Sadly, this is not part of the Time Machine set, which I will be seeing for the third time this tour at the O2 Arena in London later today. Not complaining; the TM set is awesome. Can only hope that this is brought back for the Clockwork Angels tour and filmed in HD. I can't wait to hear the London crowd's reaction to the second verse of The Camera Eye. I for one, will be wailing like a banshee! :D Rush on!
In all my years as a fan of this most glorious band I have never seen them play any of Cygnus X-1 book II (except maybe a snippet as part of a medley—although I think that was from book I). This vid of them performing the Prelude is just mind-numbingly wonderful.
What if they did a tour where they played 2112/Farewell Kings/Hemispheres songs. Would they get burnt out? I think they would. Yes I realize who I am talking about... If they could do it that would so sick
2:30 to me is what rock n roll is all about. that moment man! there's a definite need for more heartfelt write-what-you-feel ART like this in today's world, I think.
Nobody ever did the wall of sound better than Rush. This video just captures how electrifying they really are--to the point that it's actually moving to see this after all these years.
Neil's drums haven't sounded this good for a long time - his Ludwig era gave him his best drum sounds, no matter how deep into the DW philosophy he is. The live recordings and videos don't lie.
Ive seen all songs from hemispheres except this one!! Heard Circumstances on S&A in Calgary, The Trees on S&A In Edmonton and La Villa Strangiato On TMT in Toronto. I was hoping to hear this one on the TMT but it wasnt in the cards. Maybe on the Clockwork Angels Tour...
well i dont even expect them to play al 20 minutes of it but Id like to hear the prelude. But all in all Im happy any chance I get to see Rush, regardless of the songs they play or dont play.
This is my "winter" album. This record was what got me through several long, cold, dark, dismal winters in Montana during high school. At first I didn't like it that much, but when I strapped on the headphones, opened up the album cover & thought about the chord progressions & voicings, I thought "this is as good as any fusion record I have ever heard, only with as much or more energy" since I had grown up with Return To Forever, Herbie Hancock, Yes, etc. I was diehard after that, my sophomore year.
This is my "winter" album. This record was what got me through several long, cold, dark, dismal winters in Montana during high school. Rush should never have dumped Terry Brown. They were so influenced by british rock/pop bands in the 80`s they just had to use a pop producer, nearly killed them off certainly pissed Alec Lifeson off he re done all the geets on Power Windows. But Lifson has to get credit for the way he handled all those crap keyboards by still playing some amazing guitar. Middletown Dreams is a Classic.
For anyone who cares, in the recent documentary, Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage, they talk about the Hemispheres album.
Geddy said they wrote all the music and lyrics only to find out that all the songs were written above his vocal range but it was too late to change anything.
They also said it almost killed them to make that album and they decided they would never attempt something like that again.
@BobCobbTheMaestro i have btls on my ipod...watch it all the time...the part about xanadu and hemispheres was truly amazing...watching the other greats in the music world talk about these guys as gods...truly truly blessed to witness this band in my lifetime
Freaky - I actually got the chance to play that guitar in '93, taking a break while Lerxst's tech was working on another ax - sadly I never actually saw it and Lerxst in action: wow.
Harmonics are really amped out on guitar. Killer wall of sound. Great video. Hemispheres is my favorite RUSH album. It takes me somewhere else. That's when their music matured. From 2001 Space Odyssey to STAR WARS. Something like that.
Was at this show! Xanadu/Hemispheres collide...BEYOND exstacy!!!
Still think RTB and Counterparts tours were the best in terms of stage production. 20 ft. Bunnies popping out of giant hats.. AND..one kills the other with a shot-gun, the stage opening up on the ramp along Neil, illuminating colors, lasers, fog/smoke (for Xanadu) fire(Animate), etc...
Not to say their most recent has not been impressive..but...I guess these tours hold a special place.

