  • Muah-ha-haaaa! Failure! I have now absconded with your secrets Hughes!!!!!!!!!!! ;D

  • Yeah I can't draw from memory. Need to look at something otherwise its like my drawing is 2nd grade-no offense to 2nd graders

  • i have never used those structures nor pencil. im asking if he could do it with a pen or sharpie? not a challenge, he's better then me, in structures, but i wanted to see if anyone from art institute ever try to go over the rules of pencil strategy?

  • @3:12 the way he drew that hand just blew my mind

  • in artistic slang "fucking awesome factor" is called practice )))

  • hes got that....what do you call it..... hmm FUCKING AWESOME factor in him!!!

  • what kind of pencil is that??? i've been looking for that pencil man

  • @diusx Looks like a bog standard mechanical pencil that you can find in any decent stationary shop. Really though, any pencil or pen is fine and you should just use what you're comfortable with - the end result is all that matters.

  • @NeecHMonkeY yo i just bought that pen and my drawings are way better XD its called a lead holder and i got it from amazon the amazon product name is Staedtler Mars 780 Technical Mechanical Pencil, 0.2mm. 780BK and it comes with a 2h grade pencil lead price USD $9.29 plus shipping and handling it came out to be an extra 10 cents lol but i personally suggest you also buy a 4h from turquoise like adam hughes has its beast

  • @diusx Thanks. :) I've already got one that I'm happy with and use it for my initial sketches before converting them to digital.

  • @NeecHMonkeY do you have a deviant art profile???

  • @diusx I do: apneicmonkey. deviantart. com (without the spaces) :)

  • @diusx he's using a lead holder :)

  • Better than porn.

  • For me, it's really helpful to see how BIG the paper is! I'm trying to get out of the 8.5 x 11 phase.... That's just too small anymore :P

  • @MaryOfClaire

Give that hand freedom with bigger paper!

  • I recently bought the COVER RUN, adam hughes art book, other than the fact that its oversized and Adam´s art can be appreciated more in this edition, i find the most interesting aspect to be the commentary for each cover, the preliminaries, the original inks and how he explains his process and is honest about so many things.

I really recommend it for any Adam Hughes fan or any aspiring artist like myself. Its an amazing piece.

  • it must feel so good to be able to draw from memory...

  • /watch?v=38UVKQys6Bk

  • Thats a bad ass pencil thing he's using. & what is that like black wipe thing he's using to get rid of the lighter lead? This guy is pretty damn good but he draws his womens hips like teenage boys... thats my only gripe with this artist.

  • @infectiousmonkey the pencil he is using is called a lead holder or clutch pencil basically a thick lead pencil and his "rag" is actually a kneaded eraser most artist like them because they erase very well and dont leave eraser trash so no need to sweep across the art potentially smudging lines and his char is foreshortened so the hips would look smaller cause of the angle and distance but i agree he does tend to make narrower hips but i dnt mind it at all.

  • omg....noo!!!not the marker!!!!

  • He is absoulutly one of my favorite comic artists ! I`m wondering who he is drawing .

  • wat pencils is he useing??

  • What the instrument in his hand? It is a rapidograph or a some kind of mechanical pencil?

  • @SirConstantineGrey a lead holder :) they're great for doing varied lines that a mechanical pencil cannot achieve, and there are various hardnesses for the leads, ranging from 4B to 5H, at least the ones I've found. They are expensive pencils though, one I have is 13 bucks, but it is a great pencil to use.

  • @carboxylheron thank you. I'll try to find it =)

  • @SirConstantineGrey You're welcome :) You can find these pencils at most art stores. Be sure to pick up a lead pointer as well, the special sharpener for these pencils.

  • @carboxylheron Thanx, I don't know if there is such pencils in town where I live. I'll try to figure it out. But now I'm just studying how to draw, and it is not simple, I don't know what I'm doing wrong)) P.S. sorry for my lame English.

  • Omg when he took out that eraser and just went over it all my face was like, "D8"

  • These ppl talking on the back is annoying: Mute ON.

