They are robots made from hobbyists. This class of robots are called Robo-One.

These robots are mostly built from parts from a company called Kondo.

Why don't you try building one then, if they're so stupid and low-tech? Maybe even one that's autonomous, and so is an actual robot.

And after you fail spectacularly, you can give a revised assessment of the level of skill required to build a successful combat robot.

You have that right. After putting about 1500 hours in to 3 robots and 2 seasons, I still only won one match, thanks to really bad luck with all of my 3 drive systems.

great fun, but im alittle confused. Are the fights actually a competition? And if so how does it work? I ask because over the 3 days i've seen so far no one appears to have been knocked out, and the same bots keep fighting each other.

It is a competition with double elimation rules. Google robot fighting league for rules competitions etc. Its a blast!
