One of my favorite movie sequences ever. It's not shown here, but I love the moment where Talos first becomes animate and turns to looks at Hercules and the other argonaut.
This sequence with Talos has been in my head for as long as I can remember -- he's the absolute epitome of cool, from the moment he first leans his head around -- inhuman and yet totally alive; I would say a clear inspiration for Alan Moore when he wrote Dr Manhattan. I want to be Talos, and terrorize my ex-girlfriend.
I remember going to see Jason and the Argonauts at the Saturday morning picture show of my local cinema years ago.The movie was fantastic on the big screen, it was never the same watching it on TV.The sequence featuring Talos coming to life combined with Bernard Herrmann's brilliant score was spellbinding.
I agree, MelonHeadFilmz, this is realistic and scary.. something that todays CG animation could never copy. Avatar may be cool and sofisticated when it comes to technology, but it lacks the raw movements of these figures, which to me feels more real, more intimidating.
I gathered the old drumsticks and bones from a nights' kentucky bucket and called for the Children of the Hydra in front of my ExBoss to slaughter him and everyone in the Office. Didn't work :(
Una de las mejores escenas fílmicas de todos los tiempos. El videojuego God Of War 2 hace un homenaje a Ray Harruhausen en la escena de los esqueletos. Kudos!!
I never did take to Jason as much as everyone else. After the amazing Talos sequence, anything there after seems really underwhelming, despite the animation in the film becoming increasingly complex as it goes on...
To be honest I wasn't as much a fan of Talos as I was of some of the other creatures Harryhausen as a kid made mainly due to the fact he just moved a bit too slow that running away shoudln't be that difficult, but looking at him now he's amazing. Not quite as amazing as the skeletons, Hydra, harpies, Kraken, and Medusa, but still amazing.
At 36 seconds, Talos looks sexy standing there, legs apart, arms to the side. It's like a man built like that shouldn't have any weakness, but he did....dam it! He was drained of his masculinity.
This movie was part of my chidhood, I really enjoy this film, also Clash of the Titans, and Sinbad, the effects should be amazing by that times!! but I still get surprise, because this work y handmade.
@Spartacus217 If i am not mistaken, i think they already have: don't they bomb the so called "Taliban" with Talos missiles? Correct me as i am not certain.
As a kid I watched all the aliens movie and this movie gave me more nightmares lol I used to have dreams that Talos came to my school one day and tried to hunt me down =(
Talos is probably the most realistic of all movie monsters i've seen. Stop motion fits him beyond triumph. If something made of broze could move, it would move exactly like that. Harryhausen did something that modern day artists would fail if they tried.
Yeah & that metallic creaking he made when he moved-incredible...oh and let's NOT forget Bernard Hermann's amazing brass & percussion score that accompanied the whole sequence-a perfect fit.
Totally agree, Talos looks solid and real CGI would not look half as good. Modern SFX should try harder to combine techniques rather than replace everything with CGI.
this scene freaked us out, just the whole idea of a giant figure trying to kill you is horrible enough. But that fucking coldless stare sends chills down your spine.
I was perhaps 8 years old when I first saw this movie. From the time I saw it, this scene would occasionally come back to me as a very frightening nightmare. I would see Talos come to life, I would run, and then I would wake up just before I was about to be trodden to death. Even though it scared me very much at the time, I still love this film. I remember being so impressed with the clashing rocks scene, the harpies, and the skeletons. Brilliant!
Amazing bit of animation. I love the way Harryhausen gave the figure a sense of enormous weight, particularly noticeable when he does that small sidestep over the promontory. His giant foot comes down with a sense of mass truly proportional to a huge bronze statue. You can almost feel the ground shake. A true master at work!
