I've said this before...Les is a versitile bassist and while he has amazing chops, he's a bassist. I've played in everything from classical music, jazz to prog metal...and I change my bass playing quite a bit to fit the genre I'm in...its part of the role of any good musician.
its not supposed to match the original its just a different interpretation and les isnt the best bassist but he gets a cool slap sound and this is a mad video.
I still say that Les and Cliff are apple and oranges. Cliff can't slap like Les if his life depended on it but Les can't play solos the way Cliff does. Both Les and Cliff are unique in their own way, let's just leave it there.
To all the Cliff haters posting here... Know that when you're comparing your chosen bassist to Cliff, that he died in his early 20s. While many of the bassist's(Claypool, Wooten, Clark) you're using to compare him to are all much older now and have had time to perfect their craft.
Yes, there's many very good bassists out there, technically "better" than Cliff, But you'd be hard pressed to find a more influential and pioneering bassist to thrash if not most metal. Imagine Cliff nowadays.
See above...someone was at a recent concert Les was complementing someone wearing a "primus sucks" shirt. Thats proof. Until there is a press release or official blog, its something they have to live with...
i always used to look on the internet for the greatest bands, guitarist, bassists, drummers ect on the internet and its one of those things that u can't be told because if u want to believe that nick jonas is the greatest guitarist of all time instead of hendrix then so be it i say. i honestly think that michael balzary is the best bassist of all time (flea) but that doesnt mean that he is.
Interesting, I was just looking at a list of the 100 greatest rock bands. They have a bunch of different categories such as fundamental skill, where primus was rated #12. Really interesting, out of all the rock bands ever, there are only 11 with more talent than primus
yeah metallica would have held this guy back he wouldnt be allowed to do his thing in any of their shit... they'd just overlay all their shit over him so its like u cant even notice him... glad les knew this and didnt join them it would have been a bad career choice... rock on les ur still beastly
I've always wondered if people realized that Metallica decided not to let Les Claypool join and not the other way around. The reason why? They said he was too good for their band.
...I find it funny when people say bands suck. When those people aren't on the road touring and selling albums and just post negative comments on youtube.
Les didn't enter Metallica because Metallica wants a bass guitar in the band but just for the background, to give more power to the rythm guitar and keep the rythm, Primus is all about Les, the most highlighting sound is the bass one, and Metallica thought that they would have downed Les Claypool by letting him enter Metallica, that's good, because Primus is an amazing band and so is Metallica, Newsted and Trujillo fitted better in the band.

Nice...you say something, say there is an interview then use expletives to try drive home your point. If YOU say something, YOU need to prove it, simple as that. I already told you, it was in a TV interview, a TV interview that I can't find anywhere because it's from so freakin' long ago, and since you wont take my word on it, go fuck yourself.

