@search4diabetescure in the preamble, in order to form a more perfect union, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare. You should take a look at it sometime.
Why does the government has to sponsor or pay for "Low Income Housing"? Where does it say in the US Constitution that the government has a role and responsibility to provide for the welfare of citizens including housing? Isn't this far beyond the scope of what the Constitution provides and requires?
Aside from that, I want a Shipping Container Home, and I will pay for with my own money. Thank you very much.
@Search4diabetescure problem is due to speculation. People are both priced out fo homes and also cannot afford high rents, not too mention the horrible job market in many areas. Often housing is just not affordable for people living on our substandard minimum wage. Add children to the mix, and you have a real mess w/ affordability. Our lac of universal health care makes affordable living even more challenging. College costs are through the roof too. There is many issues leading to housing help
@Search4diabetescure Considering the gross amount of taxes we're forced to pay: Yes, these services should be provided. It's either A)Low taxes and the government goes back to its basic function or B)The current level of taxes and it provides quality services (Healthcare, free education k->College, etc). Anything less than either of those is just screwing the citizen.
This isn't new. I was recently in the carribean and have seen many homes and businesses built out of these containers. They've been doing it for over forty years.
...and last year was our biggest year yet. Container Technology and ISBU modules will continue to be the biggest Green construcion trend of the decade.
If you are considering modular or prefab home, building with recycled shipping containers is worth taking a look at.
Good resource is the Residential Shipping Container Primer website. A SHOWCASE OF SHIPPING CONTAINER HOMES AND BUILDINGDS, AND A DO IT YOURSELF (DIY) REFERENCE FOR CONVERTING RECYCLED INTERMODAL CARGO SHIPPING CONTAINERS INTO BUILDINGS AND? ARCHITECTURE.
Lots of great example buildings, details, facts, and links to other articles...
Shipping containers are steel boxes and are water proof and storm and earthquake proof. I have been reading about using unused shipping containers as shelters for years now. It is a scandal is it not happening already in places like Haiti!
Does anyone else think it's really funny that we're going to put poor people in containers? Containers for low income housing...Heck, those storage yards look ready to go as low income housing, just need some latters for the upper levels.
hmm this used to be for homeless, well we all know homeless population is rising every day. Our local walmart hosts many many cars in the lot every night with people sleeping in them. The Sheriff officers are instructed to tell people caught sleeping in their cars to go to walmart. Fitting isn't it all that Chinese merchandise inside, homeless americans outside.
What's w/ the fork truck driver running around w/ a container up in the air? He's going to have fun explaining how the truck tipped over & a container flattened the bosses car. He'll have far less fun facing the relatives of someone he killed.
Been looking into this to make a small, efficient house that I can build mostly by myself. I laugh when they use containers to build huge, multi-level homes with complex floor plans that need lots of contractors. I geuss saving money is not THAT important.
Janice Hahn is obviously not the most intelligent of people...She might want to read a little more history and economics before making blanket, politically-charged statements like sh did...
What did she say that's so bad? It sounded correct to me. There's a trade imbalance. We send them $, they send us shipping containers full of goods. Since we don't send them any goods, the shipping containers pile up here.
and of course they turn around with plans for a 3000 sq. foot home!!! one of the ways the green movement would catch on faster is if the poor were able to participate.
ive had this idea since i was a little kid like 7 or 8 yrs old. now im 17 and still plan on putting two or four together(stacked on top of each other 2 on bottom). the idea of using them to make a 2000 sq ft home in my opinion is a waste of space especially with the growing rate of the population. my plan in a year or two when i move out is to be off the grid and self sufficient
One word: Heat. Earthen materials like brick, wood, sheet rock and siding do not hold in heat like metal would. A metal skeleton might be smart, especially in hurricane or tornado-prone areas, but the concept of mostly metal walls is crazy.
If the metal was exposed, you'd be right. most of the current applications, however, cover the metal with insulation and siding on the exterior, and something akin to drywall or plaster on the interior. The net effect is a far MORE efficient space where heating and cooling are concerned, as it's more controllable.
This is an amazing concept! We'll be getting our youth construction team started on this sort of project soon. Its time to go greer, help the homeless, vets, and low income families. This is our answer.

If they are waterproof or hurricane proof they should ship them to Miss or Kansas? Maybe they can still be moble so when a storm comes you can put them on a RR car and get the hell out of the way or waterproof just close up and come back later. Like living in a sub. Or put them on end and make a great silo. plant them underground and cover thenmw with dirt and plant crops it would be like living in a hobit. go deep enough and the ground will cool the thing. No mice or ants in these homes.

No one really needs to be homeless. These homes are so cheap and the material are found all over the world. Not to mention they are all sized to international standards.
Regarding rust, mold, & cooling issues. ...both are solved with he use of low cost Ceramic Insulation paint externally. Then either the same Ceramic paint or Closed-cell sprayfoam internally. Remember, these ISBU were designed for use on and near the ocean so rust is seldom an issue and easily addressed. ...heat? The Ceramic insulation is widely used externally even for some shipments. It virtually stops the heat.

A shipping container used for home, office, or storage construction is called an ISBU.
Of course this is inspiring, but according to qualified Members of the ISBU Association:
-The cost you see here is outrageous
-Reefer containers should not be used for home construction. ...too many problems.
This has become a huge trend in the U.S. and globally and there are now many other more successful projects out there than this one.