instead of g3, bx3 or whatever the thing is for drummers they should get one of the best bassists, guitarists, and drummers. right they already have that its called RUSH
Apollo was astonished, Dionysus thought me mad. But they heard my story further And they wondered, and were sad. Looking down from Olympus on a world of doubt and fear. It's surface splintered into sorry Hemispheres....
We can walk our road together, If our goals are all the same. We can run alone and free, If we pursue a different aim. Let the love of truth be lighted. Let the truth of love shine clear. Sensibility, Armed with sense and liberty. With the heart and mind united in a single, perfect, sphere...
Excelent vid, excelent song, this one definately has the best vocal of all the hemispheres videos ive watched... except the ones from yerded1 from 1978. I recomend both those recodings to any one who loves this song.
Hemispheres Prelude! FUCKIN' AWESOME!!! The hair on my arms is standing up!!! JUST AMAZING!!! RUSH IS THE BEST BAND ON EARTH!!! HANDS DOWN! THE BEST! This tour kicked major ass! Thanks for posting!!!
wow ! great video, sound was incredible ! where was this at?? This was vintage rush, everything they do is great but this is what Rush is all about, complex, sweet, just awesome RUSH, SIMPLY RULES THE PLANET !!!
@soarwing11 not to correct you my friend...but there is rush ...and there is not rush.....and there is the rest...and there is average...(cept pink floyd)
Damn! This is one of my fav Rush tunes. Im suprised to find a live version of it which is very unfortunate. I wish they would play this and more songs from this era of Rush when they tour. Id spend 500 bucks to hear them play this and 2112 the entire way through alone! Id pay even more to see em play stuff like The Necromancer, Anthem, Bastille Day, Lessons, and everything else pre-Moving Pictures. That was most def the best!!!!
Ive seen them 3 times in concert and despite how long the show lasts it never seems like its long enough the shows fly by they have the audience in a trance the entire time.
I hope to catch them at least one more time before this amazing ride called RUSH ends.
Their music is beyond amazing, though I think on tour their new humor stuff doesn't compare. Seems like around this time it was more purely about music with a little goofing off but it seemed more natural or subtle like at 2:25. They still do an awesome show though and I've seen them every time since Presto. Love the echo the vocals and 2:00 to 3:00 is some of there stuff that takes them above all other bands in my opinion.
Oh relax. Rush will be doing it for years because, as Geddy said, "We can't think of what else to do." Unless one of them develops a passion for marlin fishing and loses a finger, they will do it until their fans go deaf.
Rush and their amazing music has been a part of my life since I was only 15 years old back 1976 when I bought my first Rush album. Someday, hopefully many years from now, when these brilliant musicians finally end their musical careers, this grown man is going to cry like a girl for days! Come on old timers, tell me I'm not alone here!
Im 18 and I managed to introduce a couple of friends to Rush and they both thought they were a great band. Although I didn't start liking them from a long time ago, I really enjoy listening to their music and would be really upset if they stop before I see them live. Although there's a generation gap, YOUR NOT ALONE!!! :)
If you haven't seen them live - you haven't lived my friend! They absolutely ROCK with a solid 3 hours of music except for a 20 minute intermission and they play flawlessly. True and consummate professionals! I've never seen band in 40 years pay as much attention to giving the audience it's money's worth than these guys. It's always been a religious experience for me and I've seen every tour since Hemispheres in 1978. In all that time not one less-than-perfect show! Truly a class act!
Im with ya brother! I am 43. I was turned on to these guys when "All The World's a Stage" came out and have been hooked ever since.Seen them in concert at least fifteen times, sometimes numerous times on the same tour! When they "retire" I am going cry like a baby too!!! I may even go to Canada and ask the guys,"Please, just one more record, just one more tour!!"
I saw this tour in Los Angeles! When Alex broke out the Gibson double neck on and they went into this I almost shit my pants! AWESOME!! Wish they still made songs like this...beautiful and heavy!! HELL YES!!
I can't stand Vapor Trails. I find it to to be quite a muddied mix. I can't pick just one favorite. I imagine it being like being asked which of your kids you prefer.
I always liked how Rush made artistic music out of events in reality, or what was philosophised. Hemispheres is really great like the Who's Tommy, but Rush also has many other great concept albums. The sound is incredible.
They sounded sooo great back then! This sounded pretty great, here, too! Ged did better vocals than the '94 tour clip that I saw earlier. Better control!
It's kewl to see Alex with Hair, flinging about! Like a rocker...but it must be hot under the coat.Well, this is inside, and normally in the winter, as aposed to now, playing the sheds
This album is priceless. This band is priceless. RUSH ya that's what I'm talking about !! Lifeson, the KING of arpeggiated chords. RUSH and DEEP PURPLE that's all you need!
Man, I would pay good money to get my hands on some vintage footage of this song from the Hemispheres tour in '78. Do you think they still have some stuff in the vault that is yet to be released?
I'm seeing them 7-27-7 in Phoenix. Sat in 5th row last time, can't afford it this time. I love in this vid when Tom Sawyer starts and that guy on the left shoots out of his seat with the "rock on" gesture. What a lovable site for the most lovable band ever!!
In Lerxst's defense, he only stated that the doubleneck was crushed by an elephant. He never went into the specific process by which the pesky pachyderm destroyed the instrument (nor did he mention the intent behind the act).

Definitly up there with 2112, Vapor Trails, & Exit Stage Left.

im not a big fan of Vapor Trails... Exit Steg Left is a live album.... 2112 is great though

I can't stand Vapor Trails. I find it to to be quite a muddied mix. I can't pick just one favorite. I imagine it being like being asked which of your kids you prefer.

I think they nailed Secret Touch

I always liked how Rush made artistic music out of events in reality, or what was philosophised. Hemispheres is really great like the Who's Tommy, but Rush also has many other great concept albums. The sound is incredible.
woodenshews 4 years ago
Thanks for that intheflesh92. Its sounds similar, so i dont understand why the change, only geddy will know!
bloobloos 4 years ago
When I first heard Hemispheres, I didn't know what to think of it but it quickly grew on me and is one of their best albums for pure artistry.

The part at 1:48 is when I'd put down my bong, and put my fist in the air, shouting, "F*ck yeah!!".

Still my favorite Rush song.

I would have preffered geddy to use a Ricky, however it still kicks ass!
bloobloos 4 years ago
You gotta play a Ricky on this tune! What up, Ged?
3eyedho 4 years ago
Yeh, i prefered the ricky sound! I dunno wot bass he is playing on this? The ricky has a more clicky rough sound. Ahh, each to his own!
bloobloos 4 years ago
he's using a jazz bass

Saw them do this in 1980 whole epic kings , HEMISPHERES, at International ampitheater in Chicago, Iwas 17 at the time. oh the show was great.
chumaluf 4 years ago
They sounded sooo great back then! This sounded pretty great, here, too! Ged did better vocals than the '94 tour clip that I saw earlier. Better control!

submit? you actually make me submit to this crap/ and this garden road or what!?!!?

This album is priceless. This band is priceless. RUSH ya that's what I'm talking about !! Lifeson, the KING of arpeggiated chords. RUSH and DEEP PURPLE that's all you need!

Seeing these guys tomorrow. It's going to be so awesome.

Man, I would pay good money to get my hands on some vintage footage of this song from the Hemispheres tour in '78. Do you think they still have some stuff in the vault that is yet to be released?
jonpaulmoen 4 years ago
Personally, i would like to hear this live over the 2112 Overature. But apparently they aren't playing either!

DrShrinker 4 years ago
That bastard Lerxst lied when he said an elephant sat on his double neck! What's the world coming to if we can't take Alex at his word?! ;-)
