@MrBaseman111 Fodera Yin-Yang Deluxe, upgrade to the Yin-Yang Standard. Only 6 Deluxe are made and 30 Standards are made per year... Just looked it up myself :D
Victor thanks your video was very helpful! I've been inspired by you for years now! I've been playing bass for 10 years now! The band I'm in is the Habitual Survivors on Facebook. My e- mail is crackertom0109@gmail.com check use out & Victor your the best out there, your just so hard to learn from!
Victor, thank you I am teaching and the chromatic scale is the first scale I tech. Its the easiest to remember. The work is playing the scale starting from all keys.
You must always practice the chromatic, and diatonic scales before you start playing. C'mon chromatic, and diatonic scales are esscentials lessons, begginers lessons.
My rule is similar, if you are improvising to chords and forget what key your in hit a random note, if it fits good. If not slide up a semi-tone and claim to be a musicial genius.
I kinda disagree with the root point. The root is the most important because it gives context to the other notes. The only way music works is indeed staying in key for at least a minimal amount of time.
@TheGus619 C Maj has no accidentals. What he's saying is that C Maj (lika any other key) has five notes that are "wrong". It so happens that in C Maj the "wrong" notes are the black keys on the piano that he's talking about.
The bass is a great instrument. This guy is very literal on what we see in front of us for what we play or what we want play if your a beginner. I kind of felt like this video was a theropy session more than an actual lesson on bass. Nothing wrong with that. Down to earth, nice guy. The chromatic scale is cool in a sense because it connects any thing you want if you want to use it.
does somebody know who are the students victor is teaching?full names or something? especially of the guy with the fodera sixstring (named joe i think), i like his style, when he does solos on the dvd.
Read his book, it's like this, but it's even more in-depth, and properly opens your mind to music and how to play, without preaching techniques or sounds.
"Victor explains that you are never more than a half step from a wrong note" (original description), NO!NO!NO! He says "you are never more than half a step from a RIGHT note", which is much more a positive and usable way of thinking AND FEELING
i love how victor is one of the best bass players of our time and he doesnt use any of the stupid 6 or 7 string basses just keeps it simple you dont need more than four string much love for victor
@Fjord76 True, but that's not what he's saying. He's saying that you are never too far away from a rotten note. He's not saying that at all. He never said scales are completely pointless, he just said the idea and the way we're setting this up isn't working, which is true.
@vonroden sometimes (especially in jazz) , people use "weak" notes deliberately on "strong" beats to make a sort of musical statement. "I want this sound, and i'll be damned if its not in the key" :) Something that my jazz professor told me: "This is *your* solo, there are no wrong notes!" the key (lol pun) is to know what you're playing and know what function it serves in the key you're playing in. that way, you know what you can do to lead up to and resolve those "wrong" notes.
@FVmike That's exactly it. You can play ANY note and make it work, as long as its intentional. You still have to learn the scales, the intervals, and the chords, and only then do you know how to make all of the notes work for you. Music easily becomes stale and predictable if you don't learn how to use accidentals, appogiatura, and chromaticism, how to modulate, how to "borrow" notes. Its why I can't listen to the radio anymore.
Those students are lame. Not one of them smiling... If I was being taught how to play bass by Wooten I would be smiling. I think I should be in the place of one of those students. They simply do not deserve to be in the presence of such a great musician.
@thatguyyoudontfeel i just spent a week with victor in a class setting... as i looked around, a lot of the other students jaws were on the floor and looked like they were melting. at times, some were even crying. i'm not kidding. some of the things he said were so profound it was mind blowing. but yeah, i was smiling like an idiot the whole time, but then again i dont play bass... I just loved to hear him talk about music.
Actually what he does by approaching via the chromatic (and this is not meant to be wrong in any way) scale is randomly "reengineering" the chord-scale approach which connects a certain scale to every single chord and which is the approach that almost all jazz musicians use. He has practiced it so long that he's got the feeling for it but learning scales to the according chords and really focussing the sound of each chord type will get you there much faster. Still, this is my point of view
@jvmc08 Im pretty sure the Asian bass player in the front if from Dream Threater. Thats all I know. They also have Victor Wooten. lol but in all seriousness I only know the guy from Dream Threater. And there is a chance thats not him. But im pretty sure it is.