  • Hey I have that same exact pencil...Mine doesn't make awesome lines like his does. Must be broken.

  • Very cool work on the hand :)

  • that hand...that HANNDDD

  • Oh my god, I try to aspire to your greatness.

  • It looks like Bulleteer, a female superhero in the DC Comics Universe..

  • i should be sitting at that table. DRAWING! youll see! youll all see!!! im uploading storyboard animations soon! very soon! ill make a movie to get into the damn art world if i have to...

  • whoa incredible how fast he drwas it

  • I like how he did the hand. does anyone know what sort of pencil is that ?

  • 4:38 same face I make when sniffing a sharpie

  • duh hes using a lead holder

  • How much does Adam Hughes charge for a sketch? I ask because I see people selling his sketches on ebay for 1000's of dollars.

  • Adam Hughes, I love you

  • we all have that kind of talent we just have to unlock it, with plenty of practice, and somebody tell that woman in the background to keep her mouth shut while he is doing this:-)

  • wow... he makes it look so easy! I wish i had that kind of talent...

  • Really amazing! Love how guys with his experience just know what the proportions, pose and perspective should look like then draw it, without planning where vanishing points or horizon should be, they just know. I still use Loomis manuals a lot. All us noobs can do is practice, observe and repeat like a bizilion times.

  • He's like a magician!

  • i cant get tired of watching this videos

  • wow amazing drawing thanks for the help. what kind of pencil are you using? jw love the video. ;3

  • @Jeffa101 hes usin a clutch pencil they come in many sizes like a pigment liner hes a .1 personally i use a .3 but that might be why i suck and adam hughes kicks ass

  • Adam hughes is my favorite artist of all time

  • hes so good at persepectives......i gotta start back practicing or else i wont be able to draw a stickman....

  • I think he still wishes he was Steve Rude

  • Adam is awesome,,he's great at creating sketches.

  • adam hughes is excellent! AH!

  • Nice.

  • Is this their job? Im not really sure what its all about , I don't know much about this stuff, yet

  • Hes a comic book artist. This is probably some convention or something similar

  • really creative !

  • He erased because he had the basic proportions he wanted. The erase left the faint image to work over.

  • ur art is awesome. got any tips for my drawing tutorial?

  • Here's my advice: don't ask for advice, just keep drawing and don't stop.

  • shityeh, best way is to teach yourself hey

  • best advice :)

  • @LafinJack Keep on drawing is good advice, but asking for advice is not only useful, but really important to learn... And most important LEARN THE BASICS! Too much people want to go directly at the rendering phase skipping the study phase, the construction, the sketch an the refining phases as well... Drawing it's all about practice, practice and more practice (and a bit of love ;) )

  • @LafinJack actually depends of who are giving you advices. I have acquitances who are classic painters and use to give me a lot of good tips and I usually do the same to other artists...the problem with hearing advices is "you must be prepared to hear" with your ego controled...

  • @LafinJack my teacher says that...

  • @LafinJack well said!

  • Comment removed

  • @LafinJack OMG no sarcasm, that's the best advice I've ever heard/read/whatever! I'll tell that to everyone from now on :D

  • I love when you see he has a decent sketch that you think hes going to work on, and then he just erases it all.

  • Awesome!

  • he is the man. no doubt

  • he really knows how to draw.. XD

  • @Agito0MaxY orly?

  • A true master, top of the mother fuckin food chain. Let's see David (the hack) Mack do a video like this, now that would be good for a fucking laugh!!! unless of course he includes the photograph and light box, then he can do wonders LOL.

  • many artist use light boxes especially to go from layout to finished piece.

  • wow. he doesnt stop to think. he just does it and it forms all of a sudden. 0_o

  • when u have as much practice as him it becomes easy

  • pretty amazing

  • he is a machine!

  • How on earth can you work with so much noise around you!?!?

    amazing

  • i know i usually get pissed...

thats why i work at nights =/ sucks to loose sleep

  • 4:35 No, don't sniff it O_o

  • Oh I know! I was like WHAT THE FUCK

  • Great video, fun to see how AH puts it down.

