@visog yes i hear it too. John did some citation sometimes, for example during "dream" (album between nothingness...) he plays "in the sunshine of your love" though the pieces have different time signatures, while Jerry did his great violin solo. Best band of all time !
That is some fast and furious playing ! I thought the album was fast ! whew!
As much as I liked his first band, I think this one was better ... Ralphe Armstrong and Narada Michael Waldon I think were a better backdrop for John and Jon Luc to do some real soaring ! Of all the Mahavishnu albums I like Apocalypse the best. It was really the most masterful album of that era I think. A real tour de force for the band and John's best personal musical offering to the Almighty !
I saw them on the Apocalypse tour and i have never in my life seen a drummer like Walden. he was bouncing up and down on his seat, blissed out, and just unbelievable-- some of the most impressive drumming i have ever seen on stage. that whole show was the kind of experience that leaves you walking on air for days after. incredible!
I saw them live in 1974 at the Celebrity Theatre in Phoenix. Altered state created out of body experience during show. Gayle is an angel. She is saying "bles-sed are the pure in heart" she married Chick Corea.
I like the expression of the girl violinist at 2:03 when ponty and john are trading riffs. She's like "Uh like whatevah. I can't keep up with them!" Ha ha . so funny. These guys were just sick sick sick players!
Also, fwiw, Gayle Moran says without hesitation that John is the "greatest" guitarist. I think she was in ecstacy playing and singing with the MO night after night.
Saw this MO in San Diego (1974?) at the El Cortez. The sound was so much better than the comressed You Tube vids (not really complaining). The concert was very loud, and the soloing/duet "madness" of JM and JLP were always in balance with the vocals. John was on FIRE during this concert.
Sounds like maddness on this recording, believe me it was controlled maddness and it was unbelievable live. Santa Monica Civic, it was crazy good. Some of the most wicked guitar licks ever played! God Bless MVO!
I saw Mahvishnu 3 times. Two times with the first band and one time with this band. For them, the speed was a way to get to an ecstatic outpouring of emotion... a very powerful experience in person.
I wouldn't say, they were on so much of an ego trip as playing at these speeds was not so common those days. They still were pushing the boundaries of the human hand. It was an important developement. Still nowadays it would quite possibly be just pretentious, but it's not only fast, it was innovative back then.
I hope these wankers are embarrased for masturbating all over the part that the girl on keys is supposed to sing. I mean c'mon dudes, were your fucking egos so big back then that you didn't know how to shut up. I love this era of JM but am disturbed by all the masturbation that went on especially with Jean Luc. Too many licks, I like later era JM much better when he matured.
Ponty in my opinion May have been What You call masterbating,But really,In The Battle each night on stage on tour,Mclaughlin was Hoping To be a living example of its not so much what you play or how fast you play it,Its more like Ponty played to his ego,Mclaughlin played to the Hearts of every person there,It was about the Love Of God Not The Love Of Fame and fortune
And By The Way,Mclaughlin wrote the music,And hand picked Gayle for the part,Do you really think that he just wanted to Drown her out,Of Course not, but Ponty was like the Violin is The Premier Instrument Of Melody And Rhythum the guitar is Inferior to the Violin,Here I will Prove It,There. Now I bet people like the violin not the Electric Guitar.Thats What you were looking at,No Masterbating ...Ok
that is not correct! The violin had played its role within the classical orchestra because its tone was louder and longer than the guitar-tone. After electrification the roles changed ! The guitar with all its variations is much superior to the violin what did Paganini say? "I am the master of violin and the guitar is my teacher" This was related to the possibilities of polyphonic guitar music before electrification something a violin-player can only dream of !!
As good as Gayle is (and she *is* an awesome musician), what MO2 lacked was a blazingly innovative ansd highly energetic keyboardist of the caliber of Jan Hammer. George Duke might have fit pretty well into such an ensemble, being a synethsizer contemporary of Hammer's, though funkier and not quite as eclectic.
I know this band Band Extremely Personally,I bet Most Of You Out There Don't know what the song is supposed to sound like, This is from "Visions Of The Emerald Beyond".And almost all the musicians were picked from the The Sri Chimnoy Foundation.Sri Chimnoy Was Mclaughlins Guru as well as Narada and Carol Shrive and Steve Kindler and Carlos Santana Etc.They All were muscians all on a Spiritualy Enlightening Journey,And They Wanted To Give The Light That They Knew to many many others
Wow, You Are Absolutely Correct Mootbooxle I was Hoping To Find Someone that could correct that little "TYPO" and so mootbooxle Receives The Mahavishnu Past and present Knowledge Award.Thank You mootboxle,Seems You Do Know A thing Or Two,Congradulations.Someone Actually reads these comments, thats good to know.Thank You Again.
This is the first chance I've had to hear any of the post-Billy Cobham stuff. Still pretty amazing! Narada Michael Walden Seems to have been a good choice.
At this time Mahavishnu one had really Brought the Music public so much muscianship to the spotlight Especially With Billy Cobham On the Drums,That Pretty Much Every Drummer wanted to Be Cobham,So when MO2 was Formed and Mclaughlin had Chose Narada as The Bands Drummer,Poor Narada Used To Ask Me " Do You Think I filled Billy's Shoes?" I said no because you had a pair of shoes Of your own that one day would have to be filled also.
the best group ever

Gayle didn't know why her and the female violinist were even singing, because they were totally drowned out. Primitive PAs back then.

Hell breaks loose. utmost intensity. Hear and watch the bass lines: the music is complex, the time signatures weird.

Listen closely mahavishnu O was only band that could keep it in check in 20/8 time. Mainly due to Naradra Walden's synco bass foot.
