Great clip. For the record, they are lip-synching to their record. I don't know if this was the band's decision, their management (probably not, as they abandoned the Kinks on this tour, right as it ran into problems), the promoters/producers, or the AFM.
This is recorded in '65, not '66 (maybe that's the broadcast date?). They were about to get banned by the AFM from a gringo USA that does not quite understand what they are doing (yet).
Many youngsters got it, though, and a new white American suburban teenage rock angst is about to be born (the Doors, Heavy Metal, Punk, etc).
The way he was goofing off and holding an acoustic guitar, he might as well have been holding a cello. Clearly by 1966, they had tired of performing the same hits over and over (even if it is a kick-ass song).
