yeah he played this almost note for note like the hendrix version, even the solo, john's is a little different and bluesier, thats why i like johns, he innovated it to a really good version
I'm 48 and grew up listening to Joplin, Morrison, both Jim and Van, Hendrix, Zepplin, Rush. Whenever I hear tributes to some of these great singers songwriters and guitar players who burned so bright and died so young. It makes sniping about who's a better guitar player seem kinda pointless. There is nothing new in music it's all been reinvented since it was invented Janice, Jim, and Jimi, just reinvented it better than others. That's why they are remembered.
Thanks a lot for sharing this. Don;t mind the knuckleheads who give EJ crap. I would sure like to see their guitar resume stacked up against his. EJ is a quiet humble guy who busted ass his whole live on the axe. And is sure shows!
People don't hate john mayer because he's a "bad player" you guys just hate him because he's a douchebag, john is the yngwie malsteem of the blues world, everybody hates him, but don't act like he's not a good songwriter.
although personally i'd rather download their songs so they both won't get any money,
I saw 3 seconds of this video and could stand no more.NOBODY can play jimi's music anywhere close to the way he did so why bother?Just mentioning jimi's name in the same sentance as johhny lang andjohn mayer is a joke.Jimi worked really hard and played hundereds of shows in the few years he was popular so when i see all these tours making a fortune off him it's pretty sickening.how about people come up with some new original music instead of redoing eveyone elses?
@SluFay Music is subjective my friend. The tour is a tribute nothing more, nothing less. John Mayer wasn't there. Sorry you were unhappy. Either way, Eric Johnson is an incredible musician. I've met him and he is incredibly humble.
Jimi said he wanted everyone to do what they want with music. Also, stop looking at the negative side of it. Keep in mind, the more they do this, the more Jimi's legacy is still flowing like electric currents.
@SluFay Thank God you were here to protect Jimi's legacy! I mean, where would Jimi's reputation and place in history be without idiots like you making the same circle-jerk arguments and vitriolic comments about anyone who plays Jimi's music? No matter the shitty little comment— you'll never be Jimi Hendrix nor will you ever be as cool as he was. The homeage to Jimi is in the trying, the doing—not throwing stones at those making the attempt. Now go crawl back under your rock.
Everyone slamming Mayer here is just doing it to get thumbs-ups. If you actually had appreciation for good guitar playing, none of you would be giving John crap.
I love both. Johnson's is a lot more like Hendrix's version, which is amazing. I love how he adds his own melodic sequences in the solo, making it a lot more relaxing. Mayer changed a lot of this song when he covered it, kind of making it his own. Both are great, from either point of view. I'm a Mayer fan though. I could never get tired of his playing.
@sheltech12 Listen jack, your the only one who had a negative remark regarding the sound. I don't know why you have an axe to grind. Your problem isn't with my recording or the sound man. Your problem is you. Go pound salt.
@TomOwenM Ah, no. The sound is tragic. There is a surplus of high-end, and serious distortion in the (deficient) low end. Your camera microphone was overwhelmed. There may be a setting in audio you can change to pad the mic by 10 or 15 dB. Might want to check the Menu.
Both Eric and John's version are good while still being unique. Remember that John's was a studio version, he got as many tries as he wanted on it. Eric is doing this live, one shot for better or worse. At least you can hear what he's singing, when I saw the concert in Milwaukee the sound technicians had everything at 12, it was literally just BZZ BZZ BZZ through 95% of the show because the PA speakers were distorting from the volume.
Eric, Satriani, and Kenny Wayne Shepherd sounded good.
Honestly I liked John Mayer's version more than this, John's solo has more feeling, it might not have as many notes but way more feeling, but thats me Im more into the SRV/blues style of playing not shred.
Hendrix's death bred fellows like Eric Johnson and Satriani, and, as a result, Vai. These three guitarists are so great they can't be compared amongst each other. And Mayer . . . . he isn't even in the question, and never will be, though I love his music dearly.
@petsnowflake Never listened to Mayer while at the same time I am a huge fan of Eric Johnson and Jonny Lang...both of which are extremely humble and grateful to their fan base and will allow photos and autographs. Lang is a Born Again Christian and has been married for 9 years.Johnson is extremely one amazing guy.
@petsnowflake Thanks for the comments and your input. You're right music is subjective. When dealing with great guitarists they are difficult to draw realistic comparisons. Each has their signature sound. You might want to check out my Robert Cray footage. All in all music is subjective and relative to the individual who enjoys it. This was an amazing show. I've met Eric Johnson and he is incredibly one humble dude. After seeing him twice, both times I've wanted to throw my guitars away.
@petsnowflake I don't know why you people are telling John Mayer isn't a good guitarist. Okay, I admit it, he wrote many commercial songs. But he can write commercial songs as he can write Blues Rock songs that kick your ass. This guy is a beast in Blues music, you should watch some live when he's jamming with B.B King, besides, you can't suck when you play with Pino Palladino ;D
Eric Johnson is a better player, but is a much more seasoned artist that Mayer... I wouldn't be surprised if Mayer ends up becoming a better player as he matures
@carinishead i'm a fan of both eric johnson and john mayer. mayer has already had more mainstream success than ej has or will. but jm, while a good guitarist, will never be as advanced of a player that eric is. ej is a virtuoso, has total command of the instrument, impeccable technique, has developed what is likely the most identifiable tone(s) as anyone. he is a master of his craft.
@dnnysrock i don't disagree that he's not as good or even better than the players you just mentioned. but while he's a good player, he's not nearly on the level of eric johnson......and never will be.
@66jtm45 i don't know dude it depends on your taste mayer has great technique and musicallity. i don't know much about eric playing but i know his status.
@66jtm45 mayer has technique more than "rock "gutiar player (slash, clapton ,frusicante etc etc ) what shows have you watched? if you're talking about technique only.

BIG fan of eric, but didn't dig this at all. those bashing mayer can't seriously be using this clip as a comparison?!
Mayer's version is better than this clip, and he has a better band too (jordan/palladino)... Each to their own I s'pose.
