We always have 12 dishes on the table on Badni Vecher. I didn't know about the 7 or 9 version. Also, we eat on the floor, something my grandfather always insisted on, when I was a kid. Badni Vecher is my favorite holiday of the year and sitting on the floor my favorite part. It can be hard, sometimes, to stick to traditions when living abroad, but we try. Especially with Martenichki and Sourvachki, but we try to improvise the best we can. I love our traditions.
@koukouland I guess this all these traditions are different in different regions in Bulgaria. The important is to try to preserve the traditions the way we know them and to transfer them to the future generations, no matter where we are - in Bulgaria or abroad.
@Gaedha What difference does it make whether it was cooked in a casserole or a pot or a frying pan? It's what's inside that's important. I don't know what your problem is, but if you've got nothing good to say, say nothing at all. Obviously, you know nothing about Bulgaria and Bulgarian cuisine, so instead of making fun of it, shut your mouth and learn something. If, on the other hand you are not interested to learn, that's fine too.
You are abolutly right. That is why the lamb is not on the table. The lamb with rice and green onions is one of the favorite dishes of my husband - so that's why I prepared it for after midnight. What you see on the slide show are the 9 dishes before midnight, which are the tradition.

@SubRosa999 It is 7 for 7 days in a week; or 9 for 9 months of pregnancy; or 12 for 12 months in a year!

Sorry, but in Bulgaria the lamb is traditional for Easter, not for Christmas. For Christmas we serve little porc.
