L4D1=Grim zombie flicks, like 28 Days Later

L4D2=B movie flicks, like the remake of Dawn of the Dead

Neither are better than the other, though I personally prefer l4d2 due to it's intentional cheesy, B movie atmoshere.

I own both of the L4D games, and personally there isn't much to say on which is better or "popular." L4D 1 had a grimmer atmosphere, the characters, the infected, the finales+the music made each of the campaigns felt so nostalgic and apocalyptic. L4D2 takes place in the south which obviously made it more "brighter"-the added melee, guns, throwables and special infected made the gameplay overall more addictive. I do play the first one more, yet still to say that I had fun playing both.

I was shaking throughout the whole finale. i was still shaking like 20 minutes after the fact.

Comparing the two would be like comparing "28 Days Later" to "Zombieland". They're both fun, and had tons of thought poured into them, and awesome atmosphere - I only tend to like L4D2 more because the character-interaction is more fun, and because... Well, I'm a pansy-ass, and I can't really play L4D1 without jumping out of my skin every-other second. Plus, MELEE WEAPONS.

But L4D1 is made more of hardcore gamers\zombie fans while L4D2 is more for the casuals. Nothin wrong with that!

I love the differences between L4D1 and L4D2. I love them both CRAZY hard, but if I had to chose, I think I'd go with L4D2. The first is more of a traditional horror shoot-em-up game that's really eery and creepy, and suspenseful as hell, while the second plays more like a "summer thrill ride", only with zombies thrown into the mix. In fact, L4D2 almost tends to tilt on the side of straight-up satire with its not-so-subtle nods towards zombie-flick cliches.

If Valve ever makes a L4D3 (and if they do I hope it's many MANY years from now) I hope they bring the game back to the darker atmosphere of the original. Even though they never intended for L4D to be a real survival horror game, it was still very eerie due to the atmosphere. L4D2 was good, but they got rid of all the creepy stuff and added very unlikable characters. It will always be second in my book.

Personally, I think the differences between the game are due to their location. L4D1 takes place in the north, which is closer to the point of initial infection. The game IS darker, it takes place at night, and most people other than the four survivors are either dead or zombies. L4D2 takes place further south, closer to aid, and so the survivors do have a lot more hope of surviving.

L4D1 is a walk to an uncertain future. L4D2 is more like a race to safety. The music + characters reflect this.

Valve usually prioritizes gameplay over story, anyway, so the answer would probably be "Because Valve thought the new infected would make the gameplay more fun."

I honestly don't see why people are all pissy that L4D2 doesn't feel the same as L4D1. As many people who aren't idiots know, the premise of both games is that they are movies. Movies, even in the same franchise, change genres. The biggest example is the Evil Dead movies. They started as slasher films but the third was a comedy. They're both excellent games and if you hate on one just because it feels different from its predecessor, you're an idiot.

L4D2 had Whitaker, 3/4 of the original survivors, Chopper Pilot #2, Virgil whats up brother and two military guys. Seems quite even too me.
