Man, this takes me back...bout 97 I had 4 very close friends and we would absolutely fucking JAM to this song in an old 88 Mustang lol.....as soon as the heavy part came in, the car went absolutely fucking NUTS!
@fwnm8 yes but he can't play as soulfull as Steve Vai. Petrucci is good and has great technique, but he isn't as good as this guy. Steve Vai masters every style and everything on the instrument.
@guitarwiz5 I didn't really say anything bad about Petrucci, I like him as a guitarplayer, but not as a composer or overall musician like Vai. What Petrucci does is impressive ofcourse, but you have to admit...Petrucci is just a great shredder, where Vai is a great musician/composer/guitarist.
@PhilosopherOnWeed Petrucci writes like half of Dream Theater's songs! He is a writer/ shredder/ producer/whatever. I believe He and Vai are both masterful composers.
@guitarwiz5 Yeah but Dream Theaters songwriting lacks likes on the last 3 or 4 records. Steve Vai is broader when it comes to styles. He manages to play and compose in all of those styles. Petrucci is not as diverse as a composer.
@PhilosopherOnWeed I would have to disagree. Systematic Chaos and Train of Thought were great albums. Black Clouds has it's moments, but it's not as good as Chaos or Train. I do think that since Vai is solely a composer he can experiment more whereas Petrucci has to think about verses and lyrics. Vai can solo an entire five minutes if he wants to, but Petrucci has to tone it done because he's part of a band and not solo.
@guitarwiz5 I'd have to agree with Philosopher. If you have listened to Petrucci's solo album Suspended Animation (which I'm assuming you have) where he has free reign over his music, the compositions themselves are no where near as musical and artistic as Vai's. Petrucci is no doubt a great guitarist, and he is probably one of the most technically proficient rock guitarists on the planet, but Vai's compositions (and approach to guitar playing) are more musically and artistically sophisticated.
Well, that's down to opinion. If I'm gonna take all accounts in, the last really fresh DT album was 6DOIT. After that it was formulaic and predictive beyond belief.

Depends on what the tempo is. Could be 32nd's if it's Q= about 140 or 16th's if it's Q = about 280 lol. Somehow I think you're correct on the 32nd notes. :P
@RWMunchkin12788 Pretty sure the cymbal is banging out a straight quarter note pulse. Pretty sure the song is at 140-150ish, maybe 145 or so. Most of the fast licks in the solo are 16th note triplets at that tempo as far as I know.
awesome love it

Disagree there. TOT was somewhat good still, yes. But SC was pretty much awful IMHO. Beginning of DT's downfall.
dragonsagoth666 1 year ago
@dragonsagoth666 I liked SC a lot. BC&SL Is where I believed they were kind of half assing it.
