reason is so that computers can measure the speed of deceleration, the strips with the coloured substance are impact sensitive. a less volatile form of contact explosive, they triggers after so much force is applied to it and is very accurate. the material changes colour after experiencing g-forces that would seriously hurt you. hope that helps. there are many other ways to do it. they mostly use electronics now but sometimes use both to be sure hope that helps

They also do side impact, rear impact and roll over tests. It's the standard crash test regardless of the car. The SLS AMG would fare better in a 140km/h crash than most small cars do at 70km/h. Testament to Mercedes Benz engineering.Check out some crash tests for the Holden Barina, or a 20 year old car crash test.

Question - can the doors be removed in an emergency? See the way its on its roof at the end - a normal car you can still open the door, but this, the door access is hindered - so is there some kind of lever to remove the door from its mounts/hinges should you land on your roof and need to get out quickly?

Mercedes has mastered the art of crumple zones and also introduced the breakaway engine mount, to help stop engine cabin intrusion.

There was an interesting list in Autocar a few weeks ago about automotive safety. They combined the results from a list of dangerous crashes and the manufacturers over an almost 40 year period. The top positioned brands have the safest cars according to this list. The results were something like this (don't have the list with me and thus don't know the points awarded):

5) Porsche

they really need to test these cars no less than 40 mph.. b/c we all know that no one does city street speed limits if theres not much traffic. 40 - 70 mph. i think thats the zone they should test cars in. then watch as the ratings go down..

In australia 80 [ercent of fatal crashes occur between 60 and 80km/h, but the thig these tests dont include is that crashes at these speeds are usually on roads with no centre devide, so the amplification of forces isnt factored in, even 60km/h head on into a car (or truck) at 60 in the other direction would be far worse then even an offset frontal impact at 80. These are the crashes that take lives
