  • This is very nice and constructive, this is what drumming should be about... sharing ;-) So i thank you for that, many thanks man...

  • learn to read music...at least rhythm...it's very simple and much more proffesional...have fun :-)

  • Great Job! My buddy and I are into the Drumming Languages as well. I don't own the DVDs but he does, and I have Video Commented the same patterns using kicks through the letters, and a straight ostinato with my hands. The trick with my rendition of these patterns is that for every • play as a double... • - - - (Double Single Single Single) for example. Just trying to EXPAND on Benny's teaching as you are trying to do. (Nice kit too, I thought I saw a TD-9 and a TD-3 module??)

  • @dwells5703 Hi man, thanks for the comment :)

Its a TD9 only. The TD3 you think you saw was probably the RM-2 attached to the auxiliary pad I use as a floor tom.. its a tiny sound bank and metroname for practicing sticking with. I no longer use the RM-2 module, just the pad.

  • I was considering whether or not to buy the DVD, and not only is this helpful, but it pretty much sold me on it. Benny Greb should probably thank you.

  • with your method, there's also the added training of listening and remembering the upcoming rhythm while playing the current pattern, i personally would find it easier to read it, but you've created something thing very handy for people that can't read yet, nice work.

  • Awesome!

  • Hey,

    thanks for the practice MP3's

    Far easier than rewinding constantly

I am sure Benny likes a good idea added to his DVD

    peace )

  • These hihat beats are the 14 standard check patterns that everyone that has ever marched drum corps is painfully familiar with, but in reverse order. They are infinitely useful.

  • Nice expansion on Greb's workout. I really liked the idea of cueing what was coming next with the conga/bongo sound on your samples.

  • Thank you for making the mp3's man! Really helpful during practice. And thank Benny of course for developing the lesson in the first place

  • Oh it seemed to cut my comment in half!! Ah well, the last patterns were 1+a, 2+a, 3+a, 4+a. 1ea, 2ea, 3ea, 4ea, then all four sixteenth and finally none!

Same rules apply to the hats and snare.

My cut off message was also praising your mp3s, they're really good! Great idea!

  • Is there not 14 patterns?

The patterns are simple enough to remember.

They go (1 note / 2 note / 3 note / 4 note) if your snare and hat are a constant then your kick will be on - each quarter note, each "e" within the pattern, each "+" within the pattern and each "a" within the pattern.

Then they will move to two kick drums, 1e, 2e, 3e, 4e - then e+ of each group, then +a of each group and lastly in the twos. a1, a2,a3, a4.

The threes consist of 1e+, 2e+, 3e+, 4e+. Then e+a of each group,

  • great idea

  • Great dvd!

  • @MrDWdrums25 I think you missed the point... I wasnt showing my "skilllz"... I was assisting other Benny students. Whats poor is your lack of comprehension as to what this video was about. The mp3s are uploaded and free, and I think they are helpful. Your derogative comments however, are not.

  • @Baekmagoji Funny you should mention being a teacher......as I have been one for over a decade. Not drums though. Glad that many people watched this video and found it useful. When I made it, I had no idea if it would just be a 10 view disaster or a hit. Seems to be well received, which is cool. Hope the mp3s help

  • @HeisW140 Don't call his lack of comprehension poor; just let him be an ignorant little twat. You can't fix stupid. And this is quite the clear case. ;)

Either way, I found this very informative and I'm actually going to start using these exercises in conjunction with the DvD. You'd make a swell teacher, man. Great job on the video. :)

  • @HeisW140 Ironic its a"DW Drummer" who's been derogatory xD. This supplement is generous and useful, thankyou for providing it :)

  • @MrDWdrums25 This guy is doing something useful, helpful and constructive. Maybe it would be better if you shared with us, in detail , what you think is poor. I don't see anything in whole video that is poor. I especially agree with his suggestion to Hudson Music to use MP3's. Your comment, at the very least, shows a complete lack of creativity.

  • good job man, the dvd is great

  • cheers, thanks for the link. these mp3's will be helpful

  • Thank you. i also have the DVD and find this very useful in applying the excercise to the drumset.

  • This excercise is on the Bryan "Brain" Mantia dvd/vcr lesson from the 90's. Shredding Repis on the Gnar Gnar rad. I suggest you all check it out.

