a friend of mine sprouted some tasmanian and danish flag seeds indoors. most are doing well, but several of the spouts are withering. they are not being over watered they get some air circulation and sunlight my friend lives in the san francisco bay area. is it okay to now plant them outdoors? right now they are about 2 1/2 inches right now. what can i do to stop them from further deteriorating?

I live in the US and grow poppies in my yard. I take the seeds and scatter them all of the place. I know a couple other guys that do the same thing. The goal is to make poppies a common wild plant in the US
You can cross-pollinate these varieties to produce a single plant with about 30 heads per. Also, you can take the pollen from Papaver orientalis and pollinate the stamen of P.albus or others in the same family to produce an extraordinary hybrid of Poppy that contains many heads per branch. It will look like a hollyhock. Unfortunately, you can't get any seeds out of that "mule" but it is an interesting experiment in botany.
@tpvalley Poppies have a stamen (a female, seed bearing capsule) and a pistil (male sex organs) which surround the stamen circularly. NOTE: Earwigs love to eat the poppy pistils and for that reason you will find stames that have not been fertilized. It would be helpful to use earwig bait to nip this problem at the bud. :) . Undamaged pistils contain pollen which can be introduced to the top of the stamen which looks like a star. This "star" is fuzzy and poppy pollen will stick to it quite well
@Nguli34689 "...and how do u get them to grow indoors?"
Poppies, esp. the annual ones do not fare well indoors or under the artificial light. There is danger of stem rot, root rot, powdery mildew...etc. These problems can be avoided, but it will take a highly skilled botanist to pull this one off. They may be hardy outdoors and like Cannabis have a good survival rate, OUTDOORS. But indoor cultivation of Papaver requires more knowledge than meets the eye. Start them off in November then proceed
@tpvalley "does the mule have no seeds and extra strength?"
When Papaver orientalis or Papaver bracteatum pollen is brushed on to Papaver somniferum stamen, the resulting hybrid would yield an interesting hybrid. Some of these hybrids look like hollyhocks, but they are mules. This means that the new hybrid will not yield seeds no matter how you try. The hybrids are perennials, they have an interesting flower arrangement, the "stars" on the stamen looks different, and they just keep flowering
@tpvalley Before I answer your questions, I wanted to say I like you. You are one of those few people who comment that don't post imbecilic diatribes. The questions you ask of me are valid and I don't mind taking my time to answer you. Native of Persia, Papaver orientalis is an "Oriental Poppy", these are perennial poppies with orange and/or white flowers whose major alkaloids are Oripavine and Thebaine (and are used by pharmaceutical industries to help yield Oxycodone, Hydrocodone et al.
also can u tell me where the pollen comes from ? I understand the parts where it collects on the top (male?) but not the female part and also how come all poppies are not inbreds if they can reproduce by themselves.
Do the raw latex's of oriental poppy offer any high?
This season I planted my persian blue seeds and afghan seeds in big pots two weeks before April and I kept my water bottles in the fridgerator and that helps alot when the temperature outside is realy hot and even on the most hottest and humid days my poppies just kept growing without any problems.I sometimes added ice in my water bottles and spray bottles and my persian blue poppies grew 4 feet tall and my afghan poppies grew about 3 feet tall and the pods took like 3 weeks to fully plump up.
No you're wrong. If you planted poppy seeds in the fall, the seeds would survive over the winter and start growing in the spring - this process is called cold stratification and it's how poppies will naturally propagate. No matter where you are. You wouldn't have flowering plants in May like I did, but your plants would be, bigger, heftier and budding sooner. You can just sow poppy seeds in the Spring, but the plants will take longer in the season to flower and they will not be as hardy.
@Hollyweeds I live in central italy on mountain area. We have plenty of opium poppy growing wild. The seeds can sprout in fall or spring. Those who sprout in fall (sept./oct.) reach the winter in their "flat" phase, are then covered by snow and in march start the "cabbage" phase. They are huge and one only plant can have up to 30 pods. Those who sprout in march start to grow vertically soon and one plant has usually only 3/5 pods... They flower in june. They grow from sea-level to 1200 mt asl

Hey. I've been trying to plant some poppy's and i cant get my seed's to sprout. Can someone help me on this? I've bought raw seed's. And i have had them in for about a week. Its warm here. Very hot. But is it the seed's or climate?
well i gues that answered my question if they can grow through the snow,i have somee p somniferum sprouts, right now, and its pretty cold where i am about 50 in te day and about 45 to about 35 in between there right will my p somniferum sprouts be alright??
usually most grow for the flowering asthetics in Canada. However some cut and collect the blood. In harvested my own years ago but I am not walking that path anymore (10 months sober), I like the sober Darren better.
Hi cool you use poppies for the pain relief or recreational use or do you just like the flowers or the seeds as a spice? I get these growing here in Sweden (very cold country) without problem, they even spread so well that they are now the main weed in my garden! I mostly use them for recreational purpose (poppy tea which makes me feel good in my body) I don't do it often because I don't want to be a dopehead but I am very interested in useful drug plants in general. It's like a special hobby.

Hey Holly what kind of poppies did you grow, are those tasmanian poppies.I have some growing but there in there cabbage phase.I am not sure if they are going to fully grow because of the summer temperature and humdity.Poppies don't grow well in hot climates and I began planting my seeds in the beginning of April.I have some tasmanian and some persian blue poppies along with a few other different types growing but there in there cabbage phase. If they end up dieng then I will replant them in fall.
my grandmother grew poppies she taught me how to grow poppies it is now a tradition to plant a few of them every year

Opium: natural, made by nature. Heroin: unnatural, made by man. I'll choose the 1st.

HI. Is it too late to start something like Hens and Chicks or Afghan White in Northern California in January? I am just starting out at age 60, lol.

Yeah, I heard the snow makes the seeds germinate and then just lay dormant, tis good shit indeed for an early harvest.
