Those were gar, not sturgeon. They both jump on that river, but gar are more common. I live near here, paddle here pretty often. Next time, go up from highway 87 about two hours upriver. There's a beautiful, pristine spring-fed creek on the right side of the river that's great for paddling.
Looks like a nice, easy and relaxing trip. My wife and I took a 64 mile trip down the Broad River in South Carolina and we were busting tail trying to get all that mileage into a 4 day weekend. Nothing beats time on the water with good company! Great video!
Great video! A friend and i have done a few trips like this. Can you recommend any other rivers. We've started a facebook page "Midsouth Hook and Paddle" Please feel free to leave some comments or info for others.
Great video guys. I've got a camp on the Shoal River right near "the mystery sign" you found, but I swear I would never make you uncomfortable with purty mouth comments. I can't speak for my neighbors though......... My friends and I spend a great deal of time kayaking and camping on these rivers. I'm glad to see someone else enjoying them as much as I do. The Yellow and Shoal Rivers are some of the best natural wilderness areas left in FL.
Thanks to you guys for sharing this trip. You've inspired me to try some kayak camping this summer. Your campfires look great, and the river seems like an easy does it.

I was on this river Saturday June 20, 2009 and the weekend before too. We enjoyed grilling, swimming, and kayaking as well.