I´m sure they are sick of hearing that since it´s so old and used. If they even are bothered to care about it. And why should anyone care as they suck?
I was at the (so far) last primus show in golden gate park and les didnt mind at all when people were saying "primus sucks". In fact, he was in great spirits as was the rest of the band. Cliff was amazing, he just didn't get the time to show to the world how good he was, but with just 24 years and hundreds of Anesthesias I can say that Cliff wasn't the third... was the second best, and if he were still alive, he will be the first! with more than 20 years playing bass I'm sure that Cliff would have kicked Les' ass, but that won't happen because he died, so bad...
sorry mate, Burton would never be anywhere near as good as les claypool is today, not wanting to speak ill of the man because sadly he is dead but I always saw Burton as more of a guitarist with a bass in his hands
No...Cliff wasn't that good. It jsut really get's on my nerves when people say he is. I mean, that's like saying Kurt Cobain would be the greatest guitar player alive. They were both of average talent and just happened to become cult figures because of thier death.
You listen to Cliff's solos, then Stanley Clarkes and tell me that Cliff was ANYWHERE near that, and you're fucking crazy.
xenotoxette: There's quite a bit more than dying to Cobain's and Burton's popularity. Cobain was a great songwriter who wrote within his guitar skills. Burton was a skilled and original metal bassist. 'Orion' has some great bass playing that perfectly compliments the other instruments. I'm going to guess that you're about 13-16 years old and play bass. The young are quickest to assume they have knowledge. Also, comparing Stanley Clarke to Cliff Burton makes no sense.
dude, how bout you tell stanly clarke to try and play anesthesia and make it sound as awesome as cliff then? no it wouldnt work cus cliff started the revolution of lead bass and using all the sweet efects and stuff peopl say hes so good cus hes a music genius for one, and cus his solos sound awesome and he sure knows how to put music together and when i listen to stuff like stanley clarke jazz crap im like wow i find no good musical value.
I agree, Cliff played fast riffs through distortion. It's certainly nothing that impressed me. I suppose at the time it was impressive. Though, some don't like to move forward with the times.
i say you're fucking crazy because you're comparing two COMPLETELY different styles. cliff was pure metal; loads of distortion and shredding. stanley clarke is a completely different genre and style
Cliff had a tremendous left-hand technique that rivals many lead guitarists. Also, his use of effects were very creative. What's the obsession with comparing one's heroes to another? They both are great bass players.
I would have to agree after listening to live recordings of Cliff. His playing was inaccurate and off tempo at times. That's probably why he liked to use a lot of distortion. I would consider him a good but not skilled player like Les and many others.
Quote : You listen to Cliff's solos, then Stanley Clarkes and tell me that Cliff was ANYWHERE near that, and you're fucking crazy.
1. They became cult because of their feeling, not at all because of their deaths.
2. Are you kidding? You can't compare metal bass player to a jazz bass player...
of course, S.Clarke,V.Wooten,M.Miller etc. are the best bass players i've ever heard, as for the TECHNIQUE!, But you hardly find someone with that feeling and music as Cliff (Kurt) made.
Kurt wasnt average he knew like 3 chords but his music is and allways will be great....i agree with cliff maybe there are alot better bassists out there but dont use Kurt...peace out
Hold there dont say Cliff is an avarage bass player hes one of the best maybe not as good as this guy but hes not an avarage player, But you can say what you want about Kurt Cobain's guitar skills because he isnt a talented player.
hahaha....cliff is mainly recognized for how different he was buddie....we all know that he wasnt the BEST bass player...there will NEVER be a BEST....but cliff is one of the greatest....i mean come on...ppl like les claypool and victor wooten all sound the same....nothing like cliff...ya kno? not tryin to be a dick, nor am i dissin anyone...=)
Um...les claypool sounds like victor wooten? When was the last time you saw Victor play an upright...never! How about a bass with 6 strings or no frets or with a wammy bar? Les has chops but his tone and approach is way different than Wooten. The fact you said that means you don't really listen to either of them all that much...
BULLSHIT! Cliff WAS good. Was he the best? No. But...his style was awesome, AND his solos were awesome. Listen to Anesthesia and tell me that he's "not that good".
listen to pulling teeth by metallica pure bass solo can cliff and always will be intense sure he wasnt as good as claypool but man he solo u dont see primus playing stuff like pulling teeth and kurt was an average guitarest who got alot of media
well cliff was pretty good as far as metal shredding goes, just like kurt was good at... uhh, yelling?
ok to be fair kurt was a decent songwriter and he could have gone further with that. cliff could've become a metal bass shredder god but that's about it.
are you fuckin' retarded or something? DON'T YOU EVER MENTION Cobain and Burton in the same comment. Ok maybe cliff isn't that godlike after all but can't be compared to Cobain atleast Cliff had skill.
Les would steal all the attention from kirk hammett and james hetfield they would never let him take that away from them. believe me i love mettalica but have les funk out like that omg maybe they would let him jam for one show or 2 but never let him in as the new bassist.
i heard they didnt let him in cuz he "wasn't right for the band". which makes sense. his style is totally different from metallica.. lol he's too good for them, anyway =P
2) Hetfield said he was too good, but Lars (fag) said that Les wasn't used to playing that style. Kirk would've been biased if he said anything, Les and Kirk grew up together in High School.
I've said this before...Les is a versitile bassist and while he has amazing chops, he's a bassist. I've played in everything from classical music, jazz to prog metal...and I change my bass playing quite a bit to fit the genre I'm in...its part of the role of any good musician.

No...Cliff wasn't that good. It jsut really get's on my nerves when people say he is. I mean, that's like saying Kurt Cobain would be the greatest guitar player alive. They were both of average talent and just happened to become cult figures because of thier death.
You listen to Cliff's solos, then Stanley Clarkes and tell me that Cliff was ANYWHERE near that, and you're fucking crazy.
xenotoxette 3 years ago 62
Yes Cliff is near that and not to mention he wrote alot of metallicas songs. I mean, sure he wasnt the best, but he is good.

xenotoxette: There's quite a bit more than dying to Cobain's and Burton's popularity. Also, comparing Stanley Clarke to Cliff Burton makes no sense.
volumeguy 3 years ago
I agree that Cliff was nowhere near Stanley Clarke. But as far as rock music, there is a VERY short list of people to this day who play rock as well.

