When satriaini comes to the part where coldplay goes See the fear in the enemys eyes satriani goes between 2 notes 3 times then lands with another 3 that are different to the melody coldplay use, goes back to the 3 notes that are the only identical notes to the coldplay song and finishes wth a very different set of notes. The only reason the songs sound similar is because of the chord progression and the 3 notes that are held equally long in both.

seems like satch's guitar melody starts off in either a full octave higher or up a half to whole step from the vocals in coldplays song. Not sure. And there are note variations and arrangement variations throughout. Not too similar to justify copyright infringement in my opinion. With all respect for Satriani - a guitar genius, but he must be hell of an asshole, to accuse anyone of copying, in case of such a dumb harmony played so many times, and equally dumb melody. Anyway, in Satriani's song it sounds awfully uninteresting, and Coldplay have at least arranged it in kinda' quite clever way, by making it's timbre pleasant, and putting nice tension in rythm.

Playing simple 4/4 melodies, whereas there is a whole new world when you step out of pentatonics. I have also taken a wide interest in progressive metal such as opeth and giant squid etc.
That being said, there are much better guitarists than satriani. Beatles are just not my genre.

You can't claim ownership over playing some notes going up and down in a musical scale. There's about 5 notes in the melody, based on a pentatonic scale, which most pop music uses anyway. End of.

There is only 5 notes in commun, and they don't follow themselves. It's normal for artists to be inspired by another one. Listen to all song based on the notes Am, F, C, G, or some other song based on the exact same drum lines...

Actually, no they're not.
When satriaini comes to the part where coldplay goes See the fear in the enemys eyes satriani goes between 2 notes 3 times then lands with another 3 that are different to the melody coldplay use, goes back to the 3 notes that are the only identical notes to the coldplay song and finishes wth a very different set of notes. The only reason the songs sound similar is because of the chord progression and the 3 notes that are held equally long in both.

seems like satch's guitar melody starts off in either a full octave higher or up a half to whole step from the vocals in coldplays song. Not sure. And there are note variations and arrangement variations throughout. Not too similar to justify copyright infringement in my opinion. With all respect for Satriani - a guitar genius, but he must be hell of an asshole, to accuse anyone of copying, in case of such a dumb harmony played so many times, and equally dumb melody. Both could be an idea of a random fool with guitar, really - I'm speaking as one of them. Anyway, in Satriani's song it sounds awfully uninteresting, and Coldplay have at least arranged it in kinda' quite clever way, by making it's timbre pleasant, and putting nice tension in rythm.

@TheSweatyfatguy Yeah... The difference was that the beatles were the jonas brothers of the 60s. Now I didnt find their music appealing, nor interesting. I am interested mainly on technique and such. Playing simple 4/4 melodies, whereas there is a whole new world when you step out of pentatonics. I have also taken a wide interest in progressive metal such as opeth and giant squid etc.
That being said, there are much better guitarists than satriani. Beatles are just not my genre.

You can't claim ownership over playing some notes going up and down in a musical scale. There's about 5 notes in the melody, based on a pentatonic scale, which most pop music uses anyway. End of.

@avinaixa I don't believe this ! It so happens, that I recently composed a song, and really got into it. Then moments later on the radio I heard a song that used the same chord progression, but beginning in a different key, and even very similar melody phrases. This kind of thing happens. We all draw inspiration from the Collective unconscious. So what ? I would rather celebrate different interpretations of what we hear inside.

The bass lines of "Another One Bites The Dust" is exactly the same as a Pink Floyd Song writen before. (Young Lust).
And James Bond Theme has the same riff as a frensh song by Gainsbourg ("Le Pointsonneur des Lilas), writen 2 years before.
Coldplay hasn't copied Satriani, this is just a coincidence

There is only 5 notes in commun, and they don't follow themselves. It's normal for artists to be inspired by another one. Listen to all song based on the notes Am, F, C, G, or some other song based on the exact same drum lines...

Wow these songs are similar. The chorus melody follows an incredibly similar direction. I believe it is a weird coincidence, as a musician, but I may be wrong. HOWEVER! who really cares... Those who like satriani get to carry on listening their preferred song, as do fans of Coldplay...
As for the chord progression... Axis of awesome - four chord song should sort that argument out...
Let both sets of awesome musicians continue creating awesome music...

Its clear that one of Coldplay must be a fan of Satriani having heard this. The chords are the same, the melody line, and the tempo. I think that collectively, this shows that they lifted it from Satriani.

This is a copy, the melody is the same. Coldplay have copied Satriani, it's clear. Oh, and "If I Could Fly" it's better than "Viva La Vida", no doubt. :) Joe is a great artist, but I don't think the same about Coldplay.
