@MrMadeye1 F attachment. Changes the pitch of the horn from the key of Bb to F. Alternating hands comes from two backgrounds: some musicians are left handed. the other is that if a musician injured one hand, then he was either out of work or had to figure it out on the other hand. Nowadays, it's done mostly because it can be done.
Forget the harmonic stuff at the beginning - just listen the what follows - absolutely incredible talent. ...and now I'm off to put my trombones on eBay!
This man has actually made a big band album and played all trumpet trombone piano and sax parts himself enlisting the help of just a bassist and drummer. It's pretty sweet.
truly an entertainer. must be very difficult to constantly changing embouchure for both instruments. makes trombone look very easy with just the trigger
You sing and play at the same time. Hum isn't really the way I would put it, as your lips aren't closed when you're playing, they're vibrating. To get three notes at once, you have take advantage of resultant tones - for example, If I play a Bb and sing the G above it, a high Eb will result that completes the Eb major chord. I've found that sixths like the above example make the strongest resulting tones, but fifths can result in the major third appearing in between as well.
Nothing I love more than when he plays more than one instrument at once! Amazing you can get so many notes out of a trombone without moving the slide
I've chosen this to transcribe and transpose for my Jazz homework...and it makes me warm and fuzzy inside ^^ I can't wait for my Director to see how crazy I am...
@KrummyBear ("Multiphonics is a gimmick..." "He doesn't improv. And when he does it's Bb blues,,,"): JM is limited to Jazz? He doesn't improv.!!?? Not to mention that he's the fuckin' greatest trumpet player ever, have you ever seen this guy playing the piano? Do you know what i takes to play like that (especially improv. on the piano and the trumpet at the same time, switching keys just for fun ect...)? Sry man, I wish you could see him live and watch the faces in the audience!
He is not human! I saw him 3 times live in concert and i gotta say - James is no "genius" - he is WAY BEYOND genius! The word "genius" just isn't good enough. After the first concert he got standing ovations for like 15min!... Those who ever heard him play a 20min piano improv. know what I'm talkin' about. Sure, in the end it will always be a matter of taste but anyone who has seen him live will agree that James Morrison is truly one of the greatest musicians of all time!
You guys can go on hee-ing and haw-in' about who is better, etc....but let me tell you one thing, there is NOBODY in the world that can play tpt and tbn like this! NOBODY, he is fukin' amazing, period!!!!
Marsalis, Hargrove, Nakariakov, Sandoval, Brecker, Shew, Vega....... And those are just some of the ones that are alive.... He's no where near the top trumpet player... Not only is he limited to jazz... More specifically he's limited to Bb blues.. Which frankly I can do in a lower range obviously... But range is only so much and if that's what your looking for Maynard is much better.. Jus sayin' ya know!?
Hmmm, So Marsalis and Brecker can move from Trumpet to Trombone as seemslesly as he does? (Maybe with exception of Maynard) I have seen both live a few times, and have never seen them do this. Also I have seen James move from Trumpet to Piano, to Saxophone, to Ephonium etc etc, He's limited to Jazz hey, I've seen James Playing Piccolo Trumpet with with many of the top Orchestra's in the world, Playing baroque, classical, Romantic etc etc. Limited to Bb Blues, Geese What are u ON? Sorry...
I'm just sayin'... Multiphonics is a gimmick and as far as technical ability, all the fore mentioned artists are better. He's fine in his own right. But he's an entertainer.
Stop putting down one of the greatest musicians that will ever live!"Entertaining" Go and do some research and transcibe some of James' tracks and solos, and you will see who's "Entertaining"
"Multiphonics is a gimmick" NO it isn't, it's very difficult to do as well as he does it.He actually constructs a full 12 bar theme, resolves it etc.
BTW Are you a musician?
If you are you should be ashamed of yourself...sorry..but I am speaking from the heart here.
Haha yes actually. I'm a trumpet player. I've heard Wynton live and he's light years beyond this honestly. He changes style so seamlessly. He can rip a be-bop scale like I've never heard. Not to mention play those notes with a mute in. However you can find 3 videos of James playing the exact same thing note for note. He doesn't improv. And when he does it's Bb blues. I've tried to prove myself wrong here and have failed miserably.
I have nothing against Wynton, love him Arturo and Maynard (RIP), and another other decent Musicians out there....
Be-Bop Scale hey, hmmm,I like to play Hard bop scales myself (Just jokin')...
Can I just leave you with this (Trying to educate you a little)
See if you can go and buy or listen to some tracks of James's first album circa 1983 Album is "A night in Tunisia", and see what you think (yes this album was produced 26 years ago)
yoru full of shit.. are you watching the same video.. he plays the same melody over the same song sometimes, but solo.. never... its all improv.. ive played with the bloke... its not bullshit mate.. link me 2 videos where hes doing 2 note for note same solos in different performances or recordings.

Lul first word typo. Funny part that is even if you re arranged it correctly it would still be wrong but ok. Haha obviously not talking to a smart person. But besides the point he has many identical videos. And by the way improv. is the spontaneous creation of a melody based on the changes. However he plays the same one everytime. If not note for note the ideas climax and notes used are the same.
again this is bullshit. HE PLAYS different every fucking solo. So do all the greats. he does not use note for not climax's , and ddont fucking tell me what improv is rofll ur a dick.....
wow... you know nothing and you have just proven it to this whole channel.. Pal ive seen wynton, james, arturo, all live. Ive played with james before (younger at school), played with arturo and bobby shew also (Monterey Jazz Festival 1997).
Best players i ever played with. James is bebops best friend. BTW, Bobby Shew is an asshole, only person ive seen tell a drummer not to swing in the last 2 bars of melody of Tunisia, also only person ive seen tell audience to shut up, when they clap.
Yes, and my word for word Roy Hargrove definition of improv. displays a lack of intelligence. Guess who you just called stupid?? Lul. I played in all jazz ensemble under the direction. I agree, he is kind of an asshole. However he has personality. You know who else is an asshole? Buddy Rich. One of the most loved musicians of all time. Sesame Street anyone?
this guy plays every mode, chord, jazz or not, he does blues for fun. Put up any chart with complex chords he will nail it. Ive seen him smash some really hard charts. in ALL keys. If you dont like him dont watch his videos.
Dizzy Gillespie himself commends James Morrison, Dizzy gillespie and Charlie parker invented Bebop, the most difficult jazz out there. And if Dizzy commends James.. then James is amazingly good.

James in a small band setting is the best I have seen him at, either live or on CD.
Piano, drums, guitar, vocalist, bass, and James on everything else.
This seems to bring out the best in him.
1994 - Live In Paris - James Morrison and The Hot Horns Happening
I remember getting this CD in '94 when it came out, the first Track Tokyo Expesss, blew me away.
Quartet - 1998, is also good if you like a vocalist in the group.
Looking forward to the Upcoming album with 'The Idea of North'..
