He was the best runner, however one thing I hate to admit is that he quit. Emmit had the line from hell, but always wanted the rock. Barry, would sit the whole game if the coach told him to. Sorry, like in movie replacement the coach said, winners want ball at the end of the game.
Impossible to take down in the open field. If you take out all of the negative yards he had from dancing around in the backfield trying to make something happen, his career avg yards/carry goes to 6.5. That's just scary.
Fuck Emmitt Smith, Barry Sanders is the man, if he never retired early he would have had the rushing record in 99 and emmitt smith would've been breaking his record.
dude.....first you say fuck Emmitt Smith then you say he would break Barry Sanders record if he held it....you make no sence.....they both the shit, they both hall of famers!!!
i said if barry sanders didnt retire b4 the 99 season he would have had the rushing title and being that he did retire b4 that 99 season emmitt smith came along and broke the record. I am i'm clear now!!!!
@Firebaugh93622 Smith ran behind probably the best offensive line of all time for the better part of a decade. Sanders did not have near the help that Smith had. Sanders is a far better and more explosive running back than Smith was. Emmitt Smith stumbled his way 3 yards at a time into the hall of fame.
@jackhandy00 ... LOL, best offensive line of all time? Then, how did the Lions lead the league in total offense back in '94? How did Scott Mitchell throw for 4,000 yards? Let me guess...Barry Sanders did everything, right? LOL. Emmitt Smith is the best running back ever because he didn't quit on his team the way Barry did.
@emantabrizi Dont be a homer jack ass. you put Sanders behinde the cowboys O line in the '90s and he would get 2,000 yards a year with a broken leg. Emmit Smith was Just like Hank Aaron..the only thing great about them is how long they could hang around. You said it yourself Sanders was the best runner(root of the term running back). I have no idea what you consider to be part of a complete running back, tripping over your own feet maybe?
@jackhandy00 ... Your post makes absolutely no sense. WTF is a "homer jack ass?" You don't know what a complete running back is? Do you know anything about football? A running back is supposed to do more than just run the ball. A complete running back catches passes (which Emmitt did better than Barry), blocks on pass plays (which Emmitt also did better than Barry), and is tough. Emmitt played with a separated shoulder. Barry would've been on the bench.
@emantabrizi I know Emmit Smith would have made a great guard(unfortunately that is also how he looked with the ball in his hands). But Sanders was not dificient in the pass game(blocking or receiving). Add in Sanders explosive ability and he is a far greater running back than Smith.
@jackhandy00 ... No doubt Sanders was quicker and faster. That's why I said he's the better pure runner of the two. No argument there. I'm talking about a player who did EVERYTHING great, and that was Smith. Add in the fact that Emmitt didn't quit on his team when the Cowboys sucked ('97-'03), and that makes him the better team player, as well.
@emantabrizi the cowboys made the playoffs in '98,'99. I'm so tired of hearing about emmit smith playing forever, I dont care. If you are putting together a roster to win one game who do you take between the two(in their primes)? Sanders was a game changer, Smith was not... all the body sacrafice Smith did for football over a decade and a half in the NFL does not change that fact.
@jackhandy00 ... In Sanders' ten years with the Lions, they made the playoffs five times. Yet, all I ever hear about is how the Lions sucked and had the worst offensive line in football. One player can't take a team to the playoffs. He needs ten other guys to help him. For your one-game scenario, I would take Smith because of his consistency. I remember watching Barry. He would have one carry for 70 yards...and 19 carries for negative yardage.
@jackhandy00 ... Actually, I'm against punting at all. It's okay, though, you can have your precious Barry. I'll take my Super Bowl MVP Emmitt Smith. Good day to you, sir.
@emantabrizi You are the one with the precious Smith(obviously a cowboy fan). Your being a "Homer" that refuses to acknowledge what is obvious to all unbiased observers. Sanders had superior talent. Even if Smith was a better "yes" man.
@jackhandy00 ... Wrong again. I'm not a Cowboys fan. Just a football fan. Oh, and being a team player has nothing to do with being a "yes man." You've obviously never played team sports. Otherwise, you'd understand what it means to be there for your teammates.
@emantabrizi these are grown men with families, not highschool kids. its a whole organization not just his teammates. I cant blame him for not wanting to play in Detroit. Walk away from a bad situation, or sacrafice for it were his options. There was obviously more to life for Sanders than the NFL (even with the incredible talent) And Smith is a HUGE yes man
@emantabrizi He wanted to go somewhere else, the Lions would not trade him or release him(they thought they would be able to force him to play) so his only options were to resign or play for the Lions. Detroit thought Sanders was bluffing about retirement... he wasnt.
@jackhandy00 ... He was a FREE AGENT. Do you know what that means? That means he was FREE to sign with any team he wanted. Instead, he signed a six-year deal with Detroit. Two years into the contract, he requested a trade. When that was denied, he retired.
@jackhandy00 ... Yeah, you're right. In the first year of his contract, Barry Sanders had the best season of a his career. It makes perfect sense that he'd want to retire after that.
@emantabrizi Again, He wanted to go else where and the Lions chose not to let him. its not that he wanted to retire, it was just the better of two bad options for him personally. Sometimes a person must make choices like that in life.
@jackhandy00 ... How is that the better of two bad options? According to every single die-hard Barry Sanders fan, if he had played as long as Emmitt did, he would have put the rushing record out of reach. Is that not a good thing? Wouldn't that have been better than quitting and having the Lions sue him for his signing bonus? God, imagine if Barry played 20 season like Favre has! Wow.
@emantabrizi The fact that I think a record is a good thing only speaks to my status as a fan. Sanders was making a life decision, a record did not mean as much to him as his happiness. What would you do if you were rich, and had a job you did not like? Stick around because of your co-workers(teammates)? Or the 20 year employee pin(records)? That is what football was to him, a job. That does not change the fact that he was the best in the world at his job for a decade.
@Firebaugh93622 It makes perfect sense, Emmitt Smith was in the league till he was fat & gray. All he cared about was his record. Barry Sanders would have been unreachable if he continued playing. Emmitt is a disgrace
@MrJamell21 Had Barry played another 5-6yrs which he could've easily done. Emmit Smith would've never touched the rushing record. Barry is the Jerry Rice of runningbacks. To call him anything short of "Best ever" is an insult.
@Sambarre ... Barry was the most fun to watch, but "best ever?" Barry was definitely the best runner, but if you're talking about the best COMPLETE running back, then Emmitt takes the cake. Nobody forced Barry to retire.
great vid, it was like he was opposite of most of players who entertain today. Instead of coming up with some form of entertainment after he scored a touchdown, the entertainment was in the play. When you're that good, you don't need to celebrate after you score, the way you embarrass everyone on the field was entertaining enough. Like I said, great vid.
I agree with you guys. The funny thing about all this, everyone always gives the same answers every time they're asked, "if you had one play, who would carry the ball for you with the Super Bowl in in the balance" they usually say, Walter Payton, Roger Craig, Larry Czonka, etc. Me, personally, I would take Barry Sanders because he seems to always be able to turn nothing into something. Here's to you Barry, thanks for all the great memories =)
Imagine if he had a good line his entire career.

Man only if he was behind a half way decent line, he would hold every meaningful rushing record.

I shudder to think what this guy could've done with some decent blocking. He always had to create his own holes. I guess we'll never know.