Cliff was amazing...they're two different genres so you can't really compare.
Cliff Burton was one of the most innovative Metal bassists going

dude, how bout you tell stanly clarke to try and play anesthesia and make it sound as awesome as cliff then? no it wouldnt work cus cliff started the revolution of lead bass and using all the sweet efects and stuff peopl say hes so good cus hes a music genius for one, and cus his solos sound awesome and he sure knows how to put music together and when i listen to stuff like stanley clarke jazz crap im like wow i find no good musical value.

Cliff was ok but then again he was charismatic
assassin2811 3 years ago
I agree, Cliff played fast riffs through distortion. It's certainly nothing that impressed me. I suppose at the time it was impressive. Though, some don't like to move forward with the times.
tfinder 3 years ago
i say you're fucking crazy because you're comparing two COMPLETELY different styles. cliff was pure metal; loads of distortion and shredding. stanley clarke is a completely different genre and style
tyleral45 3 years ago
Cliff had a tremendous left-hand technique that rivals many lead guitarists. Also, his use of effects were very creative. What's the obsession with comparing one's heroes to another? They both are great bass players.

BUT CLIFF WAS THE BEST!!!!!!!
sk8r2714 3 years ago
i agree.
nEishhh 3 years ago
I would have to agree after listening to live recordings of Cliff. His playing was inaccurate and off tempo at times. That's probably why he liked to use a lot of distortion. I would consider him a good but not skilled player like Les and many others.

45firebird45 3 years ago
Kurt wasnt average he knew like 3 chords but his music is and allways will be great....i agree with cliff maybe there are alot better bassists out there but dont use Kurt...peace out
ste4test 3 years ago 3
Hold there dont say Cliff is an avarage bass player hes one of the best maybe not as good as this guy but hes not an avarage player, But you can say what you want about Kurt Cobain's guitar skills because he isnt a talented player.
LoveStarOcean 3 years ago
Looks like I'm crazy. Some of the best bass players just play. They don't all have to be Geddy Lee or Les Claypool.

hahaha....cliff is mainly recognized for how different he was buddie....we all know that he wasnt the BEST bass player...there will NEVER be a BEST....but cliff is one of the greatest....i mean come on...ppl like les claypool and victor wooten all sound the same....nothing like cliff...ya kno? not tryin to be a dick, nor am i dissin anyone...=)
white0nerdy 3 years ago
Um...les claypool sounds like victor wooten? When was the last time you saw Victor play an upright...never! How about a bass with 6 strings or no frets or with a wammy bar? Les has chops but his tone and approach is way different than Wooten. The fact you said that means you don't really listen to either of them all that much...

the difference with cliff was that he pushed Metallica to go somewhere after dave mustaines departure and the moving of the band.
1unar3clipse 3 years ago 2
BULLSHIT! Cliff WAS good. Was he the best? No. But...his style was awesome, AND his solos were awesome. Listen to Anesthesia and tell me that he's "not that good".
abaddon5 3 years ago 10
Yeah Cliff was a damn good player, but not the greatest.... But both Cliff and Kurt were some of the greatest musicians.

listen to pulling teeth by metallica pure bass solo can cliff and always will be intense sure he wasnt as good as claypool but man he solo u dont see primus playing stuff like pulling teeth and kurt was an average guitarest who got alot of media

Right on
mookiefat5 3 years ago 400
well cliff was pretty good as far as metal shredding goes, just like kurt was good at... uhh, yelling?
ok to be fair kurt was a decent songwriter and he could have gone further with that. cliff could've become a metal bass shredder god but that's about it.
merdufer 3 years ago
are you fuckin' retarded or something? DON'T YOU EVER MENTION Cobain and Burton in the same comment. Ok maybe cliff isn't that godlike after all but can't be compared to Cobain atleast Cliff had skill.

What a beast!
That's some of the craziest bass I've ever heard.
The only person I can think of that comes close is Geddy Lee.

this is kinda funny becuase Les tried out for mettalica when Cliff left but they didnt let him in because they thought he was to good lol.
louisianabassist 3 years ago 2
Les would steal all the attention from kirk hammett and james hetfield they would never let him take that away from them. believe me i love mettalica but have les funk out like that omg maybe they would let him jam for one show or 2 but never let him in as the new bassist.
fishfan67 3 years ago
i heard they didnt let him in cuz he "wasn't right for the band". which makes sense. his style is totally different from metallica.. lol he's too good for them, anyway =P
xloudermusicpleasex 3 years ago
yo cliff didnt leave metallica. he got his head smashed by a tour bus.
Dudeman724 3 years ago
1) Cilff died (R.I.P. Cliff)
2) Hetfield said he was too good, but Lars (fag) said that Les wasn't used to playing that style. Kirk would've been biased if he said anything, Les and Kirk grew up together in High School.
t3hn00bn355 3 years ago
I am so glad Les didn't play for Metallica. The world is a better place with Primus in it.
