Indeed Light was a genius, and was very cunning but he became inseparable from the Death Note, and in time it consumed him, and that was his downfall.

After L dies, Light is seen standing over his body. The author parralelled this and when Light died, L was the one standing over his body, signifying that all this time, L was superior.

If you would look at the way L acted the day he died, it was soo different, and as the author portrayed L, L always has a plan. So who outsmarted who in the end? I think it's pretty clear that L showed superiority, the author made that pretty clear.

Not only that, notice the alphabetical order of K (Kira), L (L/ryuuzaki, N (Near), M (Mello): K L M N , then if L stands for Levitate and the other letters represent their names itself, then we could make: "Kira levitates near mello" which would mean their like mindedness in believing "the end justifies the means", meaning that they both were slightly evil.
