  • That was fucking awesome, man. Totally made me shit my pants.

  • Geniaal

  • Stephen is one of the most creative drummers I have seen. He does unheard things in the drums (La Sirena), and that's one of the most important things to me. Drums are like any other instrument; you have to compose..

  • iLove Stephen Perkins :)

"I got Stephen into metal especially into Iron Maiden and he grew up as musician" (c) Dave Navarro

    :)

  • this guy is amazing

  • Nice solo! But stop saying he's the best drummer because such a thing doesn't exist! Can't you say he's my favourite drummer? Is that so much to ask??? What will you say about Chad Smith, Jimmy Chamberlain or Josh Freese then??? And being the fstest drummer is ABSOLUTELY pointless by the way. A good drummer is primarily concerned about tempo, groove and creativity. I'm a drummer myself and I like all drummers but I'm just sick of these silly statements! XD Enjoy!

  • long live Stephen Perkins!!!!

  • Who cares is he is not the fastest or best drummer? He fits perfectly with Jane's Addiction or Porno for Pyros style and that's what we love from him....

  • If you're in a band, a guy like THIS is who you want behind the kit. He plays the drums as an instrument, not as a percussive two-bass-drum RPM bullshit bitch.

  • Stephen took drums past RUSH's Niel Perth by a long shot. In The Panic Channel ONe Album in the song Tea House of the Spirits he lays down a beat that I would put at the top of favorite drum rythms, just perfect in every since of the word! Does a corigraphed part with 10 repeated rolls and nails them every time! Stephen Perkins your my new favorite drummer and I'm 52! I got off of KISS a long time ago!

  • dw > anything else.

  • Total freedom and total control. Magic. I've been watching several drum solos on here tonight and Stephen is one of the only ones that I find truly impressive. He's not flailing around and losing the energy like most of the others. They're fast, they're intricate, but there's no emotion. Just show-boating.

It must feel great to be able to do this - no wonder he's such a happy guy. Bet he's a great shag too. :-)

  • Wow Wow wow wow

  • I like how he uses all the pieces of his set. A lot of drummers have shitloads of drums and cymbals and only use half of them.

  • If I did meth, this is what I'd drum like, lol. Bring on the weed -_-.

  • Wow, What a drum sound. Love DW they never fail to deliver great sounding kits.

  • i like him very much . He`s as musical a drummer as you can get. prefer this approach to the knuckle heads that can`t think about music only play hard.

  • Ha Stephen is the man! Definitely in my top 10 fave drummers!

  • he should make a "how to tune the toms"...because they simply sound amazing

  • man im a drummer but that is insane

  • Are you sure this isn't an out take from Taxi Driver...?

  • He loves Moon and his mannerisms are very similar, when he starts a solo he creeps up and attacks the drums like Moon did, he also does the look away cymbal thrash. Best I've seen live. Not recognised as the reason for Janes sound enough(by non-drummers that is). Heard him say he knew Bonham would be a solid stand up kind of guy from his drumming style, then said "you know, goong-goong-cha,,goong-goong-cha" and did the slow methodic movement, he really meant it and I loved it.

  • wau .... fantastic!!!!!!!!!

  • whats the finish he has on his set?

  • I think its birdseye maple.

  • If a human drummer ever played a muppet character, he'd play animal! Guy is going nuts, I swear his head is going to fly off his shoulders part way through.

  • I always thought minus his mohawk, Stephen Perkins looks like Bruce Willis. Love the sound of his drums and the cymbals he's using, gonna look up his set-up now, too bad Zildjian's site often has really incorrect info in that regard :(

  • goooooooooooooooood...!

  • I just remember going to one of the Janes reunion concerts in SF. I think it was called the Enit Festival. There was a drum circle in one of the rooms at Bill Graham Civic and Perkins was jamming with a bunch of drummers including one of my friends. Awesome experience.

  • perkins is the shit.

  • saw him with Janes addiction so many times - THE BEST concert playing drummer i've ever seen. Doing 3 days at Brixton Acadamy, they got to the drum solo part & he just carried it on. The rest of the band stopped & when he stopped & looked up Perry farrel asked wa she finished - he repiled yeah & they carried on with the rest of the song.............. awsome concert

  • stephen is also really good at helping you find your hotel room lol! thanks stephen xxx

  • *orgasms*

  • i remember in 6th grade i had a percussion class and our teacher brought in this dvd and we watched it..... good times

  • one of my fav in concert drummers

  • straight rockin out right there. awesome

  • that was sick-ass-solo!

