Yea he has lots of energy, but that wasn't a great solo whatsoever. Pretty boring (in my opinion). Portnoy had such technique and amazing rhythm. Not seeing that anymore with Mangini.

@TheCorpse1978 I agree. It's not that Mike Portnoy is not a great drummer in his own right. Mike Mangini really is on a whole other level. I find evidence of this in his solos, as well as his technique. He is a true master of the drum set and a joy to listen to. While I would have loved to have seen Thomas Lang, Mike Mangini is a wonderful fit for one of the most amazing bands to ever walk this planet. Rock on Mr. Mangini!

@gethsenamane Wow, I'm getting schooled on Buddy Rich. I grew up on Buddy Rich. My drum set was a clone, all the albums I had as a kid were his, I saw him live several months before he died. He was phenominal and NO ONE plays the type of music he played better than he did. Buddy's left hand was the eight wonder of the world. I can undersatnd why someone might not like Mangini's style but between his speed and polyrhythems it seems to me that his playing should be respected. But this is youtube.

@Hansesc2 part2. The best explanation of Buddy's left hand is no explanation. Get "Buddy Rich up close" and queue up the slowmo part in West Side Story as Buddy is bringing the band back in after his solo. It's awe inspiring. I'm certain that Mangini can't do that. I'm also certain that Buddy can't clock 1200+ BPM with a single stroke roll (his was a flawless 930 - 1000ish). One is the epitome of musical finesse, the other is the epitome of technique and natural ability.

Of course Mike is better than Mike in terms of technique, but I feel like he is playing to the lowest common denominator with his solos. Too much technique and not enough breathing room. Of course that doesn't make him a bad srummer, just not the kind of guy who you can watch solo for a long time.

Americans make the best drum kits, and the best of the best came out in the 60's and 70's. start basing your opinions on actual product knowledge, and not the endorser before you cast your hat into the ring of opinions...or a drummer like me will come along and verbally put their foot up your ass.

Like it or not musically speaking, but the guy has some firepower and superior technique than even Portnoy himself would have some serious difficulties to top.

And take it easy, it's just one opinion, and i'm not saying that he plays bad or something like that (he plays tremedously awesome), i only said that i don't like the setting of his kit, in few words... :)

Neil Peart cannot play circles around Mike Mangini. They are both great. Neil is one of the most influential drummers ever, but MM is a double bass freak. Read his former Drumhead instructional articles. Mike is an absolute master. He was Steve Vai's Drummer for years. Finally he gets to be f -ing rock star! A humble, enthusiastic, awesome guy who deserves the late blooming fame. Kill it, MIke!

Out of all Mike Mangini's drum solos I've seen from this tour, I'd have to say this one in Tel Aviv is the best. Mike does some really cool stuff here and the audience is most appreciative.. 1:34 does stand out as especially wicked! :)
