  • BRAVA

  • BRAVA DIVA

  • Incredible! Just incredible!

  • Viva La Diva! Kabaivanska is the last Diva that does justice to the tradition!

  • DIVA DIVA DIVA

  • 嫌だ嫌だ!!

  • L'unica donna che appoggia sul mento, ahahah. Non mi è mai piaciuta. Don't like her, but good idea for Wagner/Strauss repertoire, i'm serious! Si parla dei grandi bluff canori di oggi (che non amo) Ma M.me Kabaivanska non è da meno secondo me! Mia opinione eh!!

  • Bravo! Excellent!

  • i love this singer but youre right. ITS NOT WAGNER.

  • What??????? this is Puccini at its best.

  • I hope not. I still find this enterpretation too screamy and overblown. Showing more the voice than sentiment. It' s ok for Verona. There you have to be heard and needn,t care about nouances and being expressive in more than one way.

  • The screaming you're talking about is SINGING. This aria is talking about the character's DEATH. The character is ABOUT TO DIE. How else can you express it if YOU were to play the character?! If you listen to other versions of Mrs. Kabaivanska singing this, she kind of sounds the same as she does here. You know, it's quite amazing enough that she has enough BREATH left to sing that! How many people have enough breath to carry on ONE FINAL ARIA?! My 2 cents.

  • @EmmyKami Absolutely agreed, and I'm an opera pro.

  • Heart breaking.

  • meravigliosaaaaa

  • She had me at the first "Tu" this was wonderful, I beleived it from second one to 298.

  • For me it,s the better video of Butterfly

  • me hace llorar

  • Wonderful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I sang with her in 1994 and 1995, Tosca, and Butterfly in Oviedo Spain, she was about 60 years old, but when she was singing Butterfly you really belived she was a young girl, was magic, and in Tosca she sang Vissi d'arte and she was !laying on the floor!, her performances have had something magic, and unique.

  • You're very lucky you got to sing with her in the two roles I admire most from her; Butterfly & Tosca! That must've been a GREAT experience for you; one you'll never forget! Who did you play in those operas (which characters)?

  • Does anyone know if there is a video out there of Kabaivanska in Janacek's Makropulos Affair which she did in Bologna I believe with Luca Ronconi's stage direction. I'd love to see it, it's a perfect role for such a diva

  • No my arguments are listening to the voice and not attaching any stupid personal relationships to it..as if you identify with her like people say things like "we won the game" when talking about a something they watched and didn't participate in.. like you actually did it. You are unable to make a rational observation due to your own emotional attachment. Is she a great artist? Sure she is. Is the voice one of the Greats, no.

  • Like Salome who was left with the head of John the Baptist I'll leave you to your absurd disassociation of the aesthetics of the voice form the rest of the artist.

But could you please explain this

"as if you identify with her like people say things like "we won the game" when talking about a something they watched and didn't participate in.. like you actually did it"

It makes no sense to me, could you clarify?

  • understandably.....

  • Though I live in Italy I'm a native English speaker; what you wrote makes no sense. You come here passing out judgements on a great opera singer and you are not capable of articulating a proper English sentence.

  • go ask someone who cares..

  • I have the complete recording but intended to post excerpts later on. Makropoulos case / affair is another priceless RAINA's contribution to the Opera World. A perfect role for a Philosopher of her scale.

  • I'll be looking forward to it. A pity she didn't sing it in Czech of course (I guess Czech would come easier to a Bulgarian ... I guess). Still, further compliments to a diva who tackled such a demnding role when others simply hashed out the same old stuff they had being doing for years.

  • Each argument is damned to failure, cause "talk is cheap". I don't think there are winners/losers in any ART dispute. Right- Opera is musical theater and much more! RAINA is a singing actress with great command of the voice and perfect technique - that's how she overcame her vocal difficulties, but every performer inevitably has such with the years. Being a devoted admirer of hers however,I do hold /not lose/ my high criteria. Anyway, thank you for you words! This dispute was creative in a way.

  • Very true.

  • How very true. To be admirer of KABAIVANSKA means holding the criteria in any sense and certainly not accepting surrogates of any origin.

  • Very true also.

  • my arugument is to keep it out of opera.. the met is already turning away very, very good singers becasue they don't look nice on stage or don't sound like the broadway singers.. this art form is already in trouble .. we dont need comments about how great some tragic singers are..

  • Is keeping it out of opera? Um hello, this is opera. Not musical theatre. Believe me, I KNOW the difference between musical theatre and opera. Sure, the opera is fading away, but what do you think Raina Kabaivanska and Placido Domingo trying to do? They're trying to bring the opera back. Best wishes to you.

