Russia/USSR won the space race because they were FIRST IN SPACE. It's called "space race", after all. USSR had the first satellite in space, first animal in space, first man in space, first woman in space, first space walk, and even the first unmanned apparatus to the moon! Sure, it was unmanned but it was made, launched and controlled by the Soviet (not American) men! So, something Soviet/Russian touched the moon first. Haha! =)
