personally I dislike the marine corps's attitude, or at least certain aspects of it, and the hangers on/coattail followers, some of this reeks of propaganda machiavelli AND plato suggested be used in creating loyal soldiers, and while I admit there is a certain survival advantage to believing one is invincible it's a difficult balancing act because the tradeoff is arrogance, at least by certain members, the marine corps certainly attracts this

Yes a Marine is a marksman first and whatever his job is second but as far as training goes if you have an infantry MOS then you go to School of Infantry SOI and non infantry MOS go to MCT Marine Combat Training. there is a diffrence

@RoelfDuPlooy the marine corps has a program called the DEP which means delayed entry program. all marines must be a poolee before they're a recruit just to make sure you meet USMC requirements some are in longer than others depending how close to standard they are some are only in for days some for months up to a year. that's why shipdates for marine corps bootcamp are so far apart

All Marines are basic riflemen first, whatever job they are assigned second. All Marines go through the exact same training in bootcamp and then infantry training no matter what their job specialty. They have to requalify with the rifle every year. They must pass a knowledge test every year.
I am dman proud to call myself a United States Marine even after being out of active duty for more than 16 years. I wasn't given the name Marine, I earned it!!

personally I dislike the marine corps's attitude, or at least certain aspects of it, and the hangers on/coattail followers, some of this reeks of propaganda machiavelli AND plato suggested be used in creating loyal soldiers, and while I admit there is a certain survival advantage to believing one is invincible it's a difficult balancing act because the tradeoff is arrogance, at least by certain members, the marine corps certainly attracts this
anyways, all that aside, the appeal is brotherhood

Yes a Marine is a marksman first and whatever his job is second but as far as training goes if you have an infantry MOS then you go to School of Infantry SOI and non infantry MOS go to MCT Marine Combat Training. there is a diffrence
and Marines keep their heads up

Recruitment is up 40% since 9/11 and a lot of people like to DEP before they get sent to boot camp.

@RoelfDuPlooy the marine corps has a program called the DEP which means delayed entry program. all marines must be a poolee before they're a recruit just to make sure you meet USMC requirements some are in longer than others depending how close to standard they are some are only in for days some for months up to a year. that's why shipdates for marine corps bootcamp are so far apart

All Marines are basic riflemen first, whatever job they are assigned second. All Marines go through the exact same training in bootcamp and then infantry training no matter what their job specialty. They have to requalify with the rifle every year. They must pass a knowledge test every year.
I am dman proud to call myself a United States Marine even after being out of active duty for more than 16 years. I wasn't given the name Marine, I earned it!!

@thegame245 Everyone has to understand there is that chance of dying, and then overcoming the fear of dying. Courage is not a word thrown around in the Corps lightly and that's why it is a core value. Courage is the willingness to face physical, mental, and emotional fears and overcome them. You can have fear, you just have to be able to cope with it. I encourage anyone who wishes to join to do a bit of soul searching. Do you want to be a Marine or do you want to be safe in your civvie job?
