This song is anything but easy to sing. It almost is 'a capella' and really shows what a good singer Eric is. Not one time the instruments would give him a melody in the background to lean on, but he never loses his track. Great! Absolutely awesome!
Eric is just the f****king best. Thanks for everything, man......... and here's hoping you keep at it. Saw you at the ABC (Australia) Studio 22 sessions a few years back.

This is an unknown gem that was never released during The Animals career, but only much later on a rare compilation. My theory it was never released in its day is that the theme of sympathy for a (presumably) black criminal would have been controversial in the USA in the mid-60s
This has to be one of the greatest versions of the Oscar Brown (?) 'Work Song' jazz standard. Correct me if I'm wrong, a rumba instead of swing?, pretty cool.
I hadn't known there was any lyrics, either.
Sammy Davis sang it...I heard..but could not find it anywhere.
Great version...thanks.
This has changed my lifelong belief about Eric Burdon. He really was in his prime during the sixties, and when he started War, for sure. This gives me a side of him I never knew existed..
@kevincanwait Because Eric Burdon has such a deep voice, people don't realize what a range he had, and he could hit high notes that don't sound high because of the pitch of his voice. But try to sing along with most of his hits, and there are places where your pants will fall down if you try to hit those high notes.
So you should listen to " I am crying" from the same Magnificent rock band then you'll be allowed to shit around yourself .Long live with the ANIMALS and ultra talented Eric Burdon .
theinfluencer, they didn't record a studio version of Work Song, though there is a great version from a BBC radio session which has been included on some CD releases. : )
Yes, I know that a magical shirt... It change color when a real good musician wears it, like Eric Burdon or Ray Charles, Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon... etc . Bessie Smith'd got a magical color changing dress.:)
Thanks, Magus! I never saw or heard Eric and the lads perform this one before. I had a long-awaited career breakthrough today, came home to relax with a little Eric, and this video is the icing on the cake! NOTHING feels better Eric on the ears! Thanks again!
