They never wanted him to go over Edge, because Edge was already on his way to the world title with MITB. They wanted him to be buried and lost on Smackdown. (As twisted as that sounds) WWE pushes who they want when they want, look at guys like Sheamus or Swagger. If they want you to get the title, they will book you that way. They didn't want Matt to get it.
I have to say, congratulations to Matt for being professional about the whole thing, because although this was ramped up for a storyline, Lita did actually leave Matt for Edge behind the scenes, so he had to be feeling shit.

I remember this match when I was 9 years old. I was about to watch Unforgiven 2005 when my mother came and shouted at me to sleep as there is school tomorrow morning. I spend the whole night crying about not able to watch this match. Epic moment.

This feud ended far too early. It was above the main events at that stage in my opinion. It felt so real because it was taken from a real life situation. They could have really ran with this. Matt Hardy was really over at this stage and when WWE moved him to Smackdown he should have been pushed to the world title. However they ended up giving the belt to Angle, then next time round they gave it to Khali when they had the chance. WWE dropped the ball on that one.

i agree...same thing with the rivarly between matt and jeff hardy...when he got drafted to raw he did the you cant see me sign to john cena..i thought that woulda been a great match for the WWE title...but instead he was pushed back down the next night fighting kofi kingston..-.-
