First, let me say these kids did a great job with this show. My only two comments are (1) too much Cavies marching style, and (b) I would love to have seen this show performed once in white pants just to compare/contrast; it might have given moves like this more "pop". While all things evolve, a "Gail Era" alum sitting down with current members as a group might help the "SCV spiritual misalignment" that I sense has taken place. -- a mid-80s SCV lead bari
@ExBuickRacer Not sure what "spiritual misalignment" it is you speak of. I know several members personally. They marched with their hearts and souls, They LOVED this show, and performed it with enormous pride. They celebrate the memory of Gail Royer to this day, and feel honored to be members of SCV, (every bit as much as you, I think). Go SCV! Go get 'em in 2011!
@WldIrishRose As I said, I loved this show too and it was very daring to take on, especially since Star '93 cast such a long shadow with their version. As others have pointed out, there hasn't been the long time consistent SCV alum presence on the staff, especially when you compare it to BD where Wayne, Dave, et al have been together for three decades now, and Seawright's influence is still felt. Without this long time presence, things get lost in translation.
@WldIrishRose to continue...I have sponsored a "New Era" member and "back in the day" encouraged a number of former students to join DC; two went on to SCV '89 which worked out well. What set GR apart was that despite not being married, he had more kids-- 128, each year-- and loved all dearly, like a parent. He also knew how to discipline...just like a parent. I still think Rick S. would make a marvelous SCV ED, because he won't take cr**, and is a wonderful teacher...just like GR.
After reading all this, I'm noticing that this fellow "fastmantang" almost never says what actually irks him so much about the show, outside of a vague (and silly) swipe at the horn arranger for daring to write like a "wind symphony". (You mean, it's too good? Lol...)
One thing is for sure though, judging by his obsession with winning, he appears to be more of a sports fan than a listener.
Too bad. This is a fantastic piece of music, done magnificently, by one hell of a great ensemble, and
@Fastmtang, why don't YOU try to join the staff? since ya know, you're complaining about there not being enough alumni involved, causing SCV to basically suck. which i don't believe to be true.
@utsuxrooster Nobody is asking you to please people from the past. We are just asking to maintain the quality and excellence from the past. If you think you are doing this you are sorely mistaken. Like I said before, its out of your hands. If you give the VERY small world the cold shoulder because you THINK you know what is going on then you get what you deserve. You will continue to be laughed at. I hope you are happy with mediocrity because that is what you have.
@utsuxrooster and, I would just like to add that I laughed out loud when you said, "96-02 was a start of what SCV was..." I really do find that hilarious, and I am praying... PRAYING, that you are lying about marching SCV. I'll even fill out a prayer card for you when I goto church this sunday.
@Fastmtang I was looking for a year? Many many many people have told me they have marched. I also have been marching for a decent while, and still have another year. Looking past the fact that you basically insulted myself, and my friends, and told me everything I have worked for is garbage.... Why do you think Andre was a problem?
@utsuxrooster Its not your fault that SCV is not what it was. It is the fault of your staff. From top to bottom. They have no clue what SCV is and keep on failing at their mediocre effort. Andre was handed a BOS. Not really his fault but needs to realize this is drum corps, not the wind symphony. mf drum corps is not going to impact anything. Fire Denise and Key. Get rid of the Cavalier mentality. This would be a start. Work like dogs, sweat like pigs, and march like gods is lost.
ya know, I could've sworn that SCV (and drum corps in general) was about having the experience of a life time. that its about working your ass off 12+ hours a day. that its about making awesome music and doing what you love with 149 other people on the field. its about making new bonds with people from all across the country. what it is not about is the rank that is given to you by a bunch of guys in green shirts. nor trying to make every self-proclaimed expert happy. we don't cater to you.
@tbs0046 That's what people preach who can not compete in the top tier. You say that because it keeps moral up and makes you think happy thoughts about your endless rehearsing for nothing.
Gail was ALL about excellence. When you achieve excellence placement follows. This is what SCV has lacked in the past 10 years. Basically 20 except for a couple years here and their,
Getting rid of Andre and Brian is a start. Now get rid of Denise and a few others and get some real SCV instructors.
@gothdrummer7 Its called "Toast". You can find this visual from the same person last Year in the Company Front too. Vanguard made this visual also in some different years!
@merx06 96-02 was a start of what SCV was. Lately SCV is controlled by a bunch of different people with no vision of what SCV was or is. They need to get a clue and bring back the instructors that actually made a difference.
@merx06 Maybe I am not reading into your posts correctly but 03-05 had very few alumni on staff. At least in the brass and marching sections. I bet you were a drummer and in typical fashion ignored everything else around you.
I support the members. I don't support who is teaching them.
Gail would not be upset as to what I was saying. He was always in support of the truth. Gail never had 20 years of sub drum corps under his belt. He only new how to win and be a champion.
Hey everybody..... don't feed the troll! FastJERK is an idiot and incapable of appreciating the show that SCV gave us this year. No way is he an alumni..... that isn't the behavior of an SCV alum. He's bitter and sad. And ignorant. If you're a 2010 SCV member..... wow!! Your show was incredible and easily my favorite. It was so different, and therefore, so SCV. THANK YOU all, for the most challenging, intelligent, artistic show on the field!!
SCVSkeletor what years did you march? Probably after 03.
You have no clue to what SCV is. But, its not your fault. Nobody from SCV was their to teach you. Its sad that SCV of late will never hold a candle to what it used to be. Placement and heart.
Trying to be SCV and actually being SCV are two different things. SCV.... you are TRYING to be be SCV!! How many years is it going to take to figure this out?
7th place. What a joke. Kids are not being taught the way. Go back to the Cavaliers. Get that stupid stick out of the DM's hand. We used to make fun of that crap. Now SCV is doing the same stuff we made fun of.
Why did they only march 4 basses at finals?

Your right, I don't have a clue what SCV is now. That's the problem. NOBODY in SCV knows what SCV is right now.
And you are right, nothing said here will change anything. A few thoughts though.
1.Denise needs to held accountable for her poor staffing decisions. She needs to leave.
2. Bring it home SCV. All the Cavalier staff members in the world will never bring a championship!
3. Choose a show that can win a championship. Don't come into the year knowing you are going to lose.