  • this is a really cool idea, man... i have the DVD and i have the poster with all the 'letters' on the wall of my drum room so i can just follow along while i play... this idea of following along to an audio track to help reinforce the grooves is a huge help... especially to get a kick start on it as you say... i think some drummers would get a little discouraged and give it up... even though the exercises are great... cheers from Canada!

  • travis barker is better

  • @Wowurgaylol travis barker is pretty terrible and if you knew anything about drums youd realize that

  • @LandOfPerpetualJelly look at the username...

Clearly making a mockery of YouTube comments there!

  • i dont know all exercices that benny gives... but men, thats exercices have looooongs years, i hope he dont say they are they own exercices... there are maaaaaany books with that stuff... linear fraces and others

and men!... well done! you get your way to learn and i think that its the important thing, start being .." autodidact", that bongo seems to be much useful for you!

  • Have these mp3s been removed? I can't seem to find them on that site.

  • @tylercjbradshaw Maybe you typed the addy it in incorrectly. ;-) I checked and they are all still there and working.

  • it could be that i have a learning disability, but i have long noticed that various things i've wished to learn are made to be difficult because of how they are taught. sometimes it seems like the coolest things are kept veiled behind mysterious archaic teachings because the ones who already know enjoy some type of feeling of elitism or superiority.... oh yea.. my point was to thank you, for doing the exact opposite of that.

  • @TheElenchusMethod No problem man - I feel exactly the same way - Ive watched numerous videos and the "teacher" basically shows how awesome he is and you end up feeling like hes missed the point and you missed the lesson

  • brilliant! thank you!

  • cheers man. really good. in the interests of good will.

  • good stuff man, thanks.. this helps alot

  • Just got back into drumming... and you have a td 20?

    cool

  • @MetalCode No SIr, its a td9k - crappy rubber kick pad not the mesh head.... but aside from that its ideal for me. I want to upgrade to the mesh kick, but its about 400 bucks... thats just insane.

  • Really good stuff.

I, like you, sometimes struggle to get my head around some of the concepts that I need to understand to improve. Things like your video really help, and make me think of better ways of learning. So thanks. Also, you are not terrible. Just put some more ambience on the TD-9 when recording it. :D

  • thanks a lot man, you have the right attitude to make this crazy world a better place!!!^

    Peace&Grooveªªª

  • wow thank you so much i own and love his dvd but this helps me TONS thanks man!

  • Hi there. Great work!! I use this concept myself for learning stuff.

Could you make some mp3s in a slower tempo? Perhaps 60... Just to get really grounded!? :-)

    Best

    Mikas

  • This is so cool. I'm working on those letter patterns using the DVD from Hudson. This work along is terrific... Very good idea !!!

  • cheers mate!

  • actually it was terribly played, but it was for demo purposes, not showmanship. Thanks for the support tho...hahaha

  • @HeisW140

that wasnt terrible at all. well done

  • @rrratatam You are too kind - I suspect a drum teacher - no one could hear that and go "that was good" like a teacher could hahaha

  • easy but well played.

  • ur a kiwi?

  • @Jesse4ManBob Yes, indeed I am.

  • Very interesting approach, but if I understand the intention of the DVD right, it´s about feeling or thinking the permutations instead of hearing them (bongo), otherwise you´ll get problems when playing live ´cause there´s no one to give you the next phrase (or like Jojo Mayer says: If you want to play fast, you have to think fast). But I see your point and maybe it´s a useful alternative to START with.

  • @GerriNagarin Yeah, its just a guide to get you started - simply because it was frustrating. Thinking about the change detracted from feeling the current groove. I played live and studio for years (10 years ago) so I dont think the bongo is going to remove your ability to play live... and i doubt this particular exercise would be played live anyhow hahaha... normally you dont jam live - you rehearse a lot beforehand, so the changes become second nature. very few can ad-lib live successfully.

  • Thank you very much for putting this together and sharing it with everyone! I have the DVD as well, its great, but i agree with you, the exercises are hard to remember, without printing them all out and reading them, or trying to read them off a laptop screen or sumthin.

So I'm gonna download these mp3s and play along! I've been meaning to go through the rest of the DVD for a while

  • @multimusician Glad they are useful. Ive got a bunch of other DVDs with the same "memory" issue, such as double kick workouts etc... I might do the same thing for those too, as I have made mp3s for them as well... my ipods full off different exercises... much handier to just scroll thru the ipod, than search thru DVDs everyday. Thanks for the comment, and good luck with the exercises!
