  • Thank you for summarizing the story. I have been away from Japan for 23 years and really didn't know about this movie until someone from the Japanese community over here (in the US), told me "Did you know that your brother was in a movie??". My brother appeared a little bit as the conductor of the orchestra. This is Yamagata Symphony Orchestra, and the fact, I heard, is that this orchestra is thriving after my brother became their conductor, way far from folding!

  • You're brilliant. x

  • This movie looks pretty cool Leigh, thanks for telling me about it! (also, that sucks about those potato skins!!!)

  • @UnityPhreak Watch it, Adam. Tonight. Now!

Yeah, I asked the girl if there were skins in it, and she said she didn't know (they never seem to know what their place of employ carries). Then she said she didn't see any in it. I didn't see any in it either; they totally blended in everything mixed with some herbs. Totally hidden. My fate was cast before the meal was half way finished. :-/ Actually, about 5 minutes after the first bite...

  • Nice one! Thanks.

  • Hm, coincidentally I am only watching this now to kill 5 minutes while I wait for my sweet potato to finish cooking. Potatoes FTW!

  • @culwin It will be the best 5 minutes of your week. People actually eat sweet potato skins? interesting.

  • @schatze78 I never heard of anyone peeling sweet potatoes before baking them... but yeah you can get sweet potato potato chips too. They're good and healthier for you than normal potato chips.

  • Departures was such a good movie. So very powerful. They don't make these here anymore.

  • @WhirledSol Every now and then they do, but it's become rare. It really is amazing.

  • i wanted to see this one when it was in my local FA theatree

ps. potatoes in their skin are yummi :P

  • @Raphaelus13 If you have netflix, it's currently available on instant watch; you should definitely check it out.

Yes, they are...little tasty packs of doom and deformity for me.

  • Great review Leigh. I'm sure it's tough talking about such a personal experience, but thank you. I could tell that this film really meant a lot to you. I will definitely check it out.

  • @CoffeeDoug It was impossible for me in the beginning, but it's been many years. Sometimes it seems like it just happened, and other times it feels like a lifetime ago. Boopy remembers too. When Andy died Boopy waited next to the front door for months for him to come back.

I think this film would have a profound impact on most. In my personal and professional life death is very common for me, so I was able to view it from both sides--mourner and occupational. It's a very unique feeling.

  • @TheRoughCuts Well, by relating to such a personal experience during the review, you really gave great insight into what the film is about. I can't wait to see it.

  • are you allgeric to potato skins?

  • @Spsuperstar Yes, unfortunately. :'(

  • oh loved departures. i first saw it on a plane comming back from london. i like how the movie showed a sense of family like youd see in a takashi miike film. i cant believe its by the director of the onmyoi movies. those were crap.

if you like this movie, youd probably like the koreeda film "After LIfe". its out of print but there are used copies on amazon

  • @andyviana162 Overseas flights often have really great foreign films. They really helped to expose me to a lot of great directors. I liked his comedies, haha. *^_^*

Hirokazu Koreida is a brilliant director, and I don't throw around that word either. Everything I've seen from him has been outstanding.

  • @TheRoughCuts ive only seen three of his films. after life, nobody knows, and still walking. i loved after life and still walking. nobody knows is not the kind of movie id watch over and over. too depressing even tho it was based on a true story.

you liked whos comedies? yojiro takita?

  • Awesome! This has been on my Netflix forever. I think I will actually pull the trigger now. *netflixblam*

  • @omnidoug I think you will love it. It's a very different type of film, but in a very good way. Watch it!

  • Great flick and nice review!

if youre into jappo cinema i recommend you check out Taste of Tea or Funky Forest

a classic like Tetsuo the Iron Man is a good one too

  • @martinblank83 Thanks. I don't think I've seen either of those first two, and it's been years since I saw TtIM--I was still in undergrad!

  • I really wanted to see this movie but have not had the chance so far. Great review. Love the personal touch. If the movie is half as moving as you personal story it must be amazing.

And indeed: hope to actually see you again next week. ;^)

  • @PuppyZwolle I normally would put pearl powder on it, but I'm not sure how it would effect my sugar gliders :-/ so it should clear up on its own in a couple more days.

You definitely should check it out; it really is an amazing film.
