My great grandad was a bare knuckle fighter, 400 fights unbeaten! My grandad told me he only fought when money was put on the table, even if you insulted him he would't bother!!! Heard one of the best fighters in britain at that time was even scared of him, wish i'd met him but he died before i was born!

Getting hit by McLean dont seem that bad - it took him about 50 shots to put that guy down. Either Klitchko, Haye, Lewis, would have put him out cold with a decent one-two if they were getting free throws like that. Shit, a half decent light heavy would probably have knocked him out quicker.

Roy Shaw should have won. He gave him a few clouts out of the ring but never won in it out of bad luck. Lenny refused to fight him except for in the ring. You can see here how fucking hard he was. The pounding he took and the straight up and ready to go again. Shame it never happened for him.

@apollonas101 Hey, I'm not denying that Kimbo had/has potential, but he changed his fighting stance drastically when he went pro. His old stance was rock solid. Most of the vids I've seen were him fighting people who had no business in bareknuckle, even then, he get's rocked with a few solid punches in some of them, had his opponents not run out of steam, they could have easily taken him out. I would wager money if he went back to his old fighting style, he'd kick more ass.
One thing is for certain. Roy Shaw could take a punch. That first barrage from McClean and he took plenty to the head and was straight back up and McClean can hit. Roy was just too wild, more control needed. Never stood a chance fighting like a bull with his head down. McClean could just grab him round the neck and pull him forward and lay into him. But why is it that there is such little available footage of these men fighting? You hear these wild tales of Lenny, Roy, Cliff Fields, etc. They fought in the 80's so why is the footage so scant?
It just seems strange that they are now looked upon as such legends, but at the time, no one even found these fights worthy enough to film?

I've wondered the same thing and there are two main reasons. Lenny only fought about 8 times in the ring, he claims to have 4000 fights under his belt and 99.9 % of these took place on the "cobbles" or streets in the 60's 70's and early 80's in the East End of London. Whenever he was involved in a scheduled bare knuckle fight there was nobody taping them, guaranteed nobody in the crowd even owned a camera. There is other footage of him fighting, but just not on Youtube. Privately owned etc.
@JohnLoCicero They were streetfighters and unlicenced boxers fighting at a time when only the rich had video cameras and there were no camera phones.... also meaning the fights were never televised!!... Getting hit by McLean dont seem that bad - it took him about 50 shots to put that guy down. Either Klitchko, Haye, Lewis, would have put him out cold with a decent one-two if they were getting free throws like that. Shit, a half decent light heavy would probably have knocked him out quicker.
That said, he is one scary mutha... just no point putting him in the same category as world class athletes. He's a hard man, fighting guys that wouldn't last five minutes with half decent pros.

Roy Shaw should have won. He gave him a few clouts out of the ring but never won in it out of bad luck. Lenny refused to fight him except for in the ring. You can see here how fucking hard he was. The pounding he took and the straight up and ready to go again. Shame it never happened for him.

@apollonas101 Hey, I'm not denying that Kimbo had/has potential, but he changed his fighting stance drastically when he went pro. His old stance was rock solid. Most of the vids I've seen were him fighting people who had no business in bareknuckle, even then, he get's rocked with a few solid punches in some of them, had his opponents not run out of steam, they could have easily taken him out. I would wager money if he went back to his old fighting style, he'd kick more ass.

One thing is for certain. Roy Shaw could take a punch. That first barrage from McClean and he took plenty to the head and was straight back up and McClean can hit. Roy was just too wild, more control needed. Never stood a chance fighting like a bull with his head down. McClean could just grab him round the neck and pull him forward and lay into him. I'm not questioning the toughness and grit of these ring battlers.
But why is it that there is such little available footage of these men fighting? You hear these wild tales of Lenny, Roy, Cliff Fields, etc. They fought in the 80's so why is the footage so scant?
It just seems strange that they are now looked upon as such legends, but at the time, no one even found these fights worthy enough to film?
If Lenny was so bigtime, why is there like like 4 min of total footage of him?

I've wondered the same thing and there are two main reasons. Lenny only fought about 8 times in the ring, he claims to have 4000 fights under his belt and 99.9 % of these took place on the "cobbles" or streets in the 60's 70's and early 80's in the East End of London. Whenever he was involved in a scheduled bare knuckle fight there was nobody taping them, guaranteed nobody in the crowd even owned a camera. There is other footage of him fighting, but just not on Youtube. Privately owned etc.

@JohnLoCicero They were streetfighters and unlicenced boxers fighting at a time when only the rich had video cameras and there were no camera phones.... also meaning the fights were never televised!!... To get an idea of why Roy Shaw was so highly regarded you should watch the documentary "hard bastsrds" think its here on youtube!!... But plenty more crazy harder mo-fo's out there... The tax man for one!! (cant remember his real name)
