dude... i suggest you have yourself checked just for the hell of it. Rabies takes a while to infect a person. It depends on where you were bitten. The closer to your head, the faster it will infect people since rabies attacks the brain..

You're half right, rabies is a virus and like all virus' it has an incubation period, if you get treatment in this period, before the symptoms present themselves, (the treatment used to be a series of painful shots in the stomach, now there is a kinder, gentler shot that goes in the arm) you have a good chance of survival. Then again, there have been 5 people on record who got the treatment shots and still developed full blown rabies, so the best idea is still to get immunized.

Actually, once you get the symptoms, it's too late to get the vaccine. Rabies is preventable if you get the vaccine soon after you've been bit.
