the sweetness in his voice,the timing with the tabla and the base in khan sahib's voice is flawless.he is a pure classical singer so it is easy for him to sing playback songs ,a play back singer can never sing classical songs so there is none like khan sahib!!! long live mehdi hassan!

Actually the songs he sang are quite near to pure classical.Asha Bhonsle has sung Ranjish hi Sahi in one of her latest albums but in the worst possible way. If Lataji has n't sung songs like this then what for is she great?

@reach2sonu : It seems you have not heard Lata Ji's songs much. Please listen to "Rasm-e-Ulfat ki nibhayen to nibhayen kaise", "Man Mohana Bade Jhoothe", "Koi Matwaala Aayaa More Dware", "O Sajna Barkha Bahar Aayi".

While all these are pure classical forms the 2nd one is awesome. There are countless more such songs. Lata Ji sang Raag Kambawati in front of an audience at the age of seven. She received her training from her father and is a gifted singer. She is a great classical singer too.

@reach2sonu: Please also do not undermine Asha Ji as well... she is equally gifted and some of her classical numbers are still unmatched. Listen to "Piya Bawari", "Roz Roz Daali Daali", "Man Anand Anand Chayo". Her attempt at this ghazal was a modern one. It is mixed with Guitar and is without Tabla and that is why it sounds bad. If you really have a good sense of music you should not be questioning Lata and Asha Ji's greatness.

Greatest singer . No doubt. Where is Kishore kumar? Lata Manheshkar? The way he has blended Sur with Raag is too intricate. There are many pure classical singers who while singing khayals do Bistars , taans , boltaans , sargams but Mehdi Sahab' ability to pick certain words and do boltan bolbistar with them is unmatched. Ghulam Ali is also near Mehdi Hasan.

FYI, apart from the people you've already noted in the description, some other people that I could notice in this video are: singer Masood Rana, cctor Ismail Shah (late), actress Nighat Butt, actress Rehana Siddiqui (Arifa Siddiqui's aunt), musician and tabla-nawaz Muhammad Tafu, author Mahmood Sham, and somebody looking like journalist Mujeeb-ur-Rehman Shami.

Hey this is really really amazing ghazal. It touches the soul. Mehdi Hassan giving voice to Ahmad Faraz' words is a killer combination anyway.

I wanted to suggest that this particular one tops Khan sahib's own performances of the same ghazal at other occasions but on a second thought, I wouldn't take my chances. He hasn't even been perfectly fit since early 90s so his superlative-super recordings from old days may still be under huge dust in Radio Pakistan/PTV archives or somewhere.
