I have used many makes and models of these firesteels. All of them will work really dry tinder and using proper tinder to get a fire started seems to be key. Good vid hope some people will learn from it. I have recently placed a order for a 4 inch 3/8 rod that will prob last several years with proper use. Awsome products keep up the good work.
I'll never send any of mine back, Ron! Your steels are the best around. I can't count the number of fires I've started with them. I have at least a dozen and counting. May I say your new "Palm Scraper" is blowing me away. I bought two and now I need MOOOAR! :-)
Sorry about the flag pressed wrong button but anyways will the firesteels you have in stock throw off the same sparks as in the vid becuz i bought a going gear and expected molten globs like yours and found out it was a new type they were selling the videos were misleading from goingear and i was hoping urs werent the same
A lot of less experienced people expect that these things will light a book on fire with a single strike... that's just unrealistic. My friend tried mine and said it didn't work because he couldn't light a ripped out page from a book on fire by shooting sparks onto the flat surface of it. Once I explained the concept of tinder, we cut up the paper into thin strips using a knife and made them into a little soft pile, and it lit pretty easily. It's all about technique and experience.
See if it works so easily WITHOUT the cotton soaked with vasoline. It gives a false sense of security to some people when you are seen using such easily lit tinder. Anyone can light cotton with a fire steel. If you can't you are a complete idiot...
I use fire steels as well, but it isn't so easy as you make it out to be when using natural tinder. Maybe that was the problem with whoever returned it to you.
@TheCybergopher Right.... Shouldda tried starting a fire with pinecones instead. If I go out into the woods, I'm going to go with petro cotton balls, Maya dust, or similar to ease my firestarting. This process *should* be easy, not a fight when you may be freezing cold and wet.
@maxmillianof98 lighters are for pansies, unless your starting a stove/grill-or campfire. fire stees and a magnesium match are possibly the best stuff
@maximillianof98 Your matches run out or become damp and do not work, lighters run out of fuel or break. Survival experts the world over recommend firesteels as the sure means to start fires and nearly always include them in their own survival kits.
@maximillianof98 Obviously if you need 1 fire, you'll use a lighter. The purpose of a flint is that it has thousands and thousands of uses before it runs out, and in a real survival situation, your lighter is gonna run out years before your flint does.
@macgarthur in a real survival situation, you could had miss that helicopter or died if you can't make that much needed fire on time. what's the good of "thousands of fire"? (by the way, they marketed thousands of "strikes" not "fire".
yet, for bushcraft (long term "survival" as a way of life) a firesteel will be a good companion.
That's a good point very few remembers... You HAVE to use your gear ALL the time.. testing new sort of tinders and so on(with the firesteel) Be one with your gear and you'l do much better in the woods bushcrafting/surviveing!
(5 x 1/2). I tried it outside during a shower, it was not torrential, but raining steadily. I compared it to the Blast Match, which I actually like and use for certain things. But the fire steel blew it away. The amount of sparks the thing throws off is insane. This thing works well in all conditions. I won't go into the woods again without one. I also carry cotton balls soaked in Vaseline.
I'd be more worried about how to put the fire out with this monster.
I am very curious about what your tinder selection, and how you process it for use.

@TheCybergopher his video proved that the product worked properly and that people need to be prepared for their skill level to go into the wild.

@TheCybergopher Ya thats why keeping some proper tinder in a water tight case with the fire steel is a must.

That's strange... I just got my first one of these--my first firesteel ever--and I had a fire going in 10-15 sec... It seemed very intuitive to me.

Say you make fires pretty frequently..how long would one of the bigger fire steels last?
xmr11rmx 1 year ago
@xmr11rmx Thousands of fires - I've never worn one out :-)

@2ndAsstJizzMopper Chill out... He kept her anonymous, and made a great point. Awesome gear means absolute shit if you don't know how to use it.