  • i cant believe i havent seen this before. this is sooo goood.

  • Have you seen this new BEHIND THE PLAYER dvd that Perkins did? Its pretty sick rare photos and video, super intimate interviews, jam sessions and lessons for how to play a couple of their tracks Check it out if you havent already

  • Fuckin' legend...I wonder if he can stomach fruit yet, haha...ROCK ON BROTHER!!

  • Fuck me that was great.

  • Oh my...

  • i was gonna watch banyan perform, but perkins was sick!!! (like, ill)

  • ....ummm elij? i think you're hallucinating.

  • Hes pretty damn good but I wouldn't put him anywhere in the top 5.

  • duh - but JA and PFP wouldn't be as impressive without him behind the kit. He was made for this style.

  • DIDO to YodaVanhalen!!! Lord have mercy Stephen Perkins is gifted!

  • wow

  • I wish my garage looked like that....

  • FUCK me, he's amazing!

  • dammmm them toms sound glorious!!

  • I used to do a monthly service at this guys house ......never knew who he was, other than a nice guy wow!

  • Im glad Perkins was always a drummer with potential keeps the energy going, keeps his hi-hat foot going at all times Kudos to you Stephen!

  • this guy along with josh freese, rule, end of

  • nice friggen upload!

hands down, perkins is my favorite drummer....janes, porno & the grooves he was killer

he has a nice mohawk....check out the many mohawks my son has at my channel

  • Juanbarros88, I've heard some junk on youtube, but your comment that fusion music is "better" than rock is so utterly ridiculous that I felt stupid just typing it. If you base validity on complexity, thats your thing, but in my opinion, you fail to get the big picture. You need to read the teachings of the great Vinnie Colaiuta. I can't stand Perkins' drumming, but I LOVE his enthuiasm, and admire his spirit.

  • I think he just meant that jazz-fusion is generally played by technically more accomplished musicians than rock. Too bad that in the fusion category most music (like in all other genres) is dogshit. I just bought this album by Planet X because it had Donati on drums. Interesting to analyze, but terrible to listen to. It's like death by lethal injection. More advanced than a guillotine, but in the end you still get owned.

  • not only is he a great drummer but he is also one of the nicest guys you will ever meet

  • wow even thouh im not as good me and stephen have some things in common as far as druming goes this is only the first time ive heard him and he dont get enough credit!hes a great drummer

  • spell-check aside...

i wanted to play bass because of Mr.Perkins talents.

i consider it an honor to hear this.

  • Art... not sience and math. , but honestly, steven perkins is hard to come surpass in rythm and creativity. Keep in mind that drumming beagan as a form of expression, an art form at its core. A new method of communication even. Sure jazz/fusion is more complex but most times complexity and technicality overtake the soul behind a drummers expression, that seems more musicaly blind in my opinion. Jazz/fusion seems more like premeditated mathematics being translated into beats nothing more.

  • He's the best rock drummer ever!

  • what?

  • I meeting this guy next week

  • advice for drummers...listen to Weckl, Colaiuta, Gadd, Phillips, Chambers, Omar Hakim, etc... ITs normal for beginners to hate it and dont understand it at first, deaf people cant listen to details and some rhythms would seem odd, its not that repetitive and easy to follow in general. If you like it, well, its a big jump ahead of the 'game'. Advice to musicians, listen to Jazz/Fusion

  • I was also blind, deaf musically a year ago, As you get better you will be asking for more and more, you will be more knowledgeable with time. Rock is good but is not that exciting anymore. you'll develop your ear with time, if you get better with time. but its sad, some people stay amateur all the time, those wont accept that Fusion is more complex, better in other words. THats how the learning process is, from basic to very complex and you never stop learning. Perkins is not on a high level

  • always the same, love his work with Jane's but his solos are terrible, rock solos are very basic in comparison with Jazz Fusion, a much more complex genre, rhythmically and harmonically. Terrible solo repetitive, no feeling, few or no borrowed time, no syncopation, few dynamics, basic rhythms, no playing around with time, this is mostly single strokes around the set. You never learn with these kind of videos. Sorry I cant take it, thats why I post comments here, I should be listening to Weckl

  • he a complete mad man on the drums.love it

  • He's pretty good. not exactly my cup of tea. I like more metal and punk in my drumming.

