All this talk about dogs killing cats, etc. The focus in much of this discussion has been on banning (killing) Pit Bulls but what about other animals? I had a tomcat go after baby kittens when it was hungry, actually eating them. In fact it brought 1/2 of a kitten it was eating on and left it on my damn porch. Mistakes happen. This wasn't one you intended or wanted, so I hope you can forgive yourself. A lot of dogs of -all- breeds (including golden retrievers) have a prey drive and can't necessarily be trusted with baby animals, cats and so on. Many can, but dogs are carnivores and predators at the end of the day.
Hey you shouldn't beat yourself up too much about it. Animals are animals and Pitts aren't enormously more aggressive than other dogs, it's just most people don't know how to handle them. Don't blame yourself or the dog for what happened because as sad as that is to humans it's natural to them. At least you still have the white kitten and this still shows that Pitts are capable of being gentle. one time in my neiborhood, there was a kitten stuck in a tree and some of the neibors tryed to get it down. There was a dog there too. Finaly we got it to jump down to us and while it was airborne the dog snached it and was swinging it around while running- we tried to catch it but it was to fast. It didnt help that it was a gloomy day. :(
on fortunley that's what dogs do best. I have four the one's out the back won't kill mine but did kill another car why I don't know. My cat Squeak use to lie out the back with them running around her. I have 2 other dogs a yorkie and a pon they keep going for the cats but nothing seriose Ijust keep shouting at them.

The american pit bull was essentially breed to be a fighting dog. Their origins reside in bulldogs a breed used to help ranchers and butchers to control unruly bulls. Most are unfortunately very unpredictable, and once "the kill switch is engaged" there is no turning back.
Do you seriously believe that? One of my rescues is an ex-fighter...who now shares my home with a cat, two other Pits and a rabbit. The dog will do as the owner/alpha wants and encourages. If your dog does not recognize you as alpha, there's a problem, yes. Ignorance about the nature and "language" of dogs is a bigger problem, since the one leads to the other.

They can kill or severely injure both people and other animals without warning. I actually have one Pit and a Pit lab mix by the way (both from rescue). Sorry, you must mean someone else. That person had a cocker spaniel that killed a cat. It wasn't a Pit Bull. My Pits have never seen a cat and so I wouldn't introduce them to one now because they were not raised around cats. However, lots of Pit Bulls get along with cats and other pets.

If I see one of these dogs out the loose and they cross onto my property, I shoot them on sight. I've killed two in the past year that way... I hate pits.

I totally agree with you. Mandy was my dog, and she was sweet. She was one of those real love dogs who liked to cuddle with you no matter what was going on. She was dog agressive though. We treated her kindly and made sure she was well mannered. She was one of the best behaved dogs.. what happend was a shock.

Mother animals often kill and eat their young for inexplicable reasons. This is not just because this dog is a pitbull. They were probably playing with those kittens too much and made her nervous.
I know this is a nice video, but still this type of breed dogs are not fully domesticated in the full sence. It still have some wild traits, I'm talking in general here.

Mistakes happen. This wasn't one you intended or wanted, so I hope you can forgive yourself. A lot of dogs of -all- breeds (including golden retrievers) have a prey drive and can't necessarily be trusted with baby animals, cats and so on. Many can, but dogs are carnivores and predators at the end of the day.

Hey you shouldn't beat yourself up too much about it. Animals are animals and Pitts aren't enormously more aggressive than other dogs, it's just most people don't know how to handle them. Don't blame yourself or the dog for what happened because as sad as that is to humans it's natural to them. At least you still have the white kitten and this still shows that Pitts are capable of being gentle. Oh and stop ragging on him everyone else, it's real big of you to kick someone when they're down huh?

one time in my neiborhood, there was a kitten stuck in a tree and some of the neibors tryed to get it down. There was a dog there too. Finaly we got it to jump down to us and while it was airborne the dog snached it and was swinging it around while running- we tried to catch it but it was to fast. It didnt help that it was a gloomy day. :(

on fortunley that's what dogs do best. I have four the one's out the back won't kill mine but did kill another car why I don't know. My cat Squeak use to lie out the back with them running around her. I have 2 other dogs a yorkie and a pon they keep going for the cats but nothing seriose Ijust keep shouting at them.

