighters. Still a fun show back in the day.