  • ok...am i the only one who thinks he played this same thing at the Guitar Center Drum Off in '06?

  • well no shit he has to rehearse it.

    did he win ???

  • Perkins is NUTS with the drums. He's so talented!

  • great! not too fast, not too slow, it grooves! and the bass drum sounds amazing!

  • Stephen is one of my favorite drummers! He's a big influence for me as a drummer myself!

  • perfect example of fine skill and creativity. :)

  • and not just speed...

  • dude what heads is he using on those toms?? ambassadors or emperors? they've got some killer sustain and sound AMAZING!! i've got a dw kit but can't get my toms to sounds that nice. lol really great feel on the solo btw.

  • Sounds amazing because he's using a mixer indeed;)

    Nice drummin'.

  • rad

  • chad smith owns everybody

  • you need to lay off the dope, and listen to yourself, that is ridiculous.

  • chad smith's a good drummer who's skill doesn't always shine through in his songs.

but stephen perkins is better in every single way.

  • Stephen rocks. But so does Taylor Hawkins. Hawkins won the job with Alanis by disregarding the demo drummer's licks and playing his own thing. No help from Grohl back then, no help from Grohl now.

  • well ithought hanging out with you in Duluth was cool. But htat was the motherfuckin shit

  • j.bonham

    s.perkins

    a.van halen

    n.peart

  • This guy is awesome.

    I met him yesterday,

    he is so nice.

    Stephen your the best!

  • Fantastic

  • "This was Stephan latest meth binge." -

    infiniti2006

    Envy... ain't it a bitch.

  • freese is a good studio drummer, don't think he'd be very good at improving like perkins. hawkins is good, but i've heard that grohl comes up w/ the parts and taylor just plays them. perkins hands down people

  • Fantastic full strokes, really clean ^^

  • He is pretty awesum, id wudnt put him above freese and hawkins tho but above barker!

  • How could someone not give this 5 stars?

  • 1) josh freese

    2) stephen perkins

    3) joey castillo

    4) travis barker

  • for me......he is the best drummer

  • i think druming is for those crazy

  • Wow....this is so good...We met him several years ago, together with Perry Farrel, here in Holland...both are aside great, gifted, artists/musicians, also great guys...

  • If you close your eyes, you'd swear he had 8 limbs!

  • I love the drums. It's the center piece to any band. I think Perkins is the best. He is different--tasteful as hell. Im yet to hear anyone who sounds better.

  • Trust me, Perkins is not the best modern drummer. Very good yes, great flow yes, but I wouldn't put him on the level of some of the other guys.

  • Definately a part of the modern top drumming. I'm not saying he's the best or who's best. He's a great influence, though-.

  • I say he is. Maybe not the fastest but deffinately the most tastful and creative. His shit from janeps to porno grab me--totally different from anything out there.

  • Difference is virtue, BUT! There are better drummers out there, and some of them are VERY underground. I bet you haven't heard the name Martin Lopez or Dennis Röndum, have you? Those two are some of the greatest underrated drummers I know.

  • i agree, check out tim alexander's drum clinic videos on ytube, he is also very intricate, and has a jazzy ring to it. or buy the dvd, excellent..

  • Awesome. I was lucky that one of his a drum clinics was close to my town he put on a few years ago. A

  • greatest modern drummer.

meth binge? no way. perk is 420.

as for his head movements, just go with it. when you're so busy making art, it's hard to find time to be critical of other people's creations.

if you got something to pound out, make your own youtube video.

  • This was Stephan latest meth binge. Btw, moving your head around like Stephen Perkins does not make you a better drummer. I know that's what you all were thinking. Thanks for your time.

  • damn

  • Fookin fantastic! love the way you work round the toms and the cymbal action is awesome too! really great stuff!

  • AMAZING! Where did you get this?!

  • From the DVD, Stephen Perkins - "A Drummers Life".

  • @artdrumming dont forget he was also in infectious grooves
