Those 100 dollars Chinese laptops are based on technology that is about 10 years old, using a version of Win CE that is not the most recent. They are built with not the consumer in mind, but just getting rid of old components and making some money quick. This initiative is developing the hardware to serve the needs the software will require.

Also, I'd have to disagree with you on the "old" tech because these 7 chinese laptops do NOT use old technology. For example, my 7 inch 83 dollar Chinese Laptop runs a 2009 REV of windows CE and a new designed procesor. It may seem to be old because it runs at 300mhz, but it could easilly handle overclocking to 500 mhz if I wanted to.

This project is olpc, and i think that if people start selling these and try to get each kid one computer, it will lead more to child explotations, and of course theres the whole "price will float not be 100" and then you have to think the woman at the company doing presentations and showing off facts and everything about olpc, is using a mac, what does that tell you ?, this sompany in my oppinions sound like a load of bull !!!!

With laptop selling for less than $500, this project is a waste of time. The easiest way is to collect old laptops and recycle them and ship them to the kids in those countries. Helps with the environment, and should cost less than $100. Waste of time!
I suppose the major problem with recycling an old laptop and shipping it to a developing nation would be the issue of finding a power source....OLPC's XO laptops are built to be powered by means other than electricity (e.g. by a hand pulley, solar panel)--something a recycled laptop won't be able to do...

I take it back after watching the entire vid, it has some good points like hand cranked power, and wi-fi, and special abilities that make it very interesting for $100 for a developing world project.
It's stupid, you can buy p3's and p4 laptops off ebay that are perfectly functional, except for playing the newest games for under $50. If someone were serious you could buy the entire last generation of machines, hundreds of thousands of old machines and send them to africa for less than building a new machine.
The reason they're building a machine specifically for this project is to have all the laptops virtually identical. This helps with compatibility issues when teaching, allows a custom linux based OS to be used which will work perfectly with the custom built machines. The target kids don't need all the bullshit functions that you get with pro-sumer laptops. They need something stable, easy to learn and 100% compatible with other kids in their situation.
Because of the rapid technologic advancement in the west, there throwing good stuff out ALL THE TIME! With 100€ an African village could get a computer much, MUCH better then that! That is a TOTAL RIP!!!
We have free access to the internet at libraries, books, resources, etc. You can think of MANY opportunities for children in this country to become educated. But what happens? Kids spend hours watching cable television, play video games, or generally are unsupervised. Don't like giving to those who actually don't have what we have? Think it's a corporate conspiracy? Take a good look at the room you're in now, the house you live in, and the computer you are typing. And realize how lucky you are.
"Poor" people are allowed to learn as well, lets not tell them what they need, finally they have a chance of owning computers and people are asking "why?", SAD!

This project is olpc, and i think that if people start selling these and try to get each kid one computer, it will lead more to child explotations, and of course theres the whole "price will float not be 100" and then you have to think the woman at the company doing presentations and showing off facts and everything about olpc, is using a mac, what does that tell you ?, this sompany in my oppinions sound like a load of bull !!!!

With laptop selling for less than $500, this project is a waste of time. The easiest way is to collect old laptops and recycle them and ship them to the kids in those countries. Helps with the environment, and should cost less than $100. Waste of time!

I suppose the major problem with recycling an old laptop and shipping it to a developing nation would be the issue of finding a power source....OLPC's XO laptops are built to be powered by means other than electricity (e.g. by a hand pulley, solar panel)--something a recycled laptop won't be able to do...

I take it back after watching the entire vid, it has some good points like hand cranked power, and wi-fi, and special abilities that make it very interesting for $100 for a developing world project.

It's stupid, you can buy p3's and p4 laptops off ebay that are perfectly functional, except for playing the newest games for under $50. If someone were serious you could buy the entire last generation of machines, hundreds of thousands of old machines and send them to africa for less than building a new machine.

The reason they're building a machine specifically for this project is to have all the laptops virtually identical. This helps with compatibility issues when teaching, allows a custom linux based OS to be used which will work perfectly with the custom built machines. The target kids don't need all the bullshit functions that you get with pro-sumer laptops. They need something stable, easy to learn and 100% compatible with other kids in their situation.

We have free access to the internet at libraries, books, resources, etc. You can think of MANY opportunities for children in this country to become educated. But what happens? Kids spend hours watching cable television, play video games, or generally are unsupervised. Don't like giving to those who actually don't have what we have? Think it's a corporate conspiracy? Take a good look at the room you're in now, the house you live in, and the computer you are typing. And realize how lucky you are.
