well, at least ed witten's motivation for fine tuning the strings is clear, and i agree with him, no man should have to walk around lookin like that ............. |:
The string is nothing but the edge of the vibrating membrane but what about string with 2 ends where is the membrane there? Think membrane is a different universe where if we zoom down but not on fisical level but with conches mind we find galaxies, stars, planets and maybe tiny humans that r same size as us in their membrane universe and if these humans zoom down the string membrane in their reality they might b looking at us or we might b looking at ourselves. Just a theory,Give it a thought
You know, it's really fun how it looks simple. Five theories that are just relative views on one. Then you realize how behind each is a huge amount of math, completely different from the others. Unifying something like that is, to say the least, impressive.
Simple.. 5 theories because of 5 different elements. Materials, Wood, Water, Fire, Earth... but they are just theories it is still one. The others are just reflections or illusions.
@samtohginleon Honestly I can't understand how people can watch science documentaries and still spout obsolete mysticism to explain the issues therein. The "elements" as understood by the ancients were a description of the world we saw, with modern science we know that, say, wood, water and earth are the same thing - matter - and fire is a chemical reaction. Five string theories has NOTHING to do with "elements" and everything to do with mathematics.
@notrosencrantz :) human found mathematics to measure things. so we try to be smart using theories to calculate elements. Are we getting smarter or moving backwards with our theories today?
well there is something i quite dont understand which is why EM is considerate on the side of the Qantum mechanics , and it is kinda more akward when we know that general relativity was kinda based on the EM equations especially the once related to the mouvement of waves ,Qantum and statistic physiques works diffrently
PS: it is really hard to explain it in english , but i hope someone could get what i mean
alright i think i found my answer , the relation between Quantum and EM can be seen on the interference phenomena on an atomic degree and not the wave equations only
you could had read my answer just below that i found out the explanation , the point was when you look at the definition of EM as a wave , Maxwell equations...ect you get already a definition , but after you go on a sub atomic degree and you check how the EM works for Phenomena such as interference you understand that due to the probability of subject for exemple a photon due to this fact it can existe in several place at the same time which is how Quatum mechanics works
quantum mechanics is the one that came up with wave particle duality.
the first theory that explained wave particle duality of electrons was quantum mechanics. a lot of electronic components or building blocks that we use for electronics works on quantum mechanics principle.
And finally you got to the answer which took me a min of reflection (and which i mentioned i found my answer) and a look on my note books about electromagnetics/wave propagations/Quantum physics.
Interferance phenomena=wave partical duality (the experience).
I don't know what is your knowledge but somehow it seems reduced an open public scientific reviews ,i m not trying to say anything bad about you but the thing i wished for is a more scientific answer which you didn't give me at all.
i have done a lot of electrical and electronic subjects. i was just trying to explain that the building blocks for a lot of electronics is actually based on quantum mechanics.
you cant get a perception of the 11 dimensions , to be more precise not even a 4dimension one from same nature , but it is relatively easy to understand them on a mathematical point of view as in the 3 dimentions , there is space :3ds, plans :2ds and line :1d , it is kinda the same with more complex equations , for exemple 4dimensions space has a Hyperplan of 3ds ect...
Mathematcly they are , physicaly all the hopes are ont LHC , the project is on halt do to an accident but experiments would start again next month if everything is ok , and the project is up till mid 2020s
I must be hitting close to the mark to get some of you so upset. I'm not saying it's a complete waste for everyone. I just don't like the idea of so many young minds going into this and ignoring other more pressing fields of science just because they aren't as sexy. Chances are it will probably be some person in a grass somewhere hut that nails this theory down just like Einstein. Oh do you want fries with that?
You're probably right, some no-body, self-taught mathematician who spends his time learning how to see in eleven dimensions instead of getting laid is going to solve the Field Theory of Strings
What exactly are the practical applications of say relativity or quantum mechanics again? Prime numbers? I guess I didn't know they needed to be studied. This kind of stuff only needs to chewed on by the most brilliant egg heads the rest of us can go work at Burger King because at least that's useful.
then go work at burger king and don't come disturb research on meaning of our being on earth be interrupted by your unwanted, unwelcomed nonsenses. Good luck to you with your wish for ignorance when faced with challenging thoughts. You're just not a thinker so what are youdoing her watching the videos.(fyi:that was not a question but a comment that needs none of your nonsenses)

what r these strings? r they energy? Matter? or some kind of combination of energymatter? Why do all the forces need to have a commonality anyways? And what is a sparticle? Is it some kinda Super particle? I don't like to trivialize their efforts because it is interesting but is there any real point to this? As soon as they discover it there will be another closed door they'll have to open. It just seems like a big waste of time and money.
Well the idea with strings is that they exist in 11 dimensions, and size and shape, being of matter, is something described in the first 3, and movement and change, is described in the 4th, which is time. So when you add 7 more its very difficult to explain in terms you would understand. Just different variables subject to change that the human brain couldn't really comprehend.
The idea is to just keep building on the facts we do know to fill in the holes. Possibly (or likely) quite a lot of the alleys we follow will be dead ends, but this is the nature of physics. Lots of developments in physics (and pure mathematics) have appeared largely useless only to yield highly practical applications -- i.e. relativity, study of prime numbers, quantum mechanics.
Earlier, I use to subscribe to your way of thinking but now, my thoughts are shaping. Today, we don't have practical relevance of such abstruse theory but who knows in future, we might. For instance, what is the use of Prime Numbers? Ask the Crypt-analyst. Another good one is until 1968, the science couldn't explain Strong force but Euler Beta-Function, 200 years before, could do that. It is our limitation to find and applicability of these theories.
it depends on what you mean by 2 dimensional , and what nature are these dimensions , well the basic definition of light , which mean and ElectroMagntic wave it spreads as plan (2dimenssion ) on a direction ,magnetic wave vect(B) and electrostactic vect(E) the magical equation of Maxwell explanes it all
But maybe you mean something else with your question

this theory fails when makes the assumption that the whole universe works as does here in our proximities.
how do you know if somewhere in the universe , does not apply the same theory?
they talk as if they have collected data from the whole universe , to assume this theory fits the whole universe.