  • Your arguments are all based on the fact that you have picked Kabaivanska as the object of your nasty attacks, the very style you choose to do it shows you bad faith. I was lucky enough to hear her several times and you can be sure that no bitchy remarks from you will change the deep admiration I have for her. Her performances are among the greatest experiences I have ever had at the opera.

  • again.. you are talking theater where acting comes first.. her voice is eminating from her throat and not above or even the top side due to abused vocal cords. I listen to her earlier stuff and it is quite good. But even in her Tosca and Verdi the top notes are not good. Think and strung out. They lose pitch as well thruoughout her career. You must be a size queen because Huge is not always better! Look at Ghena Dimitrova Huge and terrible!

  • Well, I wanna stop this argument once and for all. I mean, if you don't like her, than fine. But opera is still theater (and acting too) if you haven't noticed. I myself think her Tosca is great. Like I said to another person, you really need to dig in more to understand Raina's interpretation of the charcter.

  • "Huge" is a pretty relative term. My use of that word /in this particular case/ has nothing to do with the size or the loudness of the voice, but with its artistic quality, the Message of her art! Yes, the human voice is aging too... unfortunately. Once again, my "mistake" is, that for me Opera is Musical Theater.

  • Evidently, we have different perceptions of "great" and "mediocre", cause we're different people, so there is nothing wrong with it. You have an opinion in its own right, of course, and I can understand it, even if I do not share it... I wish you well!

  • the problem is that this a standard for great singing... this is not one of them..coming from one of the top music schools in the world I would have to say that you need to bring up your understanding of opera.. if you equate opera to musical theater, you have a very long way to go.. however if you see each for thier own and keep them separate, stating that this performance was very good in a theatrical way would do you well..

  • meant to say there is a standard for great singing.. it is not just on opinion.. how someone sings technically would lead to understanding of greatness...

  • It's confusing for me even to address you because of your nick, sorry. If you put a "=" between two parts of your nick all my regrets for you, you should go and listen some great variety of performances you can find on youtube.

  • The Art cannot be whore that's why there's no Artist appraised from everyone.

Our beloved mradkova already told you many things, I hope you grasped sth at least the way you should express yourself towards the Greatests. She talks of course for the only Great True Opera existing (Thanks GOD) in which Realm RAINA KABAIVANSKA is the Queen with each and every element of her singing/acting Artistry.

  • Raina gives the benchmark, has already left somewhere in the Heaven and your silly comments for sure cannot reach those hights and throw dirt on it. Be happy in your small box, I'd love to hear your interpretation, I bet it would sound terrifically there.

  • And her face is that of sheer desperation alright.. OMG AM I GOING TO MAKE IT THRU THIS ARIA... and lets see just how loud I can make this and forget about tone so that if they think it is really, really loud the won't notice how my voice is in shreads and color lacking..

  • I respect your vocal abilities and didn't mean to offend you. With all my regards towards you, I still can stand behind each and every word I've said before. KABAIVANSKA is one of the greatest,if not THE greatest /!/ Butterflies ever, even in her fifties. And believe me, it's NOT because of her "loud" singing. Her Greatness is in the unique ability to interpret any role, to "paint" amazing colors and nuances through the means of her voice-instrument. That's what the musical theater is all about.

  • OK..lets get one thing straight.. THIS IS NOT MUSICAL THEATER IT IS OPERA.. and if you want musical theater go to broadway! I never said anything about her acting and one aria doesn't make an actor. Her singing wasn't bad maybe 25 years prior.. but not it is in shreds and cannot match pitch sufficiently enough.. Please do not lower the standards of one of the greatest art forms on earth with your "theater" crap. It is already deteriorating due to the inabilites and those who call it great!

  • KABAIVANSKA may have some technical difficulties at this phase of her career, but.. not in that particular performance and NOT in the final aria. Here the voice is so HUGE, heart-breaking, as if it comes right from Heavens and may blow you away. The so called "imperfections", though, in no way affects /or diminishes/ the tremendous influence and Artistry this woman possesses - in fact, they increase the dramatic expressiveness of her character. IMO, RAINA generates pure electricity on the stage.

  • Agreed!

  • Dear mradkova, with this comment you hit the mark, definitely. No other words can be added without losing there sense. This is just perfect. Thank you so much for your insight.

  • Thank you, amlirco, for your words, which I accept more like a deep respect towards RAINA, rather than a compliment to myself. It's kind of sad, my point regarding the principles of True Art wasn't clear enough... No real "feed back" from this person, except some rude, sarcastic, but groundless "accusations". The greatest artists don't need any defenders. In such moments, our silent penetration into the Divine realms is all we may offer, being just humble students, listeners, spectators...

