@1984wrx Yes, it is smoke.  Oil was sprayed onto the 750 degree exhaust gas duct to produce the smoke. This is much like the smoke generator used on small craft like PT boats in WWII.

A note: The Air Cobra was originally a fixed wing aircraft called the P-39 Air Cobra. Most were sent to Russia on the Lend/Lease during WWII. Had an aft mounted engine with the drive shaft going between the pilot's legs.

The brids firing the nails are from the 334th Attack Helicopter Co. (Playboys). When you fried the 20mm, both your VHF and UHF radio buy the farm. Many time the pressure in the cockpit from the 20mm firing would blow the backseat's window/door open. But that 20mm would bring pee on chuck.

You will also see BlueMax and Raider brids in the film. I'll take the new 4 bladed Marine AH-1Z-plus, which can out fly any attack helicopter today.

Army. One of our software reps, whom flew Cobras in Vietnam, that came to help us out said they used them (30mm), but that they preferred the rotary weapons since you could remain moving, and less of a target.

I have yet to see a picture of the gun mounted to the bird, but I've seen pictures of the gun itself. It's very similar to the Apache system, but has a pronounced muzzle brake on it.

Ah that's cool, thanks for telling me that. I am in a similar case where a Navy guy I know who was in Vietnam told me about moutning 20mm cannon on the chin turret of Hueys and even a 40mm CANNON at one point. He saw them, but he couldn't describe them. Says they were part of HAL-(3).

No, I know, he said it was experimented with, both cannons were, but ultimately the 40mm was dropped, the 20mm was a little more successful. Its weird because he said the cannons were on a TAT-101 sort of frame which only the USMC Hueys (UH-1Es) had. It's possible the Navy had access to a surplus of these or something so they decided to do some field mods.

I am really keen to one day settling it and seeing some Huey pics with a 20mm on em in the turret!

Cobra was a fast tatical response helicopter... more agile than the Apache... but has poorer armor protection.... The cobra was extensively used with smaller more agile aircraft as Hunter team.... while Apache was in response to the poor armor of the Cobra during after Vietnam war... Apache is more dedicated for anti-tank role than the Cobra using Hellfire missile..... each has its positive and negative... Apache is also nearly twice as expensive....
