Kingscrusher, I wonder why none of you seriously consider 5. Nc3. It's the immediate suggestion by Fritz 6 that seems to give White the edge. I mean, what can you play here?
5...Bd6 won't make any sense now since White does not intend an immediate c3, d4.
@revolution1524 Yeah.. after f6, isn't there an extra tempo now to pick up the knight(and more importantly, creating a flight square for the king)? Can someone explain this or run it through an engine? Thanks.
@ex0duzz in fact , after d4 , Qe7 ,d5 ,Nd8 (in the aforementioned variation) it is now possible for the capture of the knight (because of your activated bishop on c1) with the continuation :
hxg4 , hxg4 , Ng5 , f6 , Qxg4 , fxg5 , Bxg5 with clear advantage for white
@ex0duzz But if Bg5 is played followed by f6 the strongest continuation for white is not retreating the bishop but by playing Nh4 then if the bishop is captured (fxg5) Ng6 forking Q and R winnining the exchange with the continuation Qf6 , Nxh8 , Qh6 , hxg4 , h4 , Nd2 , Qxh8 with an even bigger advantage than the previous variation , hope this helps
@ex0duzz one more thing , if black spots the impending fork on his Q and R after Nh4 the only way out completely dissolves his attack with advantage still healthily with white after Qf7 , Bc1 , Nh6 (Nxf2 brings no decisive attack) Be2 , Ng8 (to protect the h-pawn with the rook) , Nf5 , Bc5 (you could play Bf8 but.....) , Be3 , Bxe3 , Nxe3 and white has a comfortable position while black is left undeveloped with a very unsightly King side , it seems whichever way black doesnt look good
oh and by the way I'll have to remember if my opponent is on to the trap, to use that pawn avalanched you showed. Seems like it can make for a good game, as you showed. So even if White does snuff it out, all isn't lost.
This is the first real trap I learned aside from "fools mate type stuff. And I tried it in a 15 min game, and as soon as I played ng4, my opponent typed to me in chat..."The fishing pole trap eh?". I was quite dis-heartened, as he knew not to take, and all the other concrete moves for white. I was left with a horrid position later on. Lost the game rather quickly.
This trap is about as subtle as a hammer to the head once a player knows it.
KC, I don't normally bother to post (I just watch). Jrobi (top man) had kindly shown me (utube) the basic trap. It's superb to see some sort of justification for the Knight being there when they don't "fall for it". I think I'll need to watch that a few times, and then get on a ChessWorld analyse board to experiment before I feel happy; I like the principle, but it's counter intuitive (feels like there should be refutations galore), One of your vids that gets me thinking, thanks.
the sensible variation wasnt very sensible, but finding c3, d4 plan its not guaranteed everyone will find it. Which is good for black, but for those who do play c3 + d4 i would not wanna be black..
I have run this thing for about a year now whenever I get the chance on blitz, such a great trap. I'm in the 1400-1500 range, so most people usually bite for it.
What if white takes the knight after black moves the f pawn forward blocking the queen from whites bishop? I only looked at it briefly while the video was playing, but I didn't see an immediate mating attack.
playing Ng5 in the berlin is utterly stupid it gives white a big advantage as black just loses time

Kingscrusher, after 9...f6, 10.Bg5 f6, 11Bc1, your 11...Bc5 gives a free knight on g4!!
In fact, after 9...f6, White can immediately play 10.Nh4!

After Ng4 can't white play d4 right away.

surely as soon as you play f6 your queen's path is blocked, and white is safe to take your knight on g4?

Very nice video, you can do the fishing pole in 1.d4 lines also!

There is a great Rambo-themed video by Brian Wall in which he discusses fishing poles and how a 1500 player beat a GM in a simul with one.