  • There is no connection in any real or surreal level between the True Art (not its surrogates) and accusation. The Life has proved these two manifestetions human (?!) nature are of the completely diffirent scales. There can be only a humble opinion but above all as you said a silent penetration.

  • Thanks you too, Maria. And Nikolay, I couldn't agree more.

  • BAH HA HA... sing on the edge.. if you only knew how stupid that sounds.. and her singing is way over the edge.. of pitch.. wabbly and no roundness of tone..

On the edge.. so damn funny..

  • take a look at her face and mount at 124 or so.. talk about screaming.. OPERA IS NOT ABOUT SCREAMING>>

  • To call the Genius of Opera art a ..."dying cat" is the last thing somebody could say about KABAIVANSKA. Her name should always be written with capital letters in the golden musical history. Desperation has different artistic expressions and the so called "screaming" is actually singing ON THE EDGE. And her face...it is a vivid picture - a masterpiece, itself - representing thousands of intense emotions, all at once.

  • The "poor" child is really poor: the boy sees /and is held by/ his mother for the last time in his life. In such a dramatic moment, that frantic clasp is the only possible farewell caress towards a son... And well, who else may "scream", and go mad, and dye like that on the stage?! I think, the only appreciation of her art is the one beyond words. Deep bow before RAINA!

  • Agree with you 100% Maria. Raina has everything to give in this performance. Most opera are tradegies OPERAWHORE64! You need to put your head in the right picture and understand something. RAINA KABAIVANSKA is a true lady, a true artist. So there OperaWhore64.

  • that poor child to have to sit there and listen to that dying cat.. at 230 he is even struggling to get away..

  • Huh?

  • meaning she was terrible and sounded like a dying cat.. the poor boy if you look was trying to turn his head away and she wasn't letting him go..HA HA HA..

  • was für ein expressionsaufbruch...bravaaaaaa

  • Seriosly, the title is Iddio (child), not addio!

  • Iddio means actually Dio but not child.

  • My bad :D

  • WHY IS THE BOY WEARING FURISODE??? THATS A 21 year old unmarried womens KIMONO??? Someone needs to teach all these people about the art of kimono, and how the type you wear shows who you are and yoru age. LOL, I think I've seen to much kabuki hahahaha

  • I visited Madama Butterfly in Prague opera 2 weeks ago with Christina Vassileva, she is also bulgarien, but only half bulgarien, but, no, she cannot compare to Raina, lucky people, who could hear Raina in Butterfly live, it should be really something....I was crying during this aria in Prague but now when I hear it with Raina.....whow!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • The title should be Iddio, not addio. :P

  • I think she has a fantastic strong voice for Puccini heroines. I also love her version of Tosca when she stars alongside Placido Domingo. Very dramatic!!!

  • Oh yeah, for Tosca, that's one of the best drama opera movies I've ever seen!

And I agree of what you said about her voice too. :)

  • Absolutely thrilling! No other Butterfly could move such deeply...

  • Agreed completely! :D

  • Yes a fantastic butterfly, so was Scotto at the arena di Verona, she sang just one performance in the late eighties which I was lucky enough to hear... quite honestly I wouldn't be able to choose between them

  • Ok, she may not be 18 years old like Butterfly is supposed to be, but this is what it's all about, no soppy, weepy nonsense, its drama, larger than life, tragic, rock steady voice and absolute concentration .... this is how Puccini should be done, otherwise don't bother.

I was lucky enough to hear her several times live

  • LUCKY!!! You mean like concerts?

  • No, I heard her as Butterfly, Adriana and the Merry Widow in Italian at Teatro La Fenice

  • Which performance of Butterfly did you see her in? Did you ever get to meet her at all?

  • I don't remember the exact date but it was at la Fenice in Venice in the late eighties or early nineties. At that stage I was no longer into bothering poor singers after they have given their everything :-)

  • That's cool! Was she nice? I've been told many times that she's really sweet and I believe it!

  • She was very nice to the audience, she responded warmly to the sincerely felt applause! but like a true prima donna ... with class! friends of mine involved in an opera festival here, told me she was very helpful in giving moral support a young singer they had who was suffering from an attack of stage fright. The singer in question gave an impressive performance

  • You're right, Raina Kabaivanska is a great singer and a true Lady.

  • Aww... that's very sweet of her to help out! :)

  • Brava Raina. She picks that kid up by his neck and his feet leave the ground. LOL

  • Haha yeah. :p I'm thinking that song got her everytime she sang it. But she puts her emotion in the right place. :)

  • she's amazing an her voice to......

  • Yep!

  • Thanks!!!

  • You're welcome!:)