  • its amazing how he does it so effortlessly. God i wish i could draw like that. I draw good, but no where near that good. I've been trying to get better, but im not sure how. My main problem is that my drawings are missing a lot of life and action.

  • do you know about the action linas well as the , e?aka the gesture line?if not then that could be why you're pics aren't getting that lifelike quality to it as well as the expressions on the characters help quite a bit

  • If you really learn human anatomy it becomes much easier to add drama because you can confidently place your characters in dramatic poses. I highly recommend "the structure of man" tutorials as they helped me really push my own work to the next level. Also use thumbnail sketches to develop an idea first as it is much easier to draw on a small scale. The main thing is practice, you have to spend many hours working to really improve.

  • Anyone know what drawing utensils he is using?

  • Looks like charcoal in a special holder and a kneaded eraser.

  • it's a lead holder with a graphite stick, probably a 2h or 4h. most comic artists use this for finished pages, even if mechanical pencils are the norm for sketching.

  • According to a later video of this set, I think he prefers softer graphite than that, 2B or 4B was what he said, if I remember correctly.

  • He uses 4B, and 2b at home in atlanta due to humidity.

  • at Baltimore comic con 08 he used a 4-b to 6-b thats what ive seen him use

  • I understand what he is doing, I like his style

but when I want to draw my own draws using some of his technics my final work ends...being crappy.

Trying to COPY an style of another author its hard.

I'll keep practicing my own style until I can draw as agood as him

and that's gonna be hard coz this man rocks

  • thats the right attitude, working hard is the only way.

  • I needed to see someone drawing a cleaner rough like that...Im gonna try the way he did tis rough now hehe

  • I have also been studying Adams technique and approach to roughing out the figure. I can definitely see a difference in my drawings especially the face. I Hope you have the same results.

  • i cant begin to comprehend how he did that hand so quickly...its amazing

  • Hey Archonxr3 can draw too!!!

  • i can draw too.

  • wow..I should use that erasing technique

  • Step 1, erase good looking sketch

    Step 2, KABAM!

Step 3, you are a god. you have created life.

  • BRRRRRAAAVO MAESTRO!!!!!!!!

  • i goddamn love adam hughes, he is a big inspiration to me. i love the way he has the shape of the hand in his mind already, andhe seems to draw s imple odd loooking shape, then with a few flourushes turns it in to a fist..excellent!

  • Yea pretty impressive huh? lol... Hands are probably one of the hardest things to draw accurately imo. Always impressed/inspired when a pro like him makes it look easy lol.

  • I was with you until you had to post a immature attack on a very genuine person.

  • give me facts..if itis a genuine complaint ill apologise.

  • The man does not eat like a pig (he has been a guest at many of our MCBA cons) and he does NOT aim to be a fat ass (as you put it.)

A mature person who claims to be a fan, would not deliver such a immature comment. Yes, you do owe an apology to him.

  • chillax- i hereby apologise to adam hughes! he is not a fat ass and doesnt eat like a pig.

i love his work on wonder woman, and ghost.also x-men.

    =)

  • what a pussy!

  • dude, you shoudnt talk about your mom like that.

  • I love his stuff.

  • It's great work but he really charges an arm and a leg for any commissions, His prices really go up when he's at Comic-Con Int,

At most other comic conventions around the country he'll take off maybe a hundred dollars

or so, Ah well it's only money

and he is after all a superstar.

  • Actually...the female character is flying...stretching the arm in the air in front of her face. Anyone who has knowledge of human anatomy should know that the muscles in the chest would cause the breasts to stay resonably level...and for the breast that is on the same side as the arm being raised, to raise upward with the arm. That's not what it is occuring in the drawing. Thankfully, I do not draw professionally...he does - which is surely not an excuse for his lack of anatomy.

  • yea i realized that 2 ur right,..every 1 makes mistakes tho so even the best of artist still need 2 pratice

  • Having a knowledge of anatomy and drawing it are two very different things. Some of the best artists in the world can get it wrong sometimes because anatomy of the human body is still incredibly hard to recreate perefectly in a picture.