WTF? I don't sound UPSET?! I spent the entire f'ing day crying when I was supposed to be enjoying Estonia. Apparently there they think it's cute to sell pictures of kittens to tourists.. it was hell! I am upset. I think people need to see the big picture on things and realize that these things DO happen.. even when dogs have good owners. We never BEAT her, she was well trained, she never BIT anyone. She was socialized and everything seemed like she was the perfect dog until THIS. It hurt

Your honesty is refreshing. It happens a lot that animal mothers kill the young. Perhaps the kit was ill and she sensed it. Animals can tell alot that we don't even know. Whatever the reason the video was cute :)

Yea. Chances are the attack wasn't one of anger, but since the dog took on the position of mother, she let her motherly instincts kick in. And like PreciousPitty said, if the mother senses illness or a defect, that's what's gonna happen

Incidentally, they "banned" Pit Bulls in Denver. Banned means killing them. Denver officials collected about 2,000 Pit Bulls from individuals homes and killed them at the Denver "animal shelter. " That is what a ban is. Taking dogs from their homes and killing them. They were all dogs that had done nothing wrong at all. If that is OK with you, then you are ill. Some, but not all Pit Bull owners are irresponsible. Punish the deed (including humans) not the breed.

There is no such thing as a "kill switch" as well as the myth "once they taste blood, they will be killers" If it would be beneficial to ban the breed because people are cruel to them wouldn't it be beneficial to ban they human race because we are the ones encouraging the behavior? The american pit bull was essentially breed to be a fighting dog. Their origins reside in bulldogs a breed used to help ranchers and butchers to control unruly bulls. Most are unfortunately very unpredictable, and once "the kill switch is engaged" there is no turning back.

Do you seriously believe that? One of my rescues is an ex-fighter...who now shares my home with a cat, two other Pits and a rabbit. The dog will do as the owner/alpha wants and encourages. If your dog does not recognize you as alpha, there's a problem, yes. Ignorance about the nature and "language" of dogs is a bigger problem, since the one leads to the other.

Haha sooo mad. The bottom line is that as much as you would like to think that you "speak dog" you don't. A dog is still an animal.... animals are unpredictable. They can kill or severely injure both people and other animals without warning. I actually have one Pit and a Pit lab mix by the way (both from rescue). I love them, they are obedient, loving and well behaved, but I don't leave my dogs alone with my cat. These people learned the hard way, but I'm not willing to do so.

There is always one puppy or kitten in the pack that is much more fiesty then the others. Its sad for that kitten, but doesnt mean you have a bad dog. It might have claw the dogs eye or something.

Sorry, you must mean someone else. That person had a cocker spaniel that killed a cat. It wasn't a Pit Bull. My Pits have never seen a cat and so I wouldn't introduce them to one now because they were not raised around cats. However, lots of Pit Bulls get along with cats and other pets.

cleanmills, ALL types of dogs kill cats, it happens a lot. As far as dog attacks and bites, other breeds do it more then pitbulls do. In fact they have done several studies on dog attacks/bites and have easily proven it. But pitbull haters dont care, they hate them no matter what even though its the OWNERS FAULT 90% of the time. A GOOD dog owner knows how to by a strong enough leash for the size/power of the dog and most important, knows how to raise a good well behaved dog, not a mean one.

they certainly do not over any other dog. Many, many breeds were bred for their strong bodies and bites, and were raised by people who wanted them to fight and trained them poorly. They are trained to attack by some, but it's NOT an instinct.

i would really like to know who produced this video and said the pit torn up the kitten a month later? I totally agree with you. Mandy was my dog, and she was sweet. She was one of those real love dogs who liked to cuddle with you no matter what was going on. She was dog agressive though. We treated her kindly and made sure she was well mannered. She was one of the best behaved dogs.. what happend was a shock.

Mother animals often kill and eat their young for inexplicable reasons. This is not just because this dog is a pitbull. They were probably playing with those kittens too much and made her nervous.
