this man is like he is comming from another planet......awesome drumming...I don't know if there is someone in this world that can do what Mike Mangini does on drums
Yea he has lots of energy, but that wasn't a great solo whatsoever. Pretty boring (in my opinion). Portnoy had such technique and amazing rhythm. Not seeing that anymore with Mangini.
DT fans were hypnotized by MP for too long .. just like when you're with a girl for a looong time and you broke up, and then came another girl .. you just can't forget the ol' bitch .. rite .. now its time to see what's in the future .. not just look at the middle mirror in the car ..you'll be hit
@TheCorpse1978 I agree. It's not that Mike Portnoy is not a great drummer in his own right. Mike Mangini really is on a whole other level. I find evidence of this in his solos, as well as his technique. He is a true master of the drum set and a joy to listen to. While I would have loved to have seen Thomas Lang, Mike Mangini is a wonderful fit for one of the most amazing bands to ever walk this planet. Rock on Mr. Mangini!
don't get me wrong, this guy is really good, he is a great drummer but, its all about technique... i don't see the same feeling like portnoy when dt perform love! sorry !! it is not the same !
@Hansesc2 Really. Well. Check out Buddy Rich. Any year. Just type it in. Then you will see how real drummers can play. Take away the reverb and all of the garbage this guy has around him ,and you are left with,........nothing. Type in Buddy Rich.
@gethsenamane Wow, I'm getting schooled on Buddy Rich. I grew up on Buddy Rich. My drum set was a clone, all the albums I had as a kid were his, I saw him live several months before he died. He was phenominal and NO ONE plays the type of music he played better than he did. Buddy's left hand was the eight wonder of the world. I can undersatnd why someone might not like Mangini's style but between his speed and polyrhythems it seems to me that his playing should be respected. But this is youtube.
@Hansesc2 part2. The best explanation of Buddy's left hand is no explanation. Get "Buddy Rich up close" and queue up the slowmo part in West Side Story as Buddy is bringing the band back in after his solo. It's awe inspiring. I'm certain that Mangini can't do that. I'm also certain that Buddy can't clock 1200+ BPM with a single stroke roll (his was a flawless 930 - 1000ish). One is the epitome of musical finesse, the other is the epitome of technique and natural ability.
Of course Mike is better than Mike in terms of technique, but I feel like he is playing to the lowest common denominator with his solos. Too much technique and not enough breathing room. Of course that doesn't make him a bad srummer, just not the kind of guy who you can watch solo for a long time.
@darthjoey13 I'm not so sure of that. But I think this is a solo which he has done in every gig in the tour? If I think about this it does not sound unic or special, it is just showing technicues and mostly speed.
@BrMrcLeao and wtf do YOU know about drums? it's the same shit, both made in Japan...just with a different label on the bass drum head. i think BOTH sound like shit. Americans make the best drum kits, and the best of the best came out in the 60's and 70's. start basing your opinions on actual product knowledge, and not the endorser before you cast your hat into the ring of opinions...or a drummer like me will come along and verbally put their foot up your ass.
Like it or not musically speaking, but the guy has some firepower and superior technique than even Portnoy himself would have some serious difficulties to top.
Anyway, comparisons suck (and so do I by making one). Let's enjoy the music !
@SERCHSOS3722 Uncomfortable? When the hell did YOU play it? Wierd? He can do more with one hand than most people can do with both. He plays both right handed AND left handed.. The guy is on his own level of talent. I have yet to see a drummer that can do what he can..
@mhudson1970 Well i haven't played it man, but i've seen it, and that's enough for me to say it, i guess. Personally i could never be comfotable playing his set, it's just my point of view. And take it easy, it's just one opinion, and i'm not saying that he plays bad or something like that (he plays tremedously awesome), i only said that i don't like the setting of his kit, in few words... :)
Neil Peart cannot play circles around Mike Mangini. They are both great. Neil is one of the most influential drummers ever, but MM is a double bass freak. Read his former Drumhead instructional articles. Mike is an absolute master. He was Steve Vai's Drummer for years. Finally he gets to be f -ing rock star! A humble, enthusiastic, awesome guy who deserves the late blooming fame. Kill it, MIke!
@lordmiklaus He's in a project with Russell Allen (the Symphony X singer) and some other guys called Adrenaline Mob. It sounds like Black Label Society.
é um excelente baterista mais ele nao tem velocidade no pedal falta potencia pra ele^^ tirando isso ele é very good ... prefiro AQUILES PRIESTER dale de 10 nesse cara aew^^
@amitos80 5 bass drums if you include the 20" Gong bass drum (one of the ones he hits at the very beginning). ;) BTW, when does he use that big 24" or 26" one? I bet that thing sounds sweet!
In the world of amazing world class musicians, there is no better...there are only creative and interpretive differences. Mike P. and Mike M. are both phenomenal in their own right. It's like saying Ferrari is better than Lamborghini...they are both marvels of engineering bliss. All hail to both Mike's.
On my opinion DT guys should pick Marco Minnemann...hes not less good but hes also reminds me of Mike Portnoy how hes playing drums with so much fun...but its just my opinion...
Out of all Mike Mangini's drum solos I've seen from this tour, I'd have to say this one in Tel Aviv is the best. Mike does some really cool stuff here and the audience is most appreciative.. 1:34 does stand out as especially wicked! :)

Check-out Marvin "Smitty" Smith + John Blackwell as see how its properly executed from a musical and artistic perspective.