  • shes leaning forward thats why her breast are low!! =/

like brickplaster said, he gets paid, and you suck dick

  • Wow he draws comics and gets paid and you don't hmmmmmmmmmmmmm. And is DARN good too.

  • dude shut up!

  • Jealousy, anyone? I do believe we have a child on our hands.

  • ... by which I mean Spaceisneat of course.

  • shut the fuck up!!!

  • Let's see if you can do it better, then

  • For those so worried about what pencil he uses, how hard is it or what feet he steps first when he wakes up, remember:

The secret is the hand that weilds the sword, not the sword itself. If you want to be fine artists, work, work, work.

  • @Forlond completely agree...but everyone has a "favorite instrument" is a kind of pshycologial save system....and hughes too!^^

  • @Forlond heard that on naruto btw

  • @pgf95 I heard it 30 years before in Conan, by John Millius. btw

  • Is there any possibility to release this as a higher resolution, with all parts condensed into one big video? AND... with all the bits that were edited out?

    Would you please? Pretty please?

  • the pencil is a lead pointer/clutch pencil. just go to a crafts store and buy one. 2h lead/hb lead

  • As a artist, Hughes excels. As a person, he's a prick.

  • happens often. many take selfimporvement the wrong way and it becomes a competition.

  • What kind of pencil is that and where can I get one! omg....

  • drawing the female torso is jus plain hard...seeing a master demonstrate his expertise was great referance. thanks very much for uploading this!

  • It's good to know that I pretty much know how to do what he does, that I do the same thing, only in my own unique style. He's got such a sweet hand with anatomy.

  • Wow, MAN! Another one of the GREATS IN ACTION! I'v never been lucky enough to see him at work so thanx for sharin the video.

    He's quite funny.

  • i wish i could draw like that.

  • I love Adam Hughes' work-- his style and skill are amazing. But the cherry on top is his sense of humor, which comes through in everything he draws. Even his coffee cups seem to be in the middle of telling you a joke, somehow.

  • aaah oke thx dude keep going to the good work :D

  • yea what for pencil is that plz tell

  • It's a 2mm lead holder. You can buy them from Staples. They're pretty good, but the lead is very expensive. Look in the drafting section. The one I have is a blue Staedler.

  • same. i got a 2 pack of led for 2 bucks, i guess that is expensive but its fat led

  • can any one tell me what kind of pencil is that ?

  • Now I can steal your secrets!!

  • im a comic book illustrator in local and he is one of the artists that really really inpspires me....thanks for posting this video man...

  • WOW he's really familiar with the muscle structure!

    GJ!

  • Wow! Beautiful :)

  • sucks

  • can YOU draw any better?

  • I know I can't,

I've tried before to trace Jack Kirbys pencils just

to see if I could ever be up there with Joe Sinnot or Mike Royer as a Kirby inker Just as an experiment, God I'm glad I shredded that mess of mine.

  • Yeah, starting out with a sketch of the figure is apparently the way to go..

that said, I hate AH.. hes too good! makes me wanna give up!

  • what kind of pencil does he use at the veery start, the red one. name or where i can get one?

  • wow, I usually start with the face, but I think I should start sketching the form out before detailing everything. Thanks for a different technic!

  • Its always best to start out first with a sketch/gesture, it just gives the overall structure rhythm, and thats what makes awesome drawing. Adam Hughes, Jim Lee, James Jean, the best always start off that way.

  • u suck!

  • ...and so do you.

  • What is that pen that he is using to ink it the outer lines of the drawing? thanks

  • Dude I never saw AH before and when I saw him I was

like, dude he's old! He's a legend. And a damn good boob artist too, lol.

  • He is a GOD !!!

  • wow thats what real practice gives you. Really impressive

  • How do you even draw half that good.

  • I love watching this guy sketch, it's truly amazing. Thanks so much for sharing!

  • LOL.. I love the ending to this segment.

  • LOL yep made me laugh too :D

  • Damn this guy is good. Thanks for sharing the series.
