  • 27,000 views, 0 dislikes. Not even Youtube can touch John.

  • solo is goosebump material

  • Just brilliant, thanks so much for uploading!

  • I think someone should take that bloke off the keyboards...

  • Got to be one of the most poweful and emotional songs ever written. Brilliant.

  • The privilege is having seen him live so many times. Now he's gone. The tears roll down.

  • Songs like this make me just proud of being part of mankind. Heart on his sleeve...it's not difficult to tell between a phony and a man who means it. John I miss you.

  • is this from the old grey whistle test?

  • @3WS No it was another BBC programme called "a little night music".

  • Perfect x

  • It's the bitter/sweet emotions of life and love put to words and music so beautifully as only John and a few others could.

  • Says it all. Thanks to the big man for being us.

    Give me a call.

  • very nice--I relate to this song

  • so nice----just beautiful song---

  • heart on his sleeve , rip john

one stitch in time to save this poor

    heart from breaking.....jus say my

name, you dont have to say it loud,

ill still be true, ill be waitin jus for you - zgirl

  • This version is recorded on his CD Ain't No Saint. I'll never stop playing this man's music. After 25 years he's still the most important musician in my life. - Never to be forgotten I'm sure. RIP John. and many many thanks.

  • this is 1 of 2 songs ive ever heard in my life that touches the deepest depths of a soul, connecting in such a powerful way beyond words could ever describe, your the most pure sound ive ever known on the guitair, along with david gilmour who you played with,i hear your souls cry in your music in a magical way and your lyrics are amazing,i cry every single time...rest in peace now joihn, that hurt in your heart has finally gone...

  • SO much feeling...!

  • straight from his heart!!! hes thinking about a special someone when he sings this song....rip john you emotional , heart on your sleeve , volcano you!! ur all grace and danger!.....

  • I love this version. I remember watching this on TV at the time and tried to find a copy of it, but couldn't. Not only a fantastically powerful love song, but time travel too! Ah, Johnny Boy...

  • to all you JM fans out there: read the biography "Some people are crazy" and find out which events led to beautiful songs like this one.

  • This gets me every time I watch it or hear it (and I've been a fan since I bought 'Grace & Danger' in 1980. I can't think of any other guy who ever showed this much emotion in a song. I always have to follow-up with 'May you never' just to lighten the heart a little.

  • deep....im into soooo much music and diffo styles ....and i agree with you...even in some of the most heart wrenching blues...but john was an emotional volcano...he had to be!! when you see him at his lowest he brings out the most unexpected low_- highs if you can understand me....so much sadness with overwelming highs....you can learn so much from music if you open your ears and mind....love it!! rip john....one of the greats!!

  • Absolutely Phenomenal.

  • If such a thing exists, then possibly. I think my point kind of went over your head maybe, it was more... Ahh, just nevermind! :-)

  • This fucking song just made me cry... Again... The emotional depth of this great man just can't be put into words, the music simply speaks for itself. I hope JM and Beverley find happiness again sometime.

  • @PMN i doubt that's going to happen john would have happily gone back to beverley but it couldnt be done.

  • I know, I more meant it in a 'different' way. Nevermind!

  • @PMN the after life ? lol

  • absolutely beautiful

  • The first time i Saw John playing was about 86 when he released sapphire. I wasnt very familiar with his music at that time ,but from the first note i said what the f**** is this and i will never forget when he played Hurt in your heart screaming wild his eyes filling up, there was a wave of emotion that i will never forget . Dark, macabre even. Still the best gig i was ever at.

  • Just cried a little. Must be one of the most under-rated electric guitarists ever! The beauty from that SG!

  • @zappascotland I think that many people would rate JM as one of the best and influential guitarists of the last 40 years - even if he did sell bugger all albums :-)

  • I swear my PC is weeping. This is beyond emotion.

To paraphrase cardigan3000. This is unbe-fucking-lievable

  • That was pure heaven to my ears. I loved the man's music so much and this reminds me just why that is (not that I needed reminding.) Just wish I could stop getting choked up every time I listen to or watch him.

  • This is therapy for the soul

  • Now listen to one world

  • and small hours! :)

  • this is unbe-fucking-lievably good

  • Wow.This is the craziest most emotional song I`ve been able to get into for yonks. Cheers youtube poster. Cheers and GOD Bless John.

  • Pure emotion

  • i have stuff to do but i cant keep my eyes off John. AMAZING

  • Totally agree. It's the musicians who can truly describe the human condition and JM was one of the greatest. Pure genious. Pure emotion. All the beauty and tragedy of life. Simply brilliant.

  • simply awesome . . . so much raw emotion . .

  • I cried because I know.

  • not my thing, but somehow i always feel deeply touched.

  • this is not the blues

    this is the violets

the BIG man pushes it right to the end of the rainbow

    Love you John

  • Lovely comment, you're bang on.

  • @CCBBW really nice words

  • RIP Big man

    What a genious!

  • heaven was need a hero

  • true genius!! however sad I am,john's music always makes me feel optimistic. True believer in life,ur in my heart 4eva,love ya big man x

  • Heartbreaking, god bless you big man.

  • 'Heartfelt' and 'John Martyn' become one. beautiful. Bless JM for touching so many of our lives!

  • Very great performance I have never seen this one

Good old max middleton on the keys.

The other Thomson on bass so GOOD

  • Older, sadder wiser John Martyn - but no less beautiful.

  • the start of the solo and the bass natural harmonic gets me every time, such an outburst of emotion

  • world class missed by one & all

  • No better man....

  • a man needs to be a man

    if that is allowed

  • it's like looking at a distressed child or a wounded animal. this song breaks my heart.

  • That's possibly the most remarkable description of this video I've ever heard. It's so true. I've never seen such raw emotion come across from any musician and it reduces me to tears every time I see it. John Martyn truely was an incredible human being and I wish I could thank him for what he's given us.

  • beautiful. makes a 40 year old man cry every time.

  • Hang in there jlprlp1999, you are not alone.

  • sad loss

  • simply stunning

  • beautiful song and great performance.

when i hear this, the hurt in my heart goes away, for a little while at least.

    Never forgot about john, never.

  • I agree with what dougfinn2 said earlier - Heaven is now a better place and we are left here feeling we've lost a friend. Rest in peace John - no more hurt in your heart.

  • A remakable light extinguished...we are all the better for having him while we did. I hope his soul is finally at ease. Spencer's travels are over now.

  • A man who could share his passion to the world thru guitar & voice...will always live on and on

  • How to believe he's gone?

    The end of ... something.

    Heaven sounds much better now.

  • It Hurt his Heart every time he sung this song. My Heart hurts so. We will never forget XXXXXX

  • This is the best version of this track and it gets me every time, the guitar solo just makes the hairs on my neck stand on end. Thank you for posting. Indeed it is a hurt in my heart that he has gone. God bless you John

  • Oh man it hurts !!

  • rest easy John 5*****

  • Thanks so much for sharing this great video. A time a sadness and remembrance for us all.

    cheers

    julie
