I love this song! Haven't heard it for years. Now i have a kitten named DarkStar so i figured.... time to hear 'this' Dark Star again. Absolutely lovely post, thank you so much
When you add up all the different combinations of these guys and all the different music the've produced over the years and that they are still doing it, they are legends.
This is more high energy but is missing verses and the Fender Rhodes keyboard solo of the album version. Plus, the album version does seem to capture the laid back attitude of the time. I really like both versions, each for its own strong points.
@hoestreicher It really totally does. They are almost practically like 2 different songs from one each other. It is really interesting.
The same, I'd definitely say, could be said about CSNY's version of "Woodstock", which totally and completely blows Joni Mitchell's version of "Woodstock", which is the original written and performed/recorded version of it.
My favorite band in high school and college. They still sound absolutely amazing even to this day. I never related to their social or political positions, and even less today, but there is no denying their genius or their heart. Brilliant music.
It makes most of today's music pale in comparison.
Powerful delivery of the awesome minor chord progression...good arrangement... high energy... and crackin' bass line... but missing the rest of the verses and the INCREDIBLE Fender Rhodes solo in the album version.
After seeing this clip, I bought "Daylight Again." I hate to see these guys getting older....still very talented! I have seen them in concert 2 times-MOVING!!
I had a record that was a live Stills solo album project... danged if I didn't lose it when I went in to the military. Anyway, he did a version of "Crossroads" on acoustic that was mind-blowing. Just him and the guitar. I loved Jimi, Blackmore, Page and the others, like everybody did, but after hearing that, I was converted. Do yourself a big favor and FIND THAT RECORD! wow....
My favorite is probably "Black Queen" on his first solo album. Just Stephen, his guitar, a mic, and some Jose Cuervo. I've heard that recording at least 1,000 times and it still seems fresh.
I dig Crosby's first solo album a lot too. I think it was self-titled. Cover has him at the helm of his beloved sailboat. I gotta get that one again. Back when I was in the navy and out at sea, I'd go sit out on the fantail of the ship, put that tape in my Walkman and watch the sea do it's thing (dates me quite a bit, huh? lol). Got a lot of milage out of that tape.
A great video though I have been told that Graham Nash carried a very heavy burden throughout that whole tour worrying about David Crosby. You gotta love how Nash keeps things all together....
He could be optimistic because Crosby was there, on his feet, suffering thru one of many attempts at detox. Crosby was physically sick during this concert, but
I don't care for this version too much, it needed less electric guitar in the mix and more clean acoustic like the original, the bass playing was a jumbled mess and didn't groove at all.
I prefer the original to make it short.... its a great song from a great band. Good to see them still performing and vocally sounding good however.

This is not the Dead song. Stills is given credit on CSN. Hunter/Garcia are credited with their version. Different song, listen, its on YT

Stephen Stills with a Grateful Dead number. He gave 100%+ to this concert, just because Crosby was below par. Nash made the same effort.

Is there ANYONE who is cooler than Stephen Stills? HE IS THE EPITOME OF COOL! WOW! Keep on rollin', CS&N!!!!!

Stills' spinaround move playin the riff followed by his moonwalk and dive for the mike is the funniest thing ever!

Love the way he moves: Stills was so much more likeable than he usually tried to be. A real porcupine, but talented as hell.
