Know your history rerun was a member of The Original Lockers with shaba doo (ozone), Don Campbell,Jeffrey Daniel, shalamar , shaba doo, them dude use to tear up soul train in the late 70's
When I was young and watched the show, I would always hope that it was an episode where Rerun would dance. I had no idea it was called "locking" back then.
RERUN needed a donation of cash from the people so he could enter a dance contest, so thats why ROG was screaming "SELL IT", now do you understand??? ASSHOOOOOOOLE
I love this show! Started watching this in 7th or 6th grade! My mom grew up with this show but was never really into it but I love this show and think this is one of the funniest T.V. shows ever made!
I'm reading these comments and like what? Backstreet Girls and Timberqueer didn't invent shit!! Fred "re-run" Berry brought locking to TV on What's Happening and NO its not breakdancing, notice how he doesn't get on the floor! Respect to Re-run and the original was Boogaloo Sam!
You must be blind as well as stupid, fella! Lesson1:This is locking from one of the art form's true pioneers,& not breakdancing which bears no resemblence & came along alot later. Lesson 2:Timberfake & his wannabe buddies could only dream of dancing like this!Always best to know at least a little about what you choose to pass comment on,lest you make(as indeed you've ably managed to do)a total buffoon of yourself.
Don't you and your buddy Turbo get your panties in a bunch, I'll tell you what, next time I'm down at Venice Beach, I'll buy both of you a nice pair of sequened parachute pants.
I have nothing against Model-T's and I know that they were first, I just don't want to drive one!
So, locking pre-dates bboying, BUT it does not pre-date ROCKING, one of the bases of bboying. Rocking came from the soul era (on the East Coast), and locking came from the funk era (on the West Coast), which happened pretty concurrently. But we DO know that popping came after both locking and bboying (even though most people outside of NYC didn't know what bboying was until "Flashdance" came out, and the media named it breakdancing, and it became a fad in the public's eyes).
You're right about that, Matrrixx. I grew up in the heart of the Mission district in S.F. the bay area from from the start of the 70s and no kid, no teen, no older teen was doing anything that was happening in those times in NYC. UNKNOWN.
Popping is a combination of two dance styles: locking, and the robot. It was said to have been created by Boogaloo Sam in 1975. Popping has been used as an umbrella term for styles like animation, popping, hitting, ticking, strobing, gliding, waving, floating, robotting, tutting, vibrating, and boogaloo. These are all different styles with different feels.
Popping and locking are separate styles of dance. Locking was created by Don "Campbellock" Campbell in the late 60's by accident while trying to do the funky chicken at a party (according to legend). It's a West-Coast dance style that flourished in the funk era.

Get it straight moron, if Berry hadn't been around there wouldn't even be any backstreet boys. Pay your respects to who showed us the way, dumbass.
