The base was obsolete, and the location didn't make sense. I enjoyed my time there (crosstraining into F-16 engine weenie 1984) but can see why it got the BRAC axe since it had no flying mission.
It DID have fascinating Old Air Force "vibes" due to so many structures accumulating over time.
The captioning in this video is cretinous but funny.
@dw33b thank you. I am being a bit snarky. I have another longer one on my channel- it won't let me post a link. But it is 3 minutes if you wanna watch it.
I like to mock the old Soviet style propaganda by emulating it.
I would love to go through some of the old buildings at chunute to see what they look like on the inside now,,,I was born at chunute and still live in rantoul; but I dont know if its allowed or not to go through the buildings
This old AF base didn't get cleaned up like other bases that got closed. Shame. I live in Sacramento, CA, which was touched by two base closures and an Army depot closure. These facilities got cleaned up properly. Chanute AFB is not near a major city so the f**k cares! Shame.
Chanute is 120 miles south of Chicago, 15 miles north of Champaign Urbana. Many bases were isolated due to the nature of what they did and were self sufficient, leaving many closed bases as dumps. I was at Chanute as a retrainee in 1985 and came back as an instructor in both White Hall (building shown here) and Grissom Hall (the present museum) teaching electronic principles, CAMS and Air Launched Cruise Systems from 85 to the 93 closure. What a shame to see it now, it was pristeen until 93.

Part of my weather training was in that building. What a shame to see it in that condition now.
