  • My first horse got tangled up in a piece of barbed wire that that was inadvertently left on ground after replacing it with safer fencing and one the men that ran the place found my horse calmly grazing. He was shocked at how calm my horse was.Hobble training save my horse from being seriously injured. Not always a place to tie up or one that's fenced.

  • This is terrible! If you love horses then why humiliate them in this way?

  • @EstherPrimrose

I don't know much about them, but it seems that one of their uses is to teach horses to be calm when their feet get caught or restricted by something (like barbed wire, which could cause injury if they panic).

  • @EstherPrimrose >>I was leading a trail ride one day and we were coming up a steep hill and someone had left a water hose slung over the fence, one of the horses got his hind feet tangled, and panicked and kicked his legs out and ran a bit, but being a trail horse and pretty calm, he stopped, but after seeing that i have always thought taking the time and teaching a horse not to panic when his legs get tangled can prevent a lot of trouble and possible injuries later on.

  • Thanx Rick, good video

  • so what happens if they fall with the hobbles? Do you take them off or what? I don't wanna get kicked... LOL

  • Great info, saved me a few mistakes.

  • what are hobbles usually used for? i've never heard of anyone using them as a training device for when the horse's feet are restricted. i've always thought they were a restrictive device on the horse. i've never really understood what they are for.

  • @Sarahblu : go to my web site and read my "hobble" page

  • awh.... you kissed his nose! sweet

  • what are hobbles used for?

  • Rick . . . you know what impresses me most in this video, is Tanner's powerful stance. I watched his back during this demo and throughout, his back is like a steel beam! Is this dicipline available to this degree in any breed? I've seen many a stance but he is just so impressive. If Tanner ever needs a good home . . . I'm the guy! Is he about 15.2 or so?

  • i've never seen anyone use hobbles except this one person who used chains...ick!

so from then on I was anti hobble, but after seeing your video i see how it can be benificial if they get stuck in a fence or anything else. very helpful video and i hope other people learn from it too.

  • Great video. I can tell you love your mustang! This training can be a lifesaver for horse and rider. Thanks

  • just popped in an love the ignorant comments. a true horseperson never closes his mind to learning. whether it be labeled Eng or Western is rediculous. if someone elses systems arent for you, then please, dont leave a comment. just move on to the next video.

  • Mustangs get branded by the neck.

  • @TheDrTim you say you been dealing with horses for 25 years and in another breath you mention Parelli? I dont think you have learned too much in your 25 years of being around horses LOL and you want to talk about Parelli and abuse check this vid by his WIFE Linda

    ebaumsworld.c o m/video/watch/80925308/

as far as " This is my personal opinion" your credibility is out the window so i don't really think anyone cares what you have to say!!! have a good day.

  • How many hands tall is tanner ?

  • I personal won't hoble my horses as my land is way to step. But i think if its done probley the way rick has shown then its great way to get your horses used to all storts.

I'm going to pratice this with my two, you never know oneday they might get traped or tangled up ( it can happen ) and its good pratice to keep them calm and relaxed

  • @TheDrTim :You don't understand horses or hobbles, hobs are better than a bit/tie down/nails in a hoof.A bit causes pain.Horses are flight animals No shit If you read my site you might understand this.Anyone/Monty/Pat knows hobs is a great way to let your horse roam, eat & relax. The stat 9/10 only shows the 9 idiots that hurt a horse did it wrong.Horses are hurt everyday, some blame the bit,the horse, the saddle, the fence &YOU blame the hobs, don't preach ignorance using good horseman to impress

  • thats a very nice mustang

  • I want that horse!

  • Hes right........spurs are a lack of horsemanship so are bits They are a cheat and people think by inflicting pain on a horse that the horse will listen better...WRONG Ive learned a great deal about horses and I can say horses should not have spurs being poked in their sided or metal bits being pulled back in their mouth....Its cruel

  • @buffguy0 for the most part I agree with what your saying. using a bit is not painfull if it's not reefed on. and I have seen horses that prefer them over a hack or bozel. I have a set of spurs bought them about 2 weeks ago. they were on sale for $3. brand new. not sure what I am going to do with them. sure wouldn't use them riding.

  • lol, wow, you could never be accused of being close minded. OK, I watched your video. I disagree, you had lead ropes hanging around, you were standing on a lead rope, you had spurs on, you had two horses that could feed off each other and get tangled up. In my opinion you put yours horses in danger and could have had a wreck pretty easy and the horse would have learned a bad lesson. Lots of ways to get results. I will agree that we disagree. Train your way and I will train my way. :)

  • yes, she is. :)

  • Some say hobbles that are higher up are stronger or prevent as much movement. Personal preference.

  • you're right!! it's horse abuse, and people don't need to do that! a horse should follow you because it want to!and not because a hobble is drewing on his leg!

train according to monty roberts or parelli!!!

  • You are too closed minded to see the benefit. This is not mean and my horses love to graze when hobbled rather then being tied to a tree. This has saved many horses more than once when they get caught in a fence and wait for me to come get them rather than freaking out and cutting themselves up.

  • @Fraentzi Yeah The parrelis! Look up linda parrelli beats a horse, Yeah hitting a horse with one eye is real smart!

  • you train your horse well. I never until today knew that hobles exsisted but they sem ok. Could it snap or is it totally snap proof?

  • Horses can break anything, but once they learn to be comfortable with them, they don't try to much. I assume if a lion jumped on them while hobbled they would break free. Depends on the hobble. Some idiots use chains, those won't break but will break a horse's leg or cut it off, so that is just stupid in my opinion. Chains and horses do not belong together, Period!

  • @horseawareness Oh right! yes chains are wrong but I dnt really know muhc about the western style training things lyk hobbles! Im an English rider so im used to useing a head collar and leadrope to tye up!!

  • Hobbling is great if you a trail rider who likes to camp. better than tying them up and if you get them used to a bell/ cow bell around their neck you know where they are.

  • I hope people don't try to hobble break a horse that is tied up (especially tied that long) &I sure don't recommend standing in front of them to hold their head up as a first time hobbled horse will try to crawl on to p of you like a drowning man. Use a safe pen, put um on & get out. They will jump around about a minute & it's over.

  • Valid point, but I disagree with letting them jump around, that is what I consider 'old' sacking out and creates fear and does not remove it or try and help the horse learn to deal with his fear.

  • wow, clever way.

  • i commented on this before but i don't see it so sorry if i post it twice! what is the purpose of hobble training? should i use it on the young horse i'm training? i've been picking up his feet and he's not liking it at all the longest he's let my hold his foot up is about 5 seconds! do you have any tips on that or should i just keep lifting? thank you so much for your videos they've been very helpful with my training :]

  • Your mindset is one problem. You say the longest he lets you hold his foot is 5 seconds. Who is training who? Hold that foot until he stops pulling it back and then YOU put it down the second he stops resisting. Then you are teaching him you will put it down if he relaxes.

  • what is the perpose of this thing and why?

  • What kind of rope would you use on a horse that isn't hobble trained?

  • Soft cotton, make comfortable so the horse knows it will not hurt him, you can use any soft rope, at first thicker is better so it does not cut into him if he gets scared, then the more you do then move to stiffer rope then any rope.

  • these videos are great so informative and easy to understand

  • Really nice techniques and philosophy!

And, what breed is that stunning horse?

  • He is a Mustang who was caught in Nevada.

  • @Golvklut I did not look back to see if you got a reply somewhere lol, But that would be a Mustang (horse caught out of the wild by the BLM)
