So, locking pre-dates bboying, BUT it does not pre-date ROCKING, one of the bases of bboying. Rocking came from the soul era (on the East Coast), and locking came from the funk era (on the West Coast), which happened pretty concurrently. But we DO know that popping came after both locking and bboying (even though most people outside of NYC didn't know what bboying was until "Flashdance" came out, and the media named it breakdancing, and it became a fad in the public's eyes).

Popping is a combination of two dance styles: locking, and the robot. It was said to have been created by Boogaloo Sam in 1975. Popping has been used as an umbrella term for styles like animation, popping, hitting, ticking, strobing, gliding, waving, floating, robotting, tutting, vibrating, and boogaloo. These are all different styles with different feels.
